I think it's safe to say that KH4 will be released quickly after KH3. If we assume that KH3 comes out in 2017 then we can hope to see the sequel in 2-3 years.

 

This gen will last until 2020 since Sony and MS are about to show the PS4 Neo and an upradeable Xbox One according to rumours. We could easily see KH4 by the end of this gen.

 

Most of the assets and models KH3 used will appear in KH4 again so it will be easier for the development team to produce a sequel. Look at FF13 for example. The development took four years and FF13-2 was released 2 years after the first game.

I guess that depends on how many spin-off games Square Enix wants to make, before KH4.

 

The production of KH3 officially began in 2013, so it also "only" took 4 years, when it really gets released in 2017.

 

But since KH4 will have a new story, I guess there won't be many this time (if any).

Yeah, I imagine the gap will be similar to the gap between KH1 and KH2. The Osaka team should have gotten more efficient at coding for PS4 once KH3 finishes so they wouldn't have the technical hurdles to overcome.

I suppose that would be cool.  Really I'm a little skeptical on what they're going to do with the series.  I want to continue playing past III if possible, but right now I'll just be thankful to even have it.  But we can't really do too much with the past once KHIII ends so we'll have to look towards the future.  I wouldn't be surprised if a brand new type of enemy starts to show up, but maybe it'll be like an enemy from the future or something.  I guess all the true speculation will have to start when we see the secret movie in KHIII (Because we all know one will be there lol!).

I think it's way too early to even predict what they will do with KH4. We barely know anything about KH3, so there is no way we can possibly predict what they will do with KH4. Besides, love me first and then move on to my younger sibling.

i would have preferred SE wait a longer time than just a couple years between KH3 and KH4. those are big releases for the franchise and some breathing room in between would be nice.

If they wanted to start off a new saga with a portable title, they could do that. Right now there's a 50/50 chance of them going either way, and we won't have a better idea one way or another unless Nomura or Square elaborate on it directly.

There's absolutely no way of knowing that for sure. What kind of game comes out next heavily depends on the interests of Square Enix and Nomura. If they wanted to start off a new saga with a portable title, they could do that. Right now there's a 50/50 chance of them going either way, and we won't have a better idea one way or another unless Nomura or Square elaborate on it directly.

 

Starting the new saga with a portable title? This will never happen because

 

- it goes against the idea to have all KH games on one platform

- handheld devices are not longer popular enough to develop an exclusive KH title on it, the future is called smartphones

- most of the people are not informed and will say that this is an unnecessary spin-off

 

There is a high chance that SE will continue moving the KH franchise on the current consoles as long as they are not replaced by a new gen.

I'm not saying you're not allowed to do it, I just don't see the point in it.

It's good speculation, but like I said, it depends on what they want to do. They might consider those points, but if they just randomly want to start with a spin-off title, then they'll do that. Anything is likely at this point, I honestly wouldn't be surprised one way or the other.

We don't need a portable KH ever again. They need to stick to PS and Xbox, that way everyone can follow along equally.

God, I'm gonna be in my late 20's before I ever get to see another Kingdom Hearts game after 3. And I'm not even 20 yet.

I doubt it'll be KH4. I think they will still continue to do the "side-games". But, since KH3 is gonna be multi-platform, I'm guessing all future games might be multi-platform as well.
