Sony Changing PlayStation 3 Game Box Art

Posted

A few days ago, an interesting – and completely random – piece of box art crossed our desks here at IGN. It’s for the upcoming PS3 (and Vita) title Deception IV: Blood Ties, and as you can see below, it looks a bit different than you may expect.

As it turns out, this is no accident or one-off. We reached out to Sony to see if this will be a trend moving forward, and it will. All forthcoming PlayStation 3 software will tote a similar look, one that brings PS3 game boxes in line with the already-established look set by PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

PS3 box art had its last fundamental change back in 2009, around the time the PlayStation 3 “Slim” launched. Before the change, PlayStation 3 software came packing the “Spider-man” text similar to that emblazoned on PlayStation 3 “Fat” consoles, along with a red tag on the spine. This new iteration of PS3’s box art, rolled out very late in its lifecycle, seems to change nothing other than the color on the blue band, and is otherwise virtually identical to PS3's box art dating back to mid-2009.

So, don’t be confused when you start seeing these new boxes on store shelves at your local retailer, or at your online retailer of choice!

Thanks to our good friends at IGN.

And yes, HD 2.5 ReMIX will have this.

This will probably confuse so many people, especially the non-gamers or people who don't look up game news.

I hate when the do this, especially for collectors.. Nothing is uniform.

Eh the more blue the better

For those gamers with OCD , this would be irritating.

I have Arkham Asylum and Arkham City sitting on my shelf. Asylum has the original red labelled Spider-Man '3' art, and City has the current label. AND IT PISSES ME THE firetruck OFF.  And now they're going to release games with MORE OF THE SAME SWITCHEROO BULLHONKEY.

Damn you, Sony. Damn you so hard.

I'm sure there are more irritating things out there for gamers, like title inconsistency.

Look at that PS3 logo jump.

And I wasn't saying all gamers.  Those who play games (and thus would have a game collection in the first place) and have ocd/perfectionism would find it irking.

The original logo looks ugly.

Yeah like this really annoying thing on my shelf. The lower case letters are so irritating it makes me sick...

...Jokes aside, the blue PS3 boxes would honestly annoy me mainly due to being out of place next to my other games. There are more irritating things yes but that doesn't mean you can't be annoyed at inconsistency in your collection of games. Though everyone's different.

Oh, wow they...made them blue.

Okay.

Why are we mad?

People hate change.

This looks pretty cool. I don't mind this. I guess they are gonna try to blend in with the PS4 style boxes like how Xbox 360 and XBONE does.

This makes sense then it doesn't

I like the new logo but why would they change it almost 8 years after the PS3 came out?

they didn't need to change it in my opinion, but whatever .

Looks good, but the problem is this is going to confuse people who do not follow gaming news. They are already had set in mind how a PS3 game box looks like, while when thinking about a blue box, either PS4 or Wii U would come to mind. Hopefully, Microsoft will not jump into the blue box bandwagon, because this would then be a very confusing gen, from the game boxes to the names of two of the main home consoles.

Making it consistent with PS4 packaging.

Doesn't excuse it, but I see the reasoning.

That is actually a bad reasoning, because I feel box art is supposed to let you know by a glance what console it is for. I don't need to know what brand it is by just glancing at it.For example I can instantly tell the difference between Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube games. I van tell the difference between the X-box and 360s box art at a glance, PS2 and PS3 (even more so with the PS3 slim box art update), and I can tell the difference between a Wii U game and a Gamecube game at a glance.

It is just convenient, though now I will have to look at the logo instead of just the color scheme and packaging size/type.

Oh well, it won't bother me too much.

The European boxart for the game still keeps the black bar. Then again this might be because it won't be one of the first European games to change over.

Honestly, I dun see the problem. This is almost as bad as the people who refuse to ever play Skyward Sword just because Link's right handed. Not a big deal, and yet too many people hated on it.
