I believe it has to do with Bella having such a blank canvas personality that teen girls, single moms and horny moms can all say "That's so me" because there's no personality to actually match.  That then fueled by "hot" actors in the film.  Weird thing is though people who hate Twilight, are more likely to still be talking about it now cause it was so mainstream, than any actual Twilight fans.
