What are your opinions on parents naming their kids after places?

Posted

Whether it's been online or in person, or even from a work of fiction, I know about people who have been named after places. I remember once meeting a girl whose name was China. If you separate the word from the actual place then wow, it actually does sound like a pretty name.

*personal info time wow* my name is Savanah. It's an ugly name but it's similar I guess, to "savanna" which means "grassland" ("swamp" or something in French, idk fūck you France), and while that's not a specific place there are specific savannas.

Most if not all names have a meaning or multiple meanings, that can date from Anglo-Saxon to religious, Roman etc., and change over time.

I'm asking this because if I had a son, I know this sounds odd, but I'd consider naming him Arizona ( and no, it's not because I love Arizona to death, I just like the way it sounds). I don't live in Arizona so I can't say how I feel about that, but if I knew someone named "Massachusetts", I'd just react like, "Oh. Huh."

But I was wondering if what you guys think. Even if you'd never consider giving your kid a name that's the same as a place, what do you think of it? Weird? Normal? Doesn't bother you? Just curiousss

Also what made me wanna ask this, is because isn't there a book or something about a girl named Alaska?

Most of the time I don't like it, but I do think Savannah is a pretty name. Arizona doesn't sound bad either.

I actually have known a few boys named Dallas.

It's still better than naming your child North.

I'd like to of been named Canada and see what would've transpired from it. Otherwise I don't like it, because I'm named after a place and it's so weird.

Eh, I think it depends on the name itself. Sometimes they're okay, sometimes not so much.

Also, is the book you're talking about Looking for Alaska?

Well one parents names their child "Talulah-Does-the-Hula-in-Hawaii"...That I do not like. At all. Neither did the judge who went against the law of being over 18 to change your name and allowed the girl to do it as soon as she felt she should.

Yeah I think it really depends on the name. If chosen correctly it's usually a really beautiful name, and very unique. But something like Iowa would never work haha xD

Same goes for when parents name their kids after objects. I like the name Rock for a guy, but the name Stone is questionable.

Pretty name by the way!

Well, seeing as many places are named after people, I think it's only fair that people can be named after the places that are named after people.

Which is the justification I'm going to use when I name my kid Pennsylvania.

I have the weirdest name ever, it was name after a royalty name, is almost similar name of mine, well that's what every teacher tells me when they take attendance. At first everyone makes fun of my name and i refuse to be called "Amairami" BACK THEN. I sort grew out of it but everyone just call me by the name "Amy". there is still some douchbags that still make fun of my name sometimes I get complimented and I stay with the positive side.

There are other names including mine tho

Patience

Gladys

many few i know of

I just think it depends on the name it self.

I think it depends of a name, I think Arizona and Savanah sound pretty. But if it was, like USA or something, it wouldn't.

Whaat? Haha, really? I think Iowa is just really pretty as a name! I actually even have a story character called Iowa!

It all depends on how the kids enviroment will react to it. Like in school, having a kid named after a place he might get picked on a bit.

My cousin is considering that for her baby if it's a boy, which will arrive within the month.  Her other two girls are Brooklyn and Charlotte, which are the names of cities in the U.S. and those names are fine.  There's nothing wrong with it as long as it is an actual name.

Ive met girls who have been named Georgia and Virginia. But it seems normal to be, but if someone was named like Massachusetts, it would be a little weird. But Georgia and Virginia seem like names of places that fit well with being names of actual people. :)

Yeah, true. An that's the book! Haha I hadn't read it I just know a few people who're really into it.

Yeah, I read about that a few years ago. Parents must have been on something else.

Thank you! Haha yeah, I've just been told to have really weird names for children (I also consider naming a son "Lucifer"), so it's good to hear someone thinks my idea sounds fine xD I think Iowa is really pretty too :O But everyone has their own opinions so long as it's not 'New York' that should be fine xD York is a cute name on itself, but not the 'New' part.

I mean it depends.

Yes, there is Charlotte, Virginia, Mary(land), Georgia, Caroline(a), Louis(iana), Brittany, Britania, France(s)

But no

Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Alabama, California, Mexico, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Thailand, Connecticut, Nigeria, Niger

Arizona is pushing it. Maybe if he/she had a nickname

Penn's woods. It stems from Latin, so I support it. Plus, it sounds strong

I'm not really a big fan of it. I mean Savanna, Dallas, and Charlotte (my favorite) sound normal to me but it someone named their kid....I dunno Oklahoma or Wyoming then I'd wonder what they put in their food. I guess it just depends on how open people are to the name and what that person deems as a fitting name.

I'm sorry maybe I make too many racist jokes but if I had a kid named Niger then I would always misspell his name by accident

Just think of people trying to say it.

Sometimes I hear it in the French way which would make more sense to spell it Nigre. Other times it is pronounced with an extra g

I like Latin names/words in general also, but for a lot of things, namely video games they can be terribly overused.

For example, the elements. Sorry but I've seen enough of the name "Aqua". I don't like how Aqua, Terra, and Ventus all had Latin names because it's just too much of a coincidence, you know? Like where's your creativity?

It was fine. Like, when it was first done but AFTER A WHILE the Latin overdose in Japanese animes/manga/games etc. pissed me off a little bit.

Terra/solum aqua ignis glacies/gelus lumen tenebrae/umbra ventus tonitrius GET SOME FVCKIN CREATIVITY

Sometimes it sounds werid sometimes it doesn't.

Well, to defend Kingdom Hearts, they wanted to establish how the Ventus / Terra / Aqua trio is basically a foil to Sora / Riku / Kairi, who uses the same concept for names except with a Japanese etymology. And since everyone in the Western world knows at least some Latin words, well... But yeah, I can understand what you mean. English, Japanese, and Romance languages are the only 3 that exist in anime-land.Anyway, I would love for someone to be named after Djibouti. Srsly

Not to be rude, but it's probably because both Georgia and Virginia (the states) were named after people in the first place. So it's kinda like indirectly naming your kid after a person.

It doesnt matter to me as long as its nice and the kids like it. I gave my 2 sons names that I think they'd accept and like(didnt want them questioning why I gave them their names and why I wasnt considerate of their feelings), and they did.

The kids at school will be either cool about this or murderous.
