Should I Upgrade To The New Nintendo 3DS?

Posted

So lately I've been thinking about upgrading to the New Nintendo 3DS. I've had my original Aqua Blue 3DS since I bought it at launch and it still works like new since I take REAL good care of my game systems. But I've been thinking about getting the New Nintendo 3DS mainly because it has faster loading times than the original 3DS. But I am not sure if I want to upgrade since my original 3DS still works fine. But still, is it worth the upgrade to the newer version? Because even if I do upgrade I won't trade in my regular 3DS since it works fine (plus the fact that the original 3DS's are now rare to find thanks to Nintendo no longer manufacturing them)

Since your 3DS works fine, I really don't see the point in upgrading. I think you'd be better off saving your money for something more important.

I don't think it's that necessary unless you want to play Hyrule Warriors, SNES virtual Console or Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Apart from that, load times are not that big of a deal and you just "save" money from the different accessories (Amiibo reader and Circle Pad Pro), so it's your call here.

Well the key features for me (who upgraded day 1) seems to be faster loading times, able to play SNES games and New 3DS exclusive games (which aren't a lot), better 3D stability, and being able to use the c stick on games that allowed for the Circle Pad Pro, which makes it to where you can use that feature without having to buy the CPP, also is the Amiibo feature already built in. So if any of those features sounds good to you, then I suggest upgrading. But also, in your case, if you don't really want or need these features to enjoy the 3DS, you could just keep your old 3DS as these features are mainly the main difference between the two systems.

But honestly, maybe if I were you, I would save my money and get the NX when it releases, so that way you have the next Nintendo system and can play the new games on it that I am sure there will be a lot of exclusives.

Yes. The processing speed is faster, you can play a portable Xenoblade Chronicles and The Binding of Isacc and it's more customisable.

i'd say yes if you were trading in your old 3DS for trade credit. otherwise it'd be a waste to pay full price for essentially another 3DS when all you're looking for is slightly shorter loading times.

I don't own the New Nintendo 3DS, so I can't give you both sides of the equation, but I can help by providing the reasons that I decided against the upgrade.

The New Nintendo 3DS is flashier, true, but what am I really gaining out of the upgrade that would profit me?  I have a Wii U to play virtual console, so that's no selling point to me, and there are very few New 3DS exclusive games that would make it worthy of an investment.  In general I have to see at least 3-5 games that I'd like which would make purchasing a new console be worth it to me, but I really don't see that being the case with any New 3DS installments.

My 3DS still functions perfectly fine, and if I upgrade to the New Nintendo 3DS it's only a short matter of time before the new series of handheld gaming comes out.  Since there are so many games still being released and support the original 3DS I see no point in the upgrade, because the new fancy features aren't enough to sell me on the newer console.

Anyhow, those are just my thoughts and some reasons that I didn't purchase the New 3DS.  Perhaps in this you can relate to some, or you'll see the flaws in my logic that don't work for you.  Either way, good luck in your decision!

After I upgraded to the New 3DS last year I thought I would regret it, but honestly I don't. It's far better than the Aqua Blue launch 3DS I have. It's understandable to be sceptical, it has few too exclusives for some to see any point in upgrading, but it's the definitive version of the 3DS.

If you are interested in any of the exclusive games (SNES games, Xenoblade, Binding of Isaac and whatever else there is) then it's definitely cool to have these on the go. Toss in amiibo support without needing that hockey puck and it's pretty cool.

I really like the customisable faceplates, the c-stick, the fast load times, and the better design compared to the original 3DS. For this I recommend the system and the New 3DS isn't a total waste of money.

Nah I would just wait to see what Nintendo is going to do with the Nx because if the rumors are true their next portable is going to be a beast and you might be kicking yourself if you didn't wait.

I wouldnt pay 200 bucks just for a little bit of faster loading it's just not worth it. Not too much longer now sit back and wait to see what Nintendo does with the nx and what kind of next portable we get. People are insane if they think theres not going to be another handheld Nintendo is the king of handhelds and they're not going to get rid of that market not without a fight.

And what I mean by fight is the fight with the smartphone and app market since that's all what the kiddies are doing these days.

The New3DS can be the next series it can be the next isntallment for the NX.

It is just released abd there can still come games exclusive to New3DS.

You may be correct, but I just feel that Nintendo has lingered on the DS series for so long that it's only a matter of time before the next new handheld comes out. There isn't much that the New 3DS offers that the 3DS doesn't have, or at least not enough exclusives that would make it the next new console.

