i cant help but wonder is Salem is somehow related to the war Ozpin talked about in volume 2. In his speech he gave to all the students before team RWBY  went on thier mission with prof-... DR Oobleck

I miss Firaga actually talking sense, he had excellent points and seeing the incredible lack of criticism here now is upsetting.

This volume overall was easily the weakest of the three. The build-up was poor, there was an incredible lack of character development, fight scenes were so abundant that they became less like treats and more just convenient ways to get out of writing any kind of substance.

I'm hoping that next time we actually get a decent story and character development. This one relied far too much on shock value, a random piece of huge information that they never alluded to before, and the aforementioned action. I really hope that they were just using this volume as kind of a base so that next volume we do get the character development that they were doing well with before.

I do have to agree with you on that it's not my favorite volume , that still belongs to two.  This volume was a build up to how the rest of the series is going to go.  They mentioned that the first three volumes where like Act one, or Season one, to do some establishment.  Yes some of those establishments have been sloppy I will not argue with that. But we now see the direction that the show is going and with how the volume ended the only thing they really can do now is develop the characters mostly so Ruby, Juan, Ren and Nora for the most part of Volume 4 and probably some of the rest of team RWBY as well.

Holy ships.

What did I just see?

Don't get me wrong - I still love RWBY because it's characters are worth watching for (CURSES! Where's the action for Sun?! He's backwater material now!) but all of the fatalities from Penny to Torchwick to Pyrrha... You just gotta ask yourself "WHY?!" It just wasn't the right show or atmosphere to have it in.

The ending, however, was fitting. It's similar to Volume I in which it sets up a new baddy by showing them at the end (Or is that another one of Cinder's inexplicable powers?), albeit with all the death that happened, it barely felt so.

Overall, not very happy with post-Vytal Tournament and not happy with the insanely dark twist that RWBY is victim to.

I agree with the dark tone part. It escalated too fast. I personally thought this would either have been taken slowly or later on the volumes (or both).

It... It just seems to be the case that many times lots entertainment these days is geared towards a "mature audience". Where's the FFVII, where you went through all this crazy unbelievable crap before you actually buckled down into the main story? Where's the RWBY Volumes 1 & 2, where you could combine serious plot with fun and lovable characters? Where's the entertainment in entertainment?

RWBY Volume 3 started out cheerful. Yay, Vytal festival! And it was excellent at mixing that atmosphere in with the introduction of Qrow and the progressing plot of the baddies. So far so good. But this doesn't become some Sonic and Eggman story where the heroes stop the baddies little acts as they come back for more anymore. And the drama... it's too... serious. I agree with everyone here when they say the maidens' plot was a terribly tacked-on way to provide plot, given that they never alluded to such a thing... well, except for "silver eyes".

Semblances are all over the place. What is Ozpin's power again? Super-speed, generating force field shadow clone whaaaaaaat? Semblances are, in my mind at least, a power of "balance", as shown in Volume I. The semblances are supposed to be part of what makes these "teams" worth making, as their semblances compliment each other. Cinder is understandable, since she took Summer's power (but even then... isn't her semblance fire? Why is she able to conjure up a bow and arrow again?), but... ugh, the semblances post-tournament are just stupid.

I have to disagree (and agree at the same time). As a lot of you said, (Firaga, Emerald, yourself and others) the maiden storyline wasn't built up very well. The first 2 volumes had mostly been about the White Fang and it would've made sense to have a big reveal about them instead of the Maidens. It just came out of nowhere but at least it made the plot move forward. But I think anyone could've guessed that RWBY was going to go dark. I mean just look at the very first trailer, the 'Red' Trailer. It was pretty grim (no pun intended) and dark... I was expecting the dark turn but I agree that it was a little drastic. It happened too fast. I mean, 6 episodes and we had like 3 deaths, while the first 28 episodes only had one. I do think that the show will get a little less dark when Volume 4 starts. I sure hope so, they can't just take all the fun away. RWBY without it's comedy is NOT RWBY. So I expect them to bring back the comedic relief in the first half of Volume 4 and hopefully they'll find the right balance between drama and fun. The first volumes were too much fun and not enough drama/plot progression and this volume was too much (SUDDEN) drama not enough fun. I liked all the volumes and I don't like to complain about the show but I can't say there's not a lot of work to do. The story just needs balance.

