Once again, some moron from IGN claims to know better and has to "enlighten" everyone. The same old bull I have seen before only this time, he is going after Nomura. It would not surprise me that we soon see a title of an article of theirs saying "Square Enix has become a horrible company" and claim to know and say how it could become great again. Classic IGN. Well, there is only one thing to do when it comes to their garbage: IGNore it.

Too long and poorly written at times. Fan boys being fan boys.

http://www.ign.com/blogs/mortero056/2013/05/27/tetsuya-nomura-designer-of-final-fantasy-is-a-joke

Ignoring the fact that it is from IGN what is your HONEST opinion on this article? Since it does somewhat involve Kingdom Hearts as well...

I bet 90% of people on this site will read the title of the thread and write " HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY PAPA NOMURA HE'S A CREATIVE GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!

This is all subjective and to a point the writer is correct. But you can't blame a creative designer for ruining an entire franchise. The point he's making is that when Nomura worked on a final fantasy game it was a usually game he didn't enjoy and that the designs for iconic characters of the franchise are looking like generic anime characters. For example in Dissidi.

I've seen this complaint amongst the FF faithful and to be honest they have a point.

Did you know during the development of Final Fantasy X Nomura purposely drew Lulu and the cast with tons of belts and zippers, for a single reason

He wanted to give the game designers a challenge when creating the models.

People in this fanbase thinks he's some sort of Godly creative genius that bleeds originality.

In fairness he directed KH1 and KH2 which are some of the best video games ever imo. Nowadays he's an incompetent writer but his art is great.

Most of the fanboy rage at this article will be due to lack of understanding of Square Enix as a company. You can disagree of course, but don't be blind.

What's wrong with challaging your modlers? It helps keep their skills sharp.

Challenging is fine but do you know how long that takes? Have you seen how many belts and zippers are on Lulu, it looks like a nightmare to create.

IMHO, that's nothing compared to what the art director of Dragon Age Inquisition did. He had them spend a week designing, detailing and modling the genitals of a certain character, only to have them slap a big black box over it in the one scene where it could possibly be visible, then conveniantly place the camera in the same scene so a clipboard covers the box.

Lulu's belts may be a PIA, but at least they're visibile in the final product. What the other guy did was just troll them and make them waste their time.

What I dont understand is why he has a problem with them going forward with a design that was obviously very popular with the people who were buying the games?  To not do so would be very irresponsible I feel.  I dont mind the belts and stuff, I just play the game, and I had a great time playing FFVII and FFX as well as FFIX.  This guy just seems to have super sour grapes and isnt a fan of change, even when it is clearly for the better.

Man.... That's a lot to type down.... I had to speed read it all.... ( I might have to miss out on some points, and majority of the stuff mentioned is foreign to me....)

But all seriousness--

How much salt is this guy on?!

IGN-orance at its finest, much? All of that salt, apply to Morton Salt Co.

His article (to me it's like I'm reading a rant...) is so salty, I feel like If I speed read it again, my blood pressure will be high....

"Of course, the people don't care about Amano (I've met fans who don't even know who he is), as most of the third part of the community started playing Final Fantasy VII, and they believe the games have always looked like that."

At first, I don't know who Amano was. Plus, I believe some of those folks are new to the series, thus and therefore they don't know him and them. ( I may be wrong....) Heck, I got into Final Fantasy, when I got into Kingdom Hearts. At the time, I didn't know who Nomura was or the other names mentioned in this salty article! I've seen the names pop up, and my memory is fuzzy when I've seen "the making of Kingdom Hearts" from a PSM, game disc, my cousin gave me and my brother.

So, I'm thanking Nomura on that. Because, if Kingdom Hearts didn't exist, I probably wouldn't get into Final Fantasy!

There was another quote I want to add in my comment, but I'm just going to leave it alone....

EDIT: One more thing, I know he has a right to voice his opinion.

Nomura isn't perfect, no one is. But seeing more and more of his thoughts when you read it, it feels like he just hates Nomura and praises the old FF artist as a god, which is how some people view Nomura, as a god. He has some valid points, but he just starts thinking up random crap to make Nomura look like the worst person ever and writes it down. I don't like that article for that reason.

Nothing wrong with your view and nothing wrong with his. He's grown up on the classic FF stuff so he's more used to seeing Amano's work and clearly feels Nomura's isn't up to par. If Kingdom Hearts artwork suddenly changed (it never will but just pretend) and a new designer replaced Nomura I'm sure everyone here would hate the new designer. It's all his opinion

I just get the feeling that he's purposely trying to say that Nomura's artwork is awful, terrible, no good, not even trying to say that 'Oh, Nomura isn't really up to par with Amano'. I don't know, I just feel that way when I read this article.

I did read every word of it. Lol.

He's on a nostalgia trip that's why. He's used to Amano's art and to be honest when looking at FF13 characters and KH characters some people do get a big vibe of 'damn these guys are straight out of some cheesy anime'. But there's nothing wrong with that anyway.

There is a big difference between Nomura being a terrible artist and Nomura not being able to up to par with Amano. Art is all subjective anyway. But like I said before, MANY people share his opinion about Nomura but it's no big deal

Well you did your job and kudos to you for forming your own opinion unlike most of the fandom

Anywho my beef with Nomura isn't with the character designs cuz I think his designs for monsters and characters are good when he don't go overboard with belts and zippers or have characters look indistinguishable

He did design some of my favorite characters like Setzer from FF6,Cloud Strife and Zack Fair from FFVII so again not much of a problem

My beef with Nomura mostly has to do with his work as a director and writer cuz ever since FFVII Advent Children he seems to keep writing himself into a corner and he never had a cohesive flow for his stories

If it wasn't poorly written dialogue like in Advent Children it goes to gary stu villains like Xehanort and hugely underdeveloped characters like the Birth by Sleeo trio whom he barely tries to convince me of neither their friendship nor their shoehorned "significance" in the KH lore

But that's just my opinion..........emphasis on my opinion

It's not that they're from "cheesy anime"

It's the fact that after a while his designs started to feel really similar to each other as he doesn't do much to deviate from the architypes those designs fall under

There is a reason people say Lightning is a discount Squall with a cloud gender-swap design

Yeah, in reading that (and boy, is that a slog to read) he makes some decent points, but it generally boils down to preference. That's no reason to blame one guy for the faults of an entire company.

To be honest in the art part As one who admires Nomura's work and character designs i don't claim he is perfect, but i think the article is kinda bias. However the man has flaws but not THAT bad of flaws as people think.

Too late pal, most people probably didn't even click the link. Just another excuse for them to hate on IGN lol.

Like.......I'm not trying to defend IGN or anything but we should differentiate between posts from normal forum members and actual staff running the site cuz this "article" isn't even written by a staff member

And even if it was it's just written by one guy and that one guy's opinion doesn't necessarily represent the entirety of the staff working there anyway
