What Does The Future Hold For The Final Fantasy Series?

Posted

Hey everyone, how's it going?  I hope your all doing okay!  So anyways, I'm a fan of Final Fantasy, and I absolutely love all the games I've played thus far.(Which includes FF1,FF4, Crisis Core, XIII, XIII-2, Dissidia, and Dissidia 012.)  I've still yet to play all the other numbered games and spin-offs, which are many. X_X  But I've been wondering about what the future will hold for this series.  The SNES games were praised for their storytelling, and the style there was all swords and magic, and the later FF games were also praised but disapproved by fans.  And I don't see why, because in my opinion, Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 are epic games in their own right.  And I've seen the various tones each Final Fantasy game has, and with each new installment, the game world modernizes itself more.  In the case of Final Fantasy Versus XIII for example, the game world is basically a modern world, with a focus on a more mature and dark story.  I like the approach that Square is taking with Versus, as it offers a gritty story that all of us will enjoy.  But the question is, what will come after that?  What more will Final Fantasy offer?  I know Square will undoubtedly always come up with something, but right now the series is pretty quite, save for all the talk about the FFXIV game and discussions about Versus, but other than that, nothing.  I'm also wondering where the heck Final Fantasy Type-O is?  It was supposed to release here, and it released in Japan 2 years ago!  Anyways, what are your thoughts on this people?

Like everyone else stated, Final fantasy has a long way before it comes to an end. I can see SE making a new plot, new charcters, ect with each new game having a different and interesting plot.

Final Fantasy will survive through the second big bang. It will continue on and on and on until we get up to Final Fantasy XXX-3

Anyway, I've kind of given up on the Final Fantasy games. I enjoy the "ye olde world" settings of the older games, and now they're way too far into the science fiction realm. Plus, they reuse so many characters that it's just grating.

Which is why I'm really enjoying the Dragon Quest games now. They all keep that same "ye olde" world, but at the same time every character besides the silent protagonist is really three-dimensional and not just a recycle of an existing character archetype. They don't have SUPER AMAZING HD GRAPHICS, but when you love all of the characters, it shouldn't really matter how well rendered their hair is.

Yep, there won't be a TRUE FINAL FANTASY, in which it actually is the Final GAME IN THE SERIES. At least, not for awhile. I suppose when they finally make the last game, it'll have the Final in the name all in Capitals, to emphasize itll be the true last game.

Honestly Versus might turn out to be FFXV ive heard.

honestly i expect Final Fantasy to survive for so long that my grandchildren will play its 500th sequel and i'll tell them about ff7 and ff13 and they will think the graphics on ff13 suck

Thats actually happening with me right now. lol

Well there is a future.

It's called Final Hallway

All I hope is that Final Fantasy remembers what made it great in the first place.

FF vs XIII has been held up because of graphics, gameplay tinkering, etc. There seems to be a heavy focus on aesthetics, be it graphics, or character and weapon design. It's a superficial focus.

But here's the thing: when people are thinking about Final Fantasy, what are they thinking about?

Aerith getting run through.

Garnet standing in front of Zidane and letting him know that he's not alone.

The last few moments Tidus and Yuna spend together.

Terra and company telling Kefka that even he kills the world, there are powers within themselves which Kefka can never touch.

What really matters in Final Fantasy is the story, the characters, and most of all, the emotion. These games stuck around for so long because they managed to garner an emotional response from players, and that kind of thing is what separates an average story from a great one. Right now, it feels like Final Fantasy has almost forgotten that. I don't care what Versus looks like, because that's not what I'll remember. I will remember what I felt while playing.

If Final Fantasy can remember that, then the stories they tell will continue to last.

THIS

This is pretty much the magical story telling that Final Fantasy has lost over the years ever since X-2 came out

So true. The ends of IV, Crisis Core, and VIII made me cry.

I agree on FF4 and Crisis Core

But FF8.....ughhhhh

I've played the game and then I realized that I liked the Squall of KH for a completely different reason

The advantage Final Fantasy has is that, repeating elements and the occasional sequel/prequel notwithstanding, each title is its own game.  You don't need to play any of the others to understand one, though it might help you appreciate them a bit more.  As long as Squeenix continues doing what it's been doing thus far (hopefully in good ways), by thinking of compelling stories, characters, and settings, Final Fantasy's future should be fine.

This song suits that :]-

Yeah but Nomura said that because the story's too Dark, can it not be considered FFXV and also, i both hope for and want a another Final Fantasy that's like FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX and FFX in terms of the certain somethings that these four FFs had unlike the others both before and after them which i mean no offense to since i like them but not as much as the four mentioned above maybe obviously :].

I dunno,I admit I liked XIII and XIII-2 but LRFFXIII  is just......how can I describe it.

I meant Laguna and his relationship. For that one I felt so bad I nearly teared up, but the other two brought out physical tears.
