is it like a school nurse or chaplain? we had them at school too but they actually generally wanted to help the kids which was great :) "free therapist" actually sounds pretty creepy to me xD i don't think i'd actually go and see him/her :P

Yes it does actually . xD

Just watch Frasier, you'll be good to go

I went.

It wasn't forced.

NO ONE knows this, but around nine years ago, I was 11. I had this one teacher, and she was very lenient. I would pretend that I had voices in my head, and I would shout out random things in class. I was hoping to accomplish making the other kids laugh. Well, it worked the first few times. But after a span of time, the kids began to think I was a retard, and the Teacher held a meeting. My own parents wouldn't believe me, they thought I was Skitzofrenic. So for three months, I was put into a class with needy kids, and had to attend therapy. WORST three months of my life. I still remember everything.....

There's also free therapists here in this country, you go to your GP and get referred to one, the same way you can get referred to a dermatologist, dentist and general hospital work for free.  It makes sense to talk to the child beforehand and establish if they really need one or just need a good chat about their feelings, but in honesty a trained professional will have a better chance of understanding the inner working of the mind than someone who googled a few issues and think they know it all cause they read a few articles.

If there's seriously nothing wrong and it's mentioned, yeah sure it could come off as offensive, but it's better that than pretending nothing's wrong and leaving them to get worse if there is something wrong.

Well, if little Billy keeps flirting with Grandma, someone's got to talk to sense into him!

I only posted this because it was the first thing to pop into my head. It's 4 AM, I apologize.

And if you take them to a Fruedian, they probably will just think it is normal if the kid is in the "phallic stage" age range. Especially if the Grandma is the child's maternal figure.

Yeah...Instead of therapy. Let them become a murderous psychopath.

Of course, how else are we supposed to get Villains for our protagonists/heroes to fight?

They will hate you. I know I would. Fear of going to Therapy is NOT irrational, and is completely understandable. Lets look at the reasons NOT to go to therapy, or force your child to do so.1- You and your child will forever have trust issues2- Your child will feel like you've betrayed them3- Money, Time, Time, Time, Money, Money, Time, Money, Money4- Not all therapists are trying to help people, many are in it for the MONEY5- Therapists should fit your childs personality, not what you think is best6- Therapists may prescribe medicine that give false emotions. Your child won't be truly happy, they'll be MADE happyIf you think your child needs to see a therapist, talk to them first, don't just send them away and lie about it. They might not need one. Hell, they might actually be perfectly FINE, and you just insulted them by saying something is wrong with them.Think before you insult your child.

1&2:These will only be if you TRULY force them to go, and they resent it even after they have been going for a while.3: This is true, it costs lots of time and money.4: I do not know statistics for how many are in it for others and how many are in it for money. But yes, it is something to comprehend.5: It would be better to find a therapist that the kid feels safe around. If you don't feel safe, are you even going to listen or want to share anything?6: Yes, there are anti-depressents, though a good therapist should only prescribe medication when the person's life is in danger or medication is the only way to "cure" the problem. Also if there isn't a psychiatrist working at the clinic, you probably won't be getting any prescriptions. What sort of experience did you have that led you to even think of saying "don't send them away and lie about it."? 0_0 I am sorry that you had to go through something like that. Though I do believe that you should be honest with the kid about where they are going, lying about it solves nothing.

I am sorry for your unfortunate experience. Though to be fair, it seems like you brought that upon yourself. Then again the therapist should have realized you were just malingering.

Oh yeah, my stance on the issue. GET HELP if you can't manage your own kids. It could be parenting training, it could be taking the time to find a counselor that the kid trusts, but absolutely DON'T let problems grow when you can get help.

It wasn't until a few days ago that I realized it. Nine years ago, seems forever. It was such a horrible experience. Being separated like a retard. I'm twenty now, and my parents still have a hard time digesting that... :P