EDIT: I guess I agreed with you more than I disagreed. LOL

Now this is beautiful right here. We got a guy who reacts to RWBY episodes and apparently the RWBY crew watches his reactions every week. They even sent him a video of them reacting to his reaction along with some exclusive RWBY stuff. Another example of how in touch RoosterTeeth is with thier audience. I watch some RWBY reactions too (renagades react, sibayans, dangIT, lost pause) it was my first time seeing this guy thou

I will no longer be watching the new volume of RWBY, after what has happened over the last couple of episodes.

I am officially done with the series and am extremely upset with the RoosterTeeth staff. I do not believe Monthy would have wanted this for his show. I am disappointed of how this series went after his death.

Monty had the series thought out way ahead of this. Miles and Kerry kept the project going but didn't change anything from his overall design. They state this so many times in the afterbuzz interviews. If you dont want to watch thats fine but dont get the wrong idea

I am just extremely extremely disappointed. This series has let me down. The first two seasons will great, and that is all I will remember the series by.

You know you'll come back for more. You just need time to think things over after all.

As it may be, RWBY made very quick, semi-irrational choices as a series in this Volume, but they're only just opening opportunities for better growth among plot, characters, and the developers themselves. I was honestly perfectly fine with this episode, however, it doesn't excuse the many mistakes the crew has made with RWBY over at RT. But they'll get better. Monty left a path for them for quite a while from now. Miles and Kerry should also be able to carry the series on after Monty's furthest plans, as the idea was Monty's, but Miles and Kerry hold as much importance to the series as he did.

For now, I'll leave it be, but we all know what would pull out a response like this and it will only last awhile. It happens everywhere, with every show, every movie, every game. Hell, I once hated Sora's new outfit for KH3, but I've grown to like it over time. The choices made in RWBY may hurt, and we may not always like them, but some of them grow on us. In fact, many of us are already theorizing what could come in Volume 4 and questioning some of the things that were jammed into this huge, 28 minute episode. It's honestly only exciting to think about. RWBY may not always have the best writing, but it stands strong still and it will continue to push forward whether or not people like it.

It doesn't seem like we'll see any of Team RWBY except from Ruby for a long time. By the looks of things it's going to be all about Team RNJR - Ranger; Ruby, Nora, Jaune, Ren.

Which I actually like, I don't think Ren and Nora got enough screen time.

Hmm... Don't know how I completely feel about this volume. I'm gonna go Firaga on this and give it a harsh critique.

(I'm not gonna bother giving this a spoiler, if you haven't seen the finale then don't read this yet.)

For the volume as a whole, I'll say what mostly everyone else is saying: The dark tone was way too rushed, without enough buildup. I understand the writers were trying to give it shock value, but it just turned out a little more bland than it could've been. The beginning of the volume is too repetitive and there doesn't seem to be too much going on besides "Oh another fight!"

It seemed like this volume was all over the place. It tried to be the tide-turner volume but it just ended up being a weird mix of backstory, unnecessary fight sequences, and a decent ending. Next to the character deaths, the ending was the only thing that left an impact on me. Not the entire finale, but the setup for the ending.

As for the finale, it was... meh. I wasn't surprised to see a main villain, but surprised to see her this early. I guess that was the writers trying to add relevance to this volume last second. Either way, Salem has a cool design that gives of a Tokyo Ghoul / Naruto type feel.

