Nintendo to End the DS's Production?

Posted

The Nintendo DS production could be on hold for good. According to Nintendo’s financial results for the current fiscal year its sales forecast for DS software titles is a bold 10 million, but hardware sales have drawn a blank – quite literally.

The DS has had a fantastic production run, with sales of over 153 million units and software sales of over 933 million, after its launch in Japan and North America in 2004. In fact, it’s seen some of the best shift in software sales, with New Super Mario Bros. at 30 million and Mario Kart DS following at 23.3 million units. And the DS has ended on a last high with sales of Pokemon White and Black 2 reaching 7.81 million. As it stands, Nintendo has yet to provide official confirmation of its DS hardware production.

True. :P

I feel a little guilty never actually owning a DS. I've only really borrowed one. But it did make buying a 3DS that much easier as it's backwards compatible. The DS is a fine console with some great games. I'm sorry to see it go.

This doesn't surprise me considering the 3DS has be out for 2 years now.

No, Nintendo

No

I wouldn't be surprised if they ended the DS production line, as all of the major titles are coming out for the 3DS, leaving hardly any reason left to purchase the DS or DSi series (save for older games and the reduced price).

I'm not surprised. I remember I was like 9 or 10 when I got my first DS; I'm 17 now. Also have a DSLite. But I have my 3DS and don't use those other two anymore.

Twas a wonderful gen of consoles though. <3

I expect this.  By this point people would have bought it, kept it, traded it in, sold it on etc.  There's no need to make more.

I mean sony just stopped PS2 production last year and the PS3 was hitting 6 years! haha but yeah DS is done.

Wait this means that even the games for the DS will be no longer on sale?

All good things must come to an end.

Update:

Earlier today, Nintendo’s financial results from last fiscal year led us to believe that the Nintendo DS hardware would no longer be sold for the current year. However, Nintendo UK have stated that they will be continuing to sell DS hardware – although this is not indicative as to whether the console will be coming to a halt later this year.

I still have my original bulky silver DS (although it's busted lool). Tis' sad news
