Seriously. When the term "One Winged Angel" was a metephorical reference to a fallen angel cast out of heaven, used to allude to the fact that Sephiroth had fallen from grace only to become the symbol of evil, it made sense.
Taken literally as it has since become in Crisis Core and beyond, however, it doesn't work.
First off, you can't fly. You cannot get enough lift with one wing to actually take off. I suppose, in theory, if you were to drink a nautical ton of Red Bull you might be able to stimulate your nervous system enough to flap that one wing like a mad man, but even then, the most you could do is fly in circles like a fool. There's no balance, and you are only being propelled from one angle, like a person using only one paddle in a canoe.
Second, if just standing on land, you would tip over. A wing that size would off set your balance considerably, especially if you had nothing to counter it. Not to mention that having it there is like having a massive drag chute just begging to slow you down, and if a particularly strong gust of wind were you hit, your balance would be even more skewed.
Third, how does it function in regards to clothes? Sephiroth has it jutting out from his duster, but does that mean he can't take his coat off anymore? When it bursts out, wouldn't it just come out of his back as normal and push the fabric of the coat away from it, rather then slipping through whatever hatch or hole is woven into it?
Fourth, given that all the one-winged fellows we've seen thus far seem to rely heavily on speed and agility in their attacking styles, wouldn't having a gigantic wing encumber their movements grossly? I mean, I get not wearing a ton of armour, because the design is to move speedily, but wouldn't a giant wing be just as much of a hinderance?

Things to think about.