Pyrrha's death was no surprise because of the buildup. I'm gonna disagree with what some of you guys said and flat out say I think she's dead and gone. I believe that Pyrrha wasn't even the one destined to be the Fall Maiden in the first place, and it was a mistake by Oz and Co. Hence Cinder's "It's unfortunate you were promised a power that was never truly yours." I think bringing Pyrrha back at any point would be beating a dead horse.

What I did like, however, was the ending with Ruby, Jaune, Nora, and Ren. I didn't expect these guys to be the four to survive, and I'm not sure how I feel about that team. But the idea of them traveling to Haven (I believe it's Haven, correct me if I'm wrong) because that leaves a lot of open doors for character development, changes in scenery, etc. No offense, but I'm glad that they've moved away from Beacon, because I want to see more of the different kingdoms and (maybe) develop a stronger lore to back up the plot.

So, in general, the volume wasn't the best, but I like where it's going, so hopefully the next one has a little bit more character.

Spoilers for those who didn't read the manga.

I take back what I said about Weiss' father. He mostly likely is being overprotective, but I'm now worried about Weiss herself because of a certain douche bag. I hope Winter helps her out, because that guy is going to push Weiss to the edge. (Not Adam edgy tho.)

I do not believe Monthy would have wanted this for his show. I am disappointed of how this series went after his death.

I think you might've been under the impression that RWBY was a comedy/action-adventure show when it's really comedy-drama/action-adventure show. The drama was always present but it got super intense this volume. I understand what you're saying but I think the dark turn was predictable (of course I don't think anyone expected it to be this drastic)

My Volume 3 review(spoilers ahead):

Strong points:

1) THE MUSIC

One of the many things this volume did better than the other 2 is the music! I mean the vocal tracks were just as good as what we heard before but the score was so much better. It was a lot more complex and original compare to the Volume 1 or the Volume 2 score where almost every track sounded like a re-arrangement of older tracks like Mirror Mirror and Red like Roses. The tracks were also very fitting with the new turn the show has taken. Props to the composers!

2)THE ANIMATION

I don't think anyone can complain about that. It has come such a long way since Volume 1! It used to be super clunky (just look at that scene where Sun says he's a great stow away and laughs). Now, it looks like a real TV show. The facial animations have increased, it all looks a lot smoother and the coloring is more vibrant and pretty :)

3)PLOT PROGRESSION

Even though it might not have been done in the best way, this volume brought a lot of great plot progression! Cinder's plan was finally put in motion and new storylines were introduced. We've finally moved on from the "World-building" era.

4)CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Many characters had their chance to shine! Weiss in a few episodes with her sister. We learned more about her, her environment, her family and her strained relationship with her father. We also got to see Pyrrha's character evolve. Pyrrha was always the perfect girl, it just looked like nothing could take her down. This volume has shown that she has weaknesses too and also showed her emotional fragility. Tough times for our favorite party girl Yang too. Let's just say, she can't put both of her hands in the air like she don't care no more ^^ Cinder also got to be a relatively good, calculative, villain...but she didn't have a good motive which is bad for any villain. For all we know, she simply wanted to be powerful and that's not enough of a good reason to go on a killing spree. Jaune also got some nice moments through his relationship with Pyrrha and Ruby FINALLY got to shine! I mean it was super weird to have the main character in the background. Now she's back in the spotlight. Blake didn't have much development though, but after the first 2 volumes, I think she's good.

5)FINAL TWIST

I really liked the ending of the volume. Ruby going berserk was not surprising at all to me, but seeing Salem, the narrator as the bad guy was a great twist. Same thing for team RNJR, team RWBY's being separated and Qrow being an animorph (and, possibly, Raven too). The twists about Salem and Qrow are great reasons to go back to Volume 1 and 2 and look for crows, ravens and listen carefully to Salem and Ozpin's dialogue. It might also be interesting to listen to Volume 2's WOR as they were also narrated by Salem.

Weak points:

1)PACING

Just...really bad. I think it's been talked about enough, I'm getting tired of talking about this lol. Just too much in too little time. Too drastic. I know it seems contradictory with what I said about plot progression but what I'm trying to say is that even though the pacing wasn't good, it did bring interesting plot to the show.

