Yes, a King's job is to protect all his people. One issue some may find annoying about this concept is that the king cannot fully risk his life for an individual in his kingdom/country/empire. A king who would do such a thing would be a disgrace to the rest of his people for leaving them. However, if a king were to say to you that "if he were a normal person, he would risk his life to save you,"...

...then he is showing you how determined he is to make his people happy, and if you put your trust in his actions, you will surely be happy as well. That is what a true king is.
