Just wanted to bring this topic up because there's been a lot of controversy over Maleficent using the word "hell" in Brith By Sleep. She told Prince Phillip and Aquq to "see all the powers of hell". She was obviously talking about the place hell. Ya know, where the devil resides.
Maleficent IS the devil. Many cartoons use characters that are really the devil but have names that are no where even close to the devil and have no noticable similarities. Maleficent was obviously supposed to be a female version of the devil. Maleficent means evil and that was likely the closest name that Disney could find to "devil".
A lot of cartoons have hell in them, including Disney. At large, there is no hell in Kingdom Hearts but it is still in Final Fantasy and Disney. Maleficent was talking about the place hell obviously, but I guess it's understandable why people would think otherwise.
Many E10+ games use words like "hell" and "damn". Why is this such a big deal? How old are you? 10? It's not a big deal. The place known as hell exsists in many video games and cartoons. I doubt they could get away with using the word "hell" on a TV-Y7 show but they still use it in ways most children wouldn't notice right away. This includes the devil as well who is used more.
Right off the top of my head:
Hades from the Disney movie Hercules is basicly the devil. They call him the "Lord of the Dead" inthe movie and Kingdom Hearts because their supposed to be kids/family movies/games. His appearence is like a devil with his flaming hot red hair when he gets angry and the whole Underworld as his base of operations. In Greek mythology, Hades is not the devil, just the lord of the dead. In Disney, it's the complete opposite.
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty is also meant to be a devil like character. As I stated, Maleficent means "evil". The devil is evil. Maleficent is probably the closest they could come to a devil reference.
The Red Guy from Cow & Chicken is another example. He already admit he was the devil in the pilot epsiode of the show back in 1995. That wasn't long ago so I doubt the rules for TV-Y7 shows have changed that much. His appearence is also very reminiscint to the devil. I guess you can say Cow & Chicken is an exception though because it was always firetrucked up and was never a good show for kids, despite it's TV-Y7 rating.
Him from The Powerpuff Girls is probably my best example. He was probably the most clear example of the devil to date. For starters "Him" stands for "His Infernal Magesty", a.k.a. the devil so the creators of the show where smart when they made this character. His voice is that of like.. 5 different people so I don't think I even need to get started there. Obvious reference to Satan and hell. There's also many more but I think I've used enough for this particular character.
So why are people making such a big fuss over Maleficent using the world "hell" in Birth By Sleep. She's the devil, Nomura's not gonna turn one of Disney's best villains into some kiddish child friendly whore. Why can't she use the word "hell"? You're basicly telling the devil not to curse. Why would you take such a risk? lol.
