After realizing that Vanitas and Ven were merged at the time that he defeated him, and that Ven's heart now rests in Sora, I just thought of this.

 

What if waking up Ven also wakes up Vanitas, but he clings onto Sora? He might not have totally died, and he's had all this time to heal; he's just temporarily asleep like Ven if it's true. And I'm pretty sure he'd be able to leave Ven at will.

 

It would be an interesting twist...

They didn't merge. Vanitas was destroyed when he was defeated and that's why Ventus needed Sora in order to survive.

While it would be interesting for Vanitas to return in that way, I highly doubt it would happen since what happened at the end of DDD.

It would make for a nice change of pace- why not?

I'm pretty much sure we'll see him again in Kingdom Hearts III,I take his appearence in Kingdom Hearts 3D as an hint of his impending return Also, he would make a perfect Nort,don't you think?

Well, Ventus survived. Maybe Vanitas survived as a side-effect of Ventus surviving. We know that the heart connection thing influenced Vanitas enough to change his face. And if Ven's heart could react in a way that made Vanitas overlay Xehanort for a second, then maybe it could also mean that Vanitas is still around. It wouldn't be the first time a scene has more than on meaning.

 

I'm sure we'll see Vanitas again in KHIII. Nomura's statement about KHIII being a summation of everything in the franchise so far, seems to me like he's also willing to bring Vanitas back, or using the Unversed, which would require bringing Vanitas back.

That depends entirely on whether or not Square wants me to throw my controller through my TV and abruptly stop playing the game.

They were only partially merged, then there's the Riku-Vanitas theory which basically states that it's possible Vanitas merged with Riku at the same time Ven merged with Sora, which, given Riku's struggle with Darkness, I think would be more interesting. Something like "So, you want to drag me into the darkness too. Well, I've go news for you, this Darkness is mine, and I'm returning it to Light. Now go away." to show that he's finally broken free of his past.

 

Sora will never go Dark side ever, that's just not in his nature. But that's not to say Vanitas can't return as himself.

Ooh I like the idea of a Riku/Vanitas thing. That would make things even more interesting then they are now.

 

Oh and ya I agree with most people, Sora/Vanitas, yaaaa, not happening.

That would sort of make sense why Riku's dark outfit looks so similar...

Except that someone getting possessed in Kingdom Hearts by someone from the Dark side isn't really a change of pace. 

 

Mostly, I don't find Vanitas threatening or capable enough of possessing the guy with the strongest heart and sense of will in the series. Vanitas track record of victories is laughably short, and if suddenly he's able to take down the protaganist just like that, it would be absurd. 

No Vanitas can't do that i don't think that won't happen because Sora is going to be The Protagonist of Kingdom Hearts III.

I know it probably won't happen, but just because he's the protagonist doesn't mean it's impossible.

 

If it did happen, we could just play as Mickey/Riku/Kairi until they save him.
