Why did Xion turn on Roxas and attempt to merge with him (causing the final boss fight)?

 

From what I remember, earlier in the game, Xion went with Riku to Naminé and DiZ where they were going to destroy her and put her memories back into Sora. But that was interrupted when Axel showed up to bring her back to the Organisation. So she went out and fought him, then lost. Next thing you know she has tracked down Roxas and is attempting to merge with him.

 

Why didn't she just go back to Riku / Naminé / DiZ and be put back into Sora like she had originally planned? Did she change her mind or something?

Axel's mission was to bring her back to the Castle That Never Was so Xemnas could reprogram her. When Axel arrived with Xion, he collapsed from fatigue and Xemnas took Xion when Axel was unconscious. So he reprogrammed her to complete the initiative to merge with Roxas to gain the full power of the Keyblade and become the Organization's Keyblade wielder.

She wanted to help Riku by capturing Roxas. That's why she fought him.

Good question. Maybe it's because it was easier, or she would rather be destroyed by Roxas instead of DiZ. Given a choice, I would rather be killed by Roxas too.

There are two major factors:

 

1. Xemnas reprogrammed her to attack and kill Roxas.

2. Xion knew that with her still being alive, Sora would never be able to wake up, and Roxas would continue to lose his strength. She wanted to die, but she knew that Roxas would never hurt her on his own, so she attacked Roxas to force him to defeat her.

The main thing I've heard is that she was reprogrammed. There's also the chance she might have gone a tad bit insane. Personally, I think that she might have had to have Roxas destroy her to go back to him. She was very strong at that point, after all. The fact that she fought tooth and nail against her fate from the beginning, and said it was her choice to “go away now” when Roxas was asking if he'd killed her, seems to show this is right to me, but it's still mostly speculation.

Just because she's not a thing doesn't mean she can't be reprogrammed. Replicas are artificial beings after all.

I think it was for the last chance to see Roxas and to tell him what Xemnas's plan was. By attempting the merge she wanted Roxas to either win and go on to take out Xemnas and for her to still merge with Sora or for him to loose and then be forced to merge with Sora and for her to continue on to try and defeat Xemnas, or then merge with Sora herself so no matter what Sora was complete and could then stop Xemnas.

I knew I was right on that!

1.She wanted to go back to Sora but also wanted to give Roxas his full power back. I guess she had to be killed by Roxas to do that.

2.Xemnas "reprogrammed" her after Saix took her from an unconcious Axel. How he "reprogramed" her, I have no idea.

She is talking with Namine in the mansion in Twilight Town. Then, DiZ shows up and says that an Organization member has found them. Xion says she will stop him. Namine tells her not to. Xion goes outside to find Axel. She fights him and loses. A very weak Axel takes her back to the castle only to collapse. Xemnas is shown grabbing Xion. Unfortunately, since she is a puppet, Xemnas programs her to transform in order to fight Roxas.

She wanted Roxas to defeat her so she could go back to Sora and so that Xemnas wouldn't get his way. Yes, she was reprogrammed but by that point she had already developed her own psyche, her own heart, and a heart cannot be reprogrammed. So her body was reprogrammed to use the memory devices and she pretended​that her heart had been reprogrammed as well so Xemnas, in his arrogance, would believe that his plan had succeeded and allow her to face Roxas alone.

 

What I don't understand is, if she was supposed to defeat Roxas in battle so she could merge with him and become the "new Sora" wouldn't Roxas defeating her have the same effect? Maybe they where too evenly matched at the time? Perhaps one had to be significantly stronger in order to overpower the others personality? Maybe she was too close to Sora at the time and went back to him instead of being absorbed by Roxas? Or could it be that battle had noting to do with it and it was supposed to be a gradual process, like when Namine was fading because of her close proximity to Kairi? Only much, much slower. So many questions.
