Is it time for an openly gay Disney character?

Posted

I think Disney and the world are finally in a position to have an openly gay character with the U.S in particular allowing same-sex marriage country wide in addition to other countries already supporting it like Canada and likely soon Australia.

This is coming from an openly gay man.

I don't see the point. It'd be nice, but it's not really necessary. They'd have to make an original story too, since every character in every fairy tale is unquestionably heterosexual.

Honestly, I think it would have been more poignant before legalization because it would have made a statement that might have helped the cause. But now we've been recognized as real people, we won.

I guess I personally don't think I'd have much of an opinion if they were to create an openly Gay character. But then again, if they did... I'd probably be pretty happy. I mean, I get happy when I see a Gay couple in person. It's nice to feel like you're not alone in all of this, aside from people you meet on the internet...

So yeah, I think it's time. I want kids who question themselves to know that Gay is okay.

Hell yeah. It would be very interesting to see at least one gay character in the Disney's franchise.

I have nothing against people who are gay and i think yea, why shouldn't they also show maybe a gay character in one of their movies. Then also some kids would learn somthing about this topic too^^

nope.... never.....

I didn't vote because there was no other option. However, I don't really think it matters too much just as long as it isnt being shoehorned into an audience's face unnecessarily, otherwise it is fine.

yes i'm all for it. they just need to introduce and handle it properly. treat them as an actual character, not a walking stereotype.

lol or how about introducing them with a bait and switch

make the audience think the male and female leads are going to end up together and then have them become platonic friends in the end with the male or female lead stating that they're going to go off and spend time with their significant other

Depends. Main character? Not for a long while. Doing it now would come off as pandering, and would probably put off a lot of people. Side/supporting character? If they can do it well, I'd say go for it. But yes, it needs to actually be done well. More Kanji Tatsumis, and less Korrasamis.

Gay marriage in Greece ? Yeah , that's a nice one .

They kind of this in Frozen unless you mean main protagonist only.

Oaken and his family. His spouse is a guy.

I wouldn't mind either way.

Yes! There shouldn't even be straight Disney characters anymore! We should just have every Disney character be apart of the LGBT community!!!!!! Screw Straight people, they should burn and never be allowed ever again!!!!!!! And while we are at this lets change all the Disney Princess to be Disney Drag Queens!!!!!!!!

I don't see why not. But I don't want them to make a gay character just for the sake of having a gay character, they should make a good, relatable, well-rounded character who happens to be gay

Honestly I'm not opposed to the idea, but just because same-sex marriage is accepted in a number of countries around the world doesn't mean Disney should shoehorn in an openly gay character. I do think we are a quite a way from it too. It took Disney a long time to even have a coloured main character in their animated classics line.

They need to find a place for such characters and no doubt they will have the stories in the future, I just don't think the attention should be on "oh look this is the first gay main character in a Disney film!!" you have to remember their audience first and foremost is families, a lot of parents are still backwards in their beliefs so it can be tricky to market a film in that sense. If they just focus on telling a story that accommodates these type of characters then by all means I'd be in full support. I don't want some film to appease the SJWs of the world.

"I hearvy predict this thread will spiral into a flame war so hot, flaming Lea will be like Elsa from frozen."

Well you may not have to wait that much longer, for Once upon A Time is introducing a LGBT relationship:http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/09/18/once-upon-a-time-season-5-is-introducing-an-lgbt-romance-as-mulan-returns

Plus Mulan was LGBT earlier on the show. I'm honestly hoping its NOT Merida, because:

A) She's Pixar and Pixar is so near and dear to my Patricier and it would just ruin my image of it

B) It would ruin Merida character, as she is a strong, independent women who does not need romantic love. That's what Brave is all about, we do not need any of this romantic stuff, homo or not. As well, per Disney's recent track of family/friendship love with Frozen and Maleficent, it would just not make any sense to go there, at least with a recent character.
