Why should you listen to reviews? Go by your own opinion!

Posted
Guys, seriously, why should you let reviews dictate how you feel? Most reviews just comparise it to others and go into it with a negative mind. Everybody is different and had different opinions. It all depends on the mood you are in with regards to experiencing it! Why should you let someone else dictate what YOU should think? Just because the movie got goo reviews does not mean that it is "good" I'm sure you have all come accross movies that you did NOT like but others did and vice versa. When you go to a movie and say that it is your favourite movie, you say it is so because you enjoy it, it is YOUR favourite movie regardless of what other people think! Why should you be so worried if it is gonna be "good"?  Is it only good because other people say so or because YOU think so. Pretend that you are the ONLY person on Earth who likes it or has seen it, would you still like it then?

Even if you do not like it, why not help out and respect those that do? Think about how you would feel if soemone tried to ruin all your fun. So what if you are "tough" and "a big boy/girl", NOT everyone is. For some people, this is ALL that they have to look forward to in the world. Frankly, I DO NOT want to live in a world where everyone treats each other like shit, making fun of and acting liek robots lettign other people control them.

Don't be a follower and think and go by what others think. Think for yourself, be a leader

I always go by what I usually like. If something looks good I give it a chance. If I'm not sure about it I ask a friend who likes similar things. If they like it then I give it a whirl. Reviews on things are usually to harsh anyway.

Nobody really changes their opinion based on a review if they've already experienced it. They're just there to give you an idea of if you want to buy the product.

Yes and for somethings may may need to look up but we're talking about movies and games etc. Most people just go by teh review and do NOT give it a chance at all

Exactly, if you're unsure about a game you either would watch a review or rent it to get a general jist of what you're in for, that way it can save your time and money to not be disappointed. Imagine going by that logic to just 'try' it, buying Alien Colonial Marines for example because you're a big fan of the ALIEN franchise without doing any research or even playing a demo/rental before hand, you would be left severely disappointed and feel like that you have wasted your money. Reviews shouldn't dictate your opinion of course, but you do kinda need to do background research before purchasing something to save from disappointment and you wasting your money.

Well yeah 'cause those things are expensive. If I played it at a friends house and thought it was dope I would probably go out and buy it regardless of reviews. The enjoyment you can get out of a game doesn't necessarily come from the production quality or attention to detail, but reviews can give you a good idea of whether it's worth your money or not, especially if multiple reviews agree.

I read reviews so I can know the pros and cons of something before buying or watching it. Let's say I wanted to buy a video game, but I was unsure about whether it was worth my money or not. I go to a website and read some reviews. It scored 8/10 points for having great gameplay and a compelling story, but it lacked good graphics and music. Would this stop me from getting the game? No way!

Well looking back at that comparison I realize it isn't the greatest, but you get what I am saying haha. So I never let reviews control my opinion, I just like to see what others are thinking. It really bugs me with movie critics how they usually seem to give good movies poor scores. Those are reviews I tend to avoid because 99% of the time they are being too nit-picky and in reality it's a decent movie. I agree with everything you said about being your own person and deciding for yourself, though. Especially about being a leader and not a follower. Sometimes you just need a little information to help you decide :D

I use reviews (gameplay video reviews so I can see it) and sometimes let's plays to decide whether or not to buy a game I haven't played.  I don't want to waste my money on something I knew I wouldn't like if I just looked it up when I could be buying something else I really want.

Once I've played it I don't let reviews change my mind, I'd have already made my own opinion on it when I finish it.

EDIT: Like I love Banjo Kazooie, I was watching it's spin off Nuts and Bolts and know I would never enjoy it.  The plot seems lazy, I don't like racing games, it just seems pointless to me.  So I wouldn't waste my money on it.

Yeah, screw people's opinions, lets force people to watch a movie that they're not interested in! (sarcasm)

IThank you but still why not try RENTING it so that u know for sure, or borrowing it for free! Or even watch a playthorugh on you tube,

You GIVE it a chance and go by it because you think it looks good or because you help others that want it to do well at the box office! NOT because of some shitty critics who are Unversed or Heartlesss and who like being negative, you go by what you think but not because you've been influsneced by hwta others think

Where can you rent games? And none of my friends play video games, so no borrowing from them haha. Plus I'd rather just buy a used copy instead of renting it, that way I have it forever and I can sell it if I no longer want it. And I don't watch playthroughs because I'd rather not spoil the game and just go through it myself

i actually enjoyed the first movie and im looking forward to see sea of monsters

You beat me to it. The irony.