2)BALANCE

I talked about this and this weakness has been present since volume 1. There's just a terrible (yeah TERRIBLE) balance between comedy and drama in this show. Just fix it. --' I know they put in a lot of drama for shock value as Yang said and I'm not gonna lie, it worked for me, but there was just too much. I also have to agree with everyone saying there were too many fight scenes. If they keep this up, fights won't even be interesting by the end of the next volume.

3)BUILD-UP

I liked the new plot points that were brought up but they could've been introduced before. In Volume 2, there could've been a few mentions of the seasonal maidens, or the Grimm dragon or even Salem. Cinder could've simply mentioned a superior in the previous volume, that line about "Autumn's condition" could've fitted in an Ozpin/Glynda/Ironwood conversation too...just a few simple things like that.

Overall I liked this volume and unlike a lot of people, I think it might be the best of the three. I just know Volume 4 is gonna 3000 times better if they can balance things. The next arc has interesting plot points to build upon and the end of this first story arc was great!

7.5/10

Man I hate being late to this. Anyway, thoughts on Chapter 12:

This chapter was amazing!

  • Adored that kiss
  • Loved the tension in this chapter
  • Shocked by Pyrrha's death
  • I find Burnie to be the perfect choice to voice Taiyang cause he sounds like a really good father figure, which is ironic considering who he voices in Red vs. Blue. xD

Considering I'm late to this, I wish I could say more but it would feel kinda pointless to me.

Thoughts on Volume 3:

This volume easily tops the other two by a landslide in my opinion.

  • Visually, the show looked SO much better and looked absolutely gorgeous.
  • I loved the dark tone of this volume and how much more serious it got.
  • The battles were still great.
  • I NEED the music!

Overall, I give this volume 10/10. I don't give a crap if you tell me some things were rushed cause I don't care about that kind of stuff, what I call The 'Laws' of Making a Good Story.

So yeah, I finished watching Volume 3 two days ago...and I just gotta say...

Posted Image

That, ladies and gents, was my reaction throughout!  The final few Episodes of Volume 3 really sucker punched me unexpectedly!  I felt as though I was being stabbed in the heart numerous times and being decapitated constantly!  I didn't see Pennyochio's death coming, so color me surprised!  Also did not expect Yang's arm to be cut off like that!  TOTAL SURPRISE THERE!  Heh, too bad she doesn't have a healing factor like me, otherwise, she'd have been fine!  But yeah, what got to me the most was Pyrrha's death!  Good lord she was such a babe!  A shame she had to go out like that!  Again, I was like this...

Posted Image

But wow, I gotta say, loved that kiss she shared with Joan Of Arc! (Ahem, I mean, Jaune Arc!) xD  Definitely made me have goosebumps!  But yeah, overall, Volume 3 was quite the thrill ride, and I didn't see any of this coming!  Loved the darker tone, and loved how everything basically went to hell for everyone!  I love the Four Maiden Babes, and that whole legend schmidt surrounding them is pretty cool! I also loved how Emerald Chick and Mercury Stud met Cinder Babe! But good lord, now, to have to wait for Volume 4...it's gonna be torture!  But hey, it's gonna be worth the wait! :D

Also, just throwing this out there, Pyrrha was based on Achilles from Troy, and that dude got shot in the heel and was killed!  Same thing applied to Pyrrha!  She got shot in the heel and then shot just above her...ahem, bazongas!  So yeah, interesting parallel there...

So, by going with this logic, does this mean good ol' Jaune's gonna die a fiery death?  Cuz his name kind of reminds me of Joan Of Arc's, and I think she was burnt alive! Could this be true for Jaune too!?  It would be interesting! :O

But yeah, this Volume of Rwby was great!  So this gets my Deadpool seal of approval!  10 OUT OF 10 ALL THE WAY, BABY!!! :D
