Stupid, snobby gamer at GameStop.

Posted

This is gonna be a bit ranty but I just have to get this vent out of my system because it just annoyed me so much.

Alright, so the other day I went into my local GameStop because I wanted to look around and see if there was anything in the Used bin I wanted. While there, I struck up a lovely conversation with Employee A (whose name I don't know). We talked about games that we were looking forward to, how GameStop should be selling retro games, and silly overseas preorder bonuses that GameStop would give away with games. It was a conversation that left me happy and in a good mood.

As I looked around some more, I found nothing in the used section I wanted and moved onto the collectables section. Still riding the wave of good feelings I had from Employee A, I ran into Employee B who was trying to sell me on buying collectables. He kept suggesting things to me, even after I told him that I wasn't looking to buy any more collectables at the moment. But he soldiered on, and suggested I buy a Legend of Zelda puzzle.

I responded, "Actually, I have never played any of the Zelda games before." I didn't think this was a big deal because, well I just never got into them. By the time I was self aware enough to want games as a kid, Legend of Zelda was already like 15 yrs old and being a kid I wanted the new and shiny games. At the time LoZ was that game that I was so late to the series that I didn't feel like brushing up on a bunch of lore just to play one of its many sequels. So I, unlike many gamers, look at the series without nostalgia goggles and see it as a franchise Im just not that into.

This guy, however, suddenly became very not nice to me. After I told him that, he gave me this 'you are more worthless than dirt, and I despise you, you stupid insect' look, slammed the puzzle back on the shelves, and walk away from me in a huff. Like since I had never played a Zelda game, I wasn't a 'real' gamer and not worth his time. It really annoyed me that he treated that way. I mean, I had heard of these people before who think since you haven't played their favorite classic game series you aren't a real gamer- but I had never met one before. I felt like I was unwelcome in this GameStop and needed to leave.

Just because we don't like the same games or genre doesn't make either of us less of a fan of video games- and definetly doesn't warrant this sort of treatment. I mean where do people get off treating their like of a certain game or genre making them above all other gamers? That is totally absurd! I mean, I meet people all the time who don't play or like my favorite games and I don't treat them like dirt, nor them me. We sit, we talk about our differences and why we may not like each others games or about how video games have effected our lives.

I don't know why this bothers me so much, especially after i had such a nice exp with Employee A just moments before. I would think that i would just bump the Employee B out of my mind and focus on how nice Employee A was- but no. I have had this bad moment stewing in the forefront of my brain ever since, festering and annoying me until i finally had to go on a rant!

....ah that made me feel a bit better. Sry if that was long and ranty, and wandered a bit, but i just had to rant about this.

Wait wait wait how did you figure all this out just from a look? He could've just been throwing a hissy fit because he couldn't sell you the toys he was pestering you to buy. I'm more amazed at how unprofessional he was towards a customer. Based on your description, he sounded like a teenaged employee...

Eh, it's always a hit-or-miss with the kind of interactions you'll have at Gamestop. Sometimes people are nice, other times...not so much. When Re-Coded came out, I went to my local Gamestop to purchase the it, and no sooner had I gotten to the counter, the cashier looked down at my game, and said it sucked. I never asked his opinion, nor did I ever hint that I wanted it. But, did that affect my interests? Nope. I ignored the jerk, bought it, and went on my merry little way. People who think that everyone will be interested in the same games are only kidding themselves. Just ignore people like that, I say! You like what you like! :)

wow :O im glad the people at my Gamestop are really nice! They always leave you alone and offer help when you ask or looked confused.

I'd have asked for the manager and informed him/her o the behavior.

You never act like that. I don't even act like that with people who despite KH.

That sort of attitude from a sales associate is entirely unacceptable. That wasn't professional or courteous buy any means. I've worked in retail for about two years, and you just don't do that. I would leave a nasty survey for the guy, though it is a shame that you don't remember his name. His manager would want to know about his behavior as it's likely affecting their sales in general; I doubt you're the first person that he's been snippy to.

I'm sorry that you had such an experience. Usually video game clerks are awesome folk, but this goes to show that isn't always the case.

This was a grown man in his late 20s if i am being generous. Tbh, he looked almost in his thirties. And i knew what it looked like for an employee to realize u r not buying anything. I mean there were lots more collectibles after the zelda puzzle he coulda shown me on the same shelf but he didnt. As soon as i said that i never played a Zelda game he didnt say another word and walked away. I was actually thinking of caving and buying a plushie i wanted but after that i just felt really awkward cause of the way he treated me and walked out.

I agree with what you're saying completely. Whats worse, this little scene happened in the middle of the store with a few people close around. I usually just brush bad customer service off and go on my merry way, i was just so embarrassed from people looking at me afterward that i just wanted to leave.

Um, I might be misinterpreting things a bit here, but it seems to me you may have left a bit too soon, or at least painted a picture in your mind too soon. I mean, yeah the guy acted snobbish, but he never said anything to suggest that stuff you thought about. I guess actions can speak louder than words, but if I were in that situation I would at least ask him what the deal was or asked that nice Employee A fellow about what Employee B's problem was. I don't know, I guess I just felt like it was an unresolved conflict, and maybe that's the real reason why it's been festering in your head, that there wasn't any closure. Maybe? Just my thoughts on the whole thing.
