Thank you for this.  No one ever understands.  Also, his sword is probably a little unbalanced, which means he should be even slower.

Dude, you're talking about Final Fantasy VII. In which a scrawny man like Cloud can lift a Buster Sword probably twice his weight. And where a man can summon a meteor and the planet can stop it itself, and the planet is pretty much alive. And a man (Vincent) can live forever. And Safer-Sephiroth is like what the hell is that!?!?

And you decide to talk about Sephiroth's firetrucking one wing?

Uh alright well first off Final Fantasy isn't logical. It is a fantasy game I know isn't possible to fly with one wing in real life but it also isn't possible to grow a wing out of the side of your shoulder. Final Fantasy games aren't based on real life it's fantasy game it doesn't have to make sense

you want him to make a thread to rant about all the other nonsense from these games?

Yeah, these make much less sense than a man having one wing instead of two. Why isn't he arguing why Sephiroth has a wing at ALL?

I think the one wing is supposed to be symbolic and, even though it's not logically possible, Sephiroth and gang have managed to successfully fly with one wing.  I suppose this is where the "fantasy" part of Final Fantasy VII comes into play and we're just meant to accept everything for what it is.

As for the wing getting in the way, I was always under the impression that their wings appeared at will.  Meaning that they weren't always present.  Did you notice how smooth Angeal's back is before we get to see his wing?  I seriously doubt the guy's hiding it anywhere; there just isn't enough room.

while all your arguments are quite reasonable, there is something i feel that i must tell you

DO NOT MIX LOGIC WITH SEPHIROTH, DOING SO WILL BRING MORE CONFUSION

In Square Enix, no one can truly understand gravity.

I think you're looking to deeply into it, Final Fantasy characters hardly ever obey the normal laws of reality. Hell even their hair defies the laws of physics. It's called Final "Fantasy" for a reason xD.

Yeah, the wing is rather obscure.  I suppose mako might have a little to do with it though, I mean, they ARE supposed to be super soldiers.  Stupid Final Fantasy logic.

True, but you have to remember that Sephiroth is left handed, and his wing is on his right.

that wasn't my point.  have you ever tried to lift and/or swing a chunk of metal that is 17 feet long?  I can guarantee that you won't be able to do it very quickly.

Aw, this is Final Fantasy.  It's not supposed to make sense! :P

Seriously. When the term "One Winged Angel" was a metephorical reference to a fallen angel cast out of heaven, used to allude to the fact that Sephiroth had fallen from grace only to become the symbol of evil, it made sense.

Taken literally as it has since become in Crisis Core and beyond, however, it doesn't work.

First off, you can't fly. You cannot get enough lift with one wing to actually take off. I suppose, in theory, if you were to drink a nautical ton of Red Bull you might be able to stimulate your nervous system enough to flap that one wing like a mad man, but even then, the most you could do is fly in circles like a fool. There's no balance, and you are only being propelled from one angle, like a person using only one paddle in a canoe.

Second, if just standing on land, you would tip over. A wing that size would off set your balance considerably, especially if you had nothing to counter it. Not to mention that having it there is like having a massive drag chute just begging to slow you down, and if a particularly strong gust of wind were you hit, your balance would be even more skewed.

Third, how does it function in regards to clothes? Sephiroth has it jutting out from his duster, but does that mean he can't take his coat off anymore? When it bursts out, wouldn't it just come out of his back as normal and push the fabric of the coat away from it, rather then slipping through whatever hatch or hole is woven into it?

Fourth, given that all the one-winged fellows we've seen thus far seem to rely heavily on speed and agility in their attacking styles, wouldn't having a gigantic wing encumber their movements grossly? I mean, I get not wearing a ton of armour, because the design is to move speedily, but wouldn't a giant wing be just as much of a hinderance?

Things to think about.

People react to two wing angel: "Meh"

People react to one wing angel: "Badass"

Wow, I had no idea Sephiroth was left-handed!  That's very interesting indeed that his wing is on the right then...

Maybe if you have as smexy hair as sepiroth you can defy laws of physics

that wasn't my point.  have you ever tried to lift and/or swing a chunk of metal that is 17 feet long?  I can guarantee that you won't be able to do it very quickly.

2 things:

1. 17 feet is a horrible over exaggeration, it's only around 10 feet long.

2. Do you need to be reminded of the fact that he's a super soldier?  Of course a normal person couldn't lift it that easily.  He is able to do it because of the fact that he was created using Jenova Cells and Mako.

If you're applying real-world physics to Final Fantasy, you may wanna save your sanity and keep away from Advent Children.  Also, bear in mind that the one-winged angel thing symbolizing falling from grace doesn't just apply to Sephiroth.  Angeal, Genesis, and even Lazard go through the same thing, even though all three of them totally ripped off Sephiroth's gig 'cause... I dunno, Nomura couldn't think of some other significance for those characters.  So, even if it's taken literally now, the symbolism still remains, though it's been watered down after it started to apply to poetry-spouting Gackt clones.

Wahahahahahahahahah

that's what I have always say, but no one hear me.

the wing is a mere accessory :P

The reason Sephiroth has such a large sword is to offset the imbalance caused by his wing (Which, even when unextended, must exist somewhere within his torso)

Combined with his super SOLDIER strength, and he's basically unencumbered. Makes one wonder much more effective of a fighter he could be without all that stuff weighing him down.

Wahahahahahahahahah

Like a handbag ?

Sephiroth : Guuurl Cloud, don't you just like my new handbag ? I traded in that silly old wing, what I was thinking ? One Wings are soooo 1997 gurl ! * handflips *

:P