It may change over time, but as things stand right now and the current direction that the New 3DS is going I don't see any real reason to waste money on it, but that's just my stance.

It's up to you really. I prefer the New 3DS as it is faster and has slightly more games to play.

Well, in all honesty, I also still have my original 3DS, and I'm perfectly happy with it, because that little handheld serves me well for my portable gaming needs! I'm currently playing Dream Drop Distance on it right now!  But well, in terms of upgrading, that's entirely up to you!  If you see that the upgrade is good enough for you to invest your money on, then hey, go ahead! :)

I don't see a reason to upgrade. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

My first 3DS was a New 3DS XL, because I really wanted to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, as well as having use for any Amiibo I may get. But it turns out that it gave me much more potential than I thought at first! The space given is amazing, the loading times (as you said) are much quicker, the volume and 3D sliders click in place at off/mute so you don't bump them up on accident, and while you can't put an SD card inside, it's still pretty good.

If you still have a good 3DS, but still feel like you want to get a New 3DS, save up for one, then buy it. You can then transfer any data from your old 3DS to the new, and afterwards you can either trade in your old 3DS for in-store credit (GameStop most likely), or keep it for extra streetpasses! Booyah! ;) Or, do what you want.

I definitely reccomend keeping it for streetpassing because you can put streetpass data for a single game on both systems, and then you can still get streetpasses for that game. I did so with my brother's SSB4 3DS; we created Streetpass data for it on my brother's 3DS, then I put the game in mine, and created streetpass data on there, and boom, I get streetpasses from my brother for the game with just one copy of the game! It works. :)

In the end, it's up to you how you want to spend your money.

Rock on!

You can put an SD card in the system, well Micro SD, you just unscrew the back of the bottom screen and it's there. All the systems come with a 4GB by default I'm pretty sure.

Also true. But the load times will at least make loading screens faster even though they aren't bad on the original 3DS.

Yeah I could do that. But I really want Nintendo to show me the console first before I start saving money for it.

Thanks for the reply (:. Though the biggest reason I kind of want the New Nintendo 3DS is because of the load times are a bit faster. But the other features you mentioned are nice too.

Yeah you're right about that. I REALLY hope Nintendo does a good job at marketing their new system unlike what they did with the Wii U. They did a terrible job trying to explain the difference between the Wii and Wii U. But  somehow I have a feeling the NX will be like all their other home consoles.

Same here. I am happy with my original 3DS as well. The only reason I kinda want a newer version is because of the faster load times. But you're likely right. I might stick the the one I have. I'l give it more thought.

Such a great choice of words xD.

Homebrew and Smash Bros. and other game mods would be a billion times easier with the new New 3DS if you're into that.

Load times are only noticeably faster on Smash 3DS. Everything else is a second or less, from my experience (KH3D, Pokémon X / Y)

So, have you come to a final decision?

Yeah. I think I'll stick to my original 3DS for a little while longer.

Yeah. I think I'll stick to my original 3DS for a little while longer.

A little advice try to sell it already and see if you can get a nice price.

Then you have your answer.

I have sold my 3ds xl for a nice price although it was a limited Fire Emblem.

Hmm, well, at least in my opinion, the load times aren't that much of an issue, but again, the choice of upgrading is entirely up to you!  And well, the fact of the matter is that there's probably going to be a few New Nintendo 3DS exclusive games that the original 3DS won't be able to support, ya know?  So yeah, the upgrade may be necessary, but think it over, ya know? :)

I've seen a few suggestions that you sell your current 3DS and then buy a new one, but I'd highly advise against doing that. You'll need the old 3DS still to do a system transfer, so don't sell it until after you've done that. Otherwise, you'll lose access to your digital games and anything else connected to the system.

As for whether the upgrade is worthwhile or not: it depends on what you want out of the system, but personally, I've been incredibly happy with my New 3DS XL and I can't imagine going back to any other model of the system. It doesn't add a whole lot, so a lot of people without one thing that it just has minor improvements, but I feel like the additions go a long way. Having the c-stick and ZL/ZR buttons is pretty nice, the improved power helps certain apps/games load faster (Namely Smash and internet-related apps like the eShop) and can play some games that don't work on the original model at all (Xenoblade 3D and SNES Virtual Console titles being the two main examples. I personally love being able to play games like Xenoblade and EarthBound on the go, so I'd say the upgrade's worth it in that regard as well). If the standard 3DS gives you everything you want out of the system, you'd be fine without upgrading, but the New model is the 3DS in its finest form, and as someone that spends a lot of time on his 3DS, the New 3DS upgrade's made my experience with the system a lot better.
