THIS BADASS OVER HERE!

Isaac and Matthew, both from golden sun (except that Matthew was in only in Dark Dawn)

Wrex, Commander Shepard, Garrus, Siegfried, Link, Elmo, Starkiller (The first one, not the one from the second game), Fox McCloud, Wolf O'donnel, Shadow the Hedgehog.

One of the most badass characters I've seen is Vayne from FF12, primarily because he's not trying to be badass. So many characters are designed to bash the consumer over the head with the idea that they're edgy: stylized clothing, wearing black, forced dialogue, or whatever else the designer imagines is "cool." Vayne is one of the least stylized villains in Final Fantasy, and any threat he poses comes from strength of character and screen presence, rather than aesthetics. And that character is one that has achieved a monopoly over power within his political system through brains and strategy, secured his position in line for royalty, and best of all, knows how transparent his plans are, but defies anyone to come up and stop him. No sneaking around corners and congratulating himself on being clever: if people know he killed of two of his brothers, so what? The self-congratulations of stealth of one such as Seymour has been replaced with the knowledge of his own true power, which anyone is free to try and challenge, and this willingness to not run and hide makes him more badass than a person who would depart time and again with a mysterious quip or two.

 

The part that really makes him one of the true tough guys, in my eyes, actually comes not when he's presenting his power, but standing on the verge of death. Of course, he is obligated to Hulk-up in order to become the final boss, but what matters is that he does not appear aware that this event is going to happen. Rather than ask Venat for help, he apologizes for letting him down. In other words, he's accepted his death as a fact. To stare the gun down the barrel and know that there's no way out, but insisting on staring it down anyway, is truly badass.

 

(to further understand where I'm coming from, watch Godfather Part II and Unforgiven, for I judge all badassery based on Michael Corleone and the perpetual screen presence of Clint Eastwood.)