What if your own reaction to the movie was negative, and you then encountered a positive review that offered a different perspective and helped you view the product more completely?

Reviews just offer other opinions and interpretations which you might then apply alongside your own views. Exchange of ideas is healthy, and, in fact, I believe its impossible to have a discussion of any art form without reviewing it, to an extent.

I get the idea this completely relates to The Lightning Thief...

So you're telling people to blindly spend money on something they have no prior knowledge about? Reviews give people insight on a product, and are often very helpful. People that use reviews don't let them dictate their decisions, but to learn more and solidify their choice. A lot of professional game reviews seem biased, but reviews from people with a genuine interest in the subject matter are helpful, and worth looking into. You might say to rent or borrow a game, but that's not always an option. "Giving it a try" isn't nearly as good of an option as doing a little bit of research first. I prefer knowing what I'm about to throw down money for.

Is this still about that Lightning Thief topic?

As others have mentioned, we look to reviews to have a general idea of something. Reviews would never completely change my opinion of something.

I'm not going to blindly walk into a movie, buy a game or a product without knowing if it's worth my money.

But how do you know because of what osmeone else thinks? We ALLL have different thoughts ideas and opinions!!!!!!!!!!!! One person may like a certain thign which another may not and vice versa, it all depends on the MOOD you are in, I mean when you were a little kid and went to see a movie, you did not let someone else dictate how you should feel towards a movie right?

Critics in my opinion are BULLIES! Same with those stupid pointless Razzie Awards! Do you want to b influenced by a bully? Do you want someone to control how you should like something when you hate it? Who cares if it has a great execution, YOU may not think so!

You know why critics exist? So they could tell you what THEY liked about something whatever it was game, movie or book. Indeed, review is reflection of one's opinion on certain subject and thanks to those reviews we can see how OTHERS have liked something. If critics have liked something, then it probably has some redeeming qualities and is worth looking into even though it may not be my cup of tea. Like I probably wouldn't like romance movie even if it had good reviews simply because I have no interest on that genre what so ever, but I can still see if it is well made and would fans of that genre like it.

Also if critics haven't liked something then it may be because it was not their thing or it was just badly made. Also I am pretty sure that if some critic says that some movie, game etc was bad then you should look at other reviews and see if they liked it.

The reason of reviews is to give us direction what ever we should buy something or not and WHY we should do so.

And yes I always do research on games and movies I buy a lot. I see all the trailers, look gameplay and read even some spoilers to see if plot is any good. But the reviews help me to decide what ever I buy or not. BECAUSE, there are a lot of games and movies with cool trailers and stuff but then thing itself can be quite horrible (Walking Dead Survival Instinct or Avatar: Last Air Bender MOVIE)

And I don't let any reviews decide if I should buy something or not. They give me direction and hints.

They are not bad, they don't "dictate" what I buy or think is good.

Like take any movie with extremely bad reviews and it is most likely really bad if you have watched any other movies of same genre and have something to compare to. Lets take "House of blood" as an example. I haven't seen any good reviews for it. I watched it. It was pretty horrible.

Even "horrible" movie can have some good things about it, but you still should get hint that there are better ones to spend your time to.

But you don't really know if you like it till you experience it. I mean it all depends on your mood right?  I mean, EVERYTHING in life will ALWAYS have positive and negative things, but still, you should be going by what you think looks appealing. I mean, some people do not like some sports because they find them boring or too stressful to do. With movies, some people may find some execution and some things better than others ie one critic may find something boring or stupid as opposed to someone who may not and vice versa. I mean, I heard some critics praise Jeremy Renner for the Hurt Locker and I thought he was terrible, and i still think he sucks as Hawkeye.

With that being said, we still should not just "do nothing" we all have the power to invoke change. Why should one let someone dictate things and state if they are "good" or "bad" I mean, don't get me wrong in SOME things in life, you need to have someone's opinion but in this case for us people who just go out to be ENTERTAINED and forget about the world, we do not need to hear the criticisms that others get, haven't you ever heard of "none of your business"

But we're talking about something that we DO NOT NEED to know, haven't you ever heard of having too much information? And I apologize for stating that you people cannot think for yourselves, but i do not know you and what I mean to say is SOMETIMES you DO need to listen to people's opinions but we're talking about  experiences things that we have that is part of our Patriciers, things that are US! One's favourite movie is different from the rest, just as one experiences a movie different from the rest. Do you realize how rude it is to say that one's favourite movie is crap and won the Razzie Award for Worst Picture?
