Nintendo to cease Wii u production in 2018

R.I.P Wii U. I never played nor paid for you.

I CALLED THIS, I was saying Nintendo is secretly killing the Wii U to my sister not even a month ago, because if they port then there is no point. They have no games right now and the few games that might still sell wii Us would be smash, zelda u, splatoon, and mario kart, but those might get ported like zelda did. RIP RIP RIP

Same, I was thinking about it for smash since it had to be pretty cheap on ebay so something by now but now...no gg

Ikr!? This just shows that Nintendo has pretty much lost faith in their own console. And that's a shame too because I love my Wii U and the games on it despite having a mediocre game library.

The poor thing doesn't make money, it's not the system's fault when your debut for E3 was this atrocious...

Lol if you think that's bad you should see this commercial back when the Wii U first launched

Aaaaaaaaand this just solidified my new-found hatred for Nintendo.

In 2018, the Wii U would be 6 years old. Yes, that's a short lifespan, but even Nintendo can't deny that the Wii U was an absolute failure in terms of sales.

I was tempted to get a Wii U a few times over the years, but it never really quite hit that "must have" for me. Likewise, I'll wait to see the specs for the NX.

This makes me really happy! I thought they were gonna discontinue cease production later this year, 2017 at the latest!!! I'm glad that its lifespan will be 2 years longer than I thought.

Today's has been a good day for Nintendo.

At least to most of us who weren't in denial; we saw this coming.

Wow, half a dozen years and they kill it. That was fast.

Oh wow, so they're discontinuing the Wii U in 2018, huh?  It seems as though Nintendo's been struggling with their consoles lately, ya know?  Their handheld systems have been pretty successful, but it seems as though their home console endeavors haven't gone so well!  The Wii only lasted 6 years, and it seems the Wii U will also last only 6 years!  Nintendo's gonna have to put their money where their mouth is for the NX, cuz otherwise, they'll lose tons of customers! :O

But yeah, I didn't get the Wii U, I still have my old Wii, ya know? :3

I've enjoyed my Wii U, but Nintendo knows what's best. People can complain about it all they want, but a system with weak sales is not worth the time at all. They're wasting their money and resources. Zelda U will be like a swan song for the Wii U, before they end its life. But it has the NX port which will be higher in power and just a much better system overall. People need to quit hating on Nintendo for simple stuff like this and start understanding why Nintendo is starting to make changes. Iwata was a great man, loved by many, but he was holding Nintendo back for years. Sure the news has been minuscule and rare, but Nintendo is making the move to better changes and better ways thanks to the new CEO. We've still got a long way to go, but Nintendo will endure.

That's a shame. Is their a specific game(s) that would have made it a must have for you? I personally bought the system with Smash Bros in mind, but stayed for the other great games like Xenoblade X, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Mario Maker, and a whole host of others. Being able to play Earthbound too was a huge plus.

The system has it's problems, but the games it has to offer are absolutely brilliant and some of the best I've ever played imo. :)

They are just to innovative and people don't like change. All their previous home consoles sold well, so seeing a drastic change in a console is something people didn't like. Also, the game library heavily affected the console. It's just too casual.

Hmm, I see.  Well, Nintendo should take more risks when it comes to their consoles, so that they have longer life cycles in the market, ya know?  Just take Sony, for instance!  They make big changes, but they let their consoles last for a good 9 to 10 years before officially ceasing production of them, ya know?  But yeah, let's see what happens with the NX now.  But yeah, I think that with Mr. Iwata gone, things will be a bit wild for Nintendo at this point.  Just look at the whole Zelda scandal! But, let's see how Nintendo handles things going into the future, ya know?  Cuz I've been a Nintendo fan(Mostly through their handhelds, as the only Nintendo home console I've owned has been the Wii.) just as long as I've been a Sony fan, so I don't want Nintendo getting a bad rep, ya know? :)

Yeah, no one wants any company they love to get a bad rep. I too was mainly into Nintendo's handhelds. I honestly wonder how the NX will fare. The Wii U was a bit weird.

Yeah, but well, let's just hope Nintendo handles the backlash of the fans rage! :O  And well, in terms of the NX, it could either be Nintendo's Magnum Opus, or it could be a failed attempt at glory such as with the Wii U!  At many times I wanted to get the Wii U, but the lack of games for it really turned me off, ya know?  And since I have Smash 4 for my 3DS, I really see no reason to get the Wii U version, ya know?  There are some good games on the Wii U I would've loved to play, but having a console just to have two or three games is kinda pointless, ya know?  But yeah, Nintendo needs to up their game if they want their consoles to have fond memories in the hearts of gamers, such as when the Nintendo 64 or the first Nintendo system launched, ya know?
