I suffer from depression of being too dependant and a burden on my family. Also I despise human beings. And finally because I live in a shitty world that is convincing me more and more why humanity shouldn't be around. The team was sent there for research, and to root out exactly who the traitors were. Xemnas wasn't entirely certain of who, and didn't want to risk losing members who were not part of the traitors. Vexen, Lexaeus and Zexion were there to continue on the Replica Project, according to them anyway. And perhaps Xemnas was also using this as a way of covering more ground and finding the Chamber of Repose more effectively and quicker. Plus a failsafe was made in case the traitors did almost succeed in controlling Sora: Axel.

Umm Xion was around before the heroes ever entered CO. Saix finding her was before COM.

It isn't really talked of often because, surprise surprise, science. But I agree it is a fascinating subject worth diving into more.
