Also, I'm not sure what you mean by fresh water, but everyone knows you shouldn't drink tap water (if you do, boil it), and most people purchase giant water jugs and have a water cooler at home. It's just a thing. Well, I don't know about the metallic taste, but last time I was in one of the more air-polluted cities (Xi'an), when I blew my nose at the end of the day (TMI warning) my snot was black-ish. It was kinda gross. I also made a decision to clean my nose at the end of every day there.
