Would you guys mind if the YouTube autoplay code was disabled?

Posted

It's annoying going to a member's profile and having a song automatically play. DChiuch has said he'll only disable it if you guys support the decision to remove it.

Update: Thank you everyone for voting. It has been decided that the autoplay code will not be disabled but DChiuch "will see about having a per-user disabling option sometime in the future, but this will be pretty difficult to make so I don't know when it'll happen."

A good result for everyone involved.

  • I love the autoplay. So yes. I would mind.

  • This says everything. It's not allowed on the forum, so there's really no reason to make people who like having autoplay music on their profile suffer.   Yeah, there are some people who have bandwit

  • I don't support the decision.   It's already not allowed on the forums (and anyone who posts them sooner or later the post is edited to remove the autoplay part), I think it's fair to allow people to

You're quite lazy if you find it difficult to press a button to play a video.

Like I said: just make it a policy to put the video at the top of their screen. That way everyone's happy.

I personally never said it was difficult, only extremely annoying.

It would be impossible to police that.

No it wouldn't.

1: people have no real reason to try to break that rule

2. If they do by mistake, just notify them to fix it.

I like auto play. It's not a problem on the profiles of others. If there is an instance where I do not like the sound, I simply mute my computer.

No complaints here.

If you're thinking that way, we could easily do the same for disabling auto-play so it's right there and you can play it straight away.

But why? There are a lot of people who really like autoplay (more than those who don't like the autoplay, based on the votes), so I feel like my solution would be a good compromise.

Based on the few people who did vote it was actually pretty even.

It wouldn't resolve the issues though.

No one's going to someone's profile to listen to music. People shouldn't have to go to a profile and press stop on a video.

What do people get out of having music autoplay on their profiles? Nothing.

I like the autoplay function for profiles since it makes me nostalgic for the days of MySpace without the great amateur graphic design work. I do think it's annoying when someone puts a video at the bottom of their page or if it's hidden in between thousands of gifs and .png files, so I try to keep mine at the top so it's more conspicuous.I think it's more of an issue on people cluttering their profiles than the issue of autoplay, but that's just my two cents. It sometimes does get annoying if someone uses autoplay on the forums and it's not the first post, but I thought that was already a resolved issue.

You are not allowed to post the autoplay code on the forums, that is a rule. But people still do it sadly.

*looks at votes* No, there's a discernible lead in those who want it to stay.

What "issues"? The "issue" that you don't like it and therefore it shouldn't be there?

No one's going to someone's profile to listen to music.

Well of course they aren't going *just* to listen to the music. They're going to find out more about the person, and the music can help that. For example, going to my profile shows that I'm a silly person, and the music shows that I am a silly person.

People shouldn't have to go to a profile and press stop on a video.

Because that's so difficult.

They gain a simple background theme. It's fun, and a lot of people enjoy it. Why else do you think people ask to do it, and why would Weedanort make a topic on how to do it, if people didn't like it?

You can simply press play when you go to a profile, it's what you do on the forums. Consistency is vital. We shouldn't have to go to your profiles and hear your annoying music.

It's different on the forums. On the forums, a video is placed there for someone to watch if they choose, as it pertains to the topic.

On the profiles, it's just there as a background music piece. Profile =/= thread.

Also, I assume if you're blatantly referring to someone's music as annoying, you don't exactly care for the person. If that's the case, why are you visiting their profile at all?

That's what it should be on profiles. A song they can listen to if they choose.

I find all music on profiles annoying. I don't go to a profile and want to hear their music. I'm there to PM them, comment on their profile or to read something about them.

Okay, so the reason you want it removed is that you find music on profiles annoying? It seems you're in the minority there, friend.

Minority? 11 people out of 27 voted they wanted it removed. What's that like 38%? Hardly minority.

So what the definition is? The point is we shouldn't have to listen to annoying music when we go to profiles. I feel sorry for all the people on low usage plans.

Autoplay really isn't that big of a deal. You know some people have it on their profiles. So why not just mute your volume when visiting a profile? Imagine it as going to bed at night and not locking your doors because you don't feel like you have to. People are still going to break in. So lock your firetrucking doors. So why not just mute your volume if you know people are going to post autoplays?

The second point, "1. It's annoying having to mute my speakers when randomly browsing people's profiles, or having to find the YouTube box and stop the video if I'm using the sound elsewhere on my computer. This can also be difficult sometimes, if the user has hidden the YouTube box somewhere not obvious."

I see that you used first person terms in that an awful lot. "my speakers" "stop the video if I'm using the sound somewhere else". You doing this for the sake of the members or because it annoys you personally?

I was just using first person terms a lot because I was sharing anecdotal examples. I'm obviously thinking about the members and not myself, I care much more about how enjoyable KH13 is for everyone than it is for me, I rarely even really browse profiles anyway. I did say that I would only make this change if the majority of users wanted it, so don't make me sound like I'm only looking out for myself! :P I get that you're in the heat of the argument but come onnnn, do you think I would even entertain the idea of this change if I didn't think it was better for everyone overall?

Anyway, no need to argue with the above paragraph since a majority of people want it to stay, so as per what I said about the majority, it's staying. I will see about having a per-user disabling option sometime in the future, but this will be pretty difficult to make so I don't know when it'll happen.

I would be very happy with a per-user disabling option.
