Is this a problem (regarding 'likes')?

Posted

Is it a problem if a particular member [A] has given 2000+ likes to another particular member ?

For argument's sake, let's say each of the 2000+ likes are genuine, and that the two members are friends and share opinions. Each like is on a post where they agree. Let's also say that 40% of member B's likes come from member A, and that 70% of the likes that member A gives out go to member B.

Is this a problem, and if so, what should be done about it?

Ignore the quota and pretend that this could actually happen.

Okay, I never said that everyone with a lot of likes asked for them. I said some people have it set up that they have a friend or two who always like their stuff, regardless of what it is. I really don't care about the amount of likes someone has, it's just the popularity they gain from all the fake likes is really intimidating/frustrating.

I understand that, I just don't think it's a big deal. I mean if they're willing to give the likes out then they must already like what the person typically has to say to begin with. You're not just going to like someone's posts for the hell of it.

I'm going to go ahead and give my two cents on this.

Like's don't matter. They're a meaningless virtual commodity. If people want likes, let them ask for it. They most likely won't get any anyways. But it's reverse on facebook since there's no quota, people like all the shit they see. but yeah, if somebody wants to waste their likes like that, let them.

That's not entirely correct. There are a limited number of likes, and a desire to have them by many people. That's all that makes money valuable, or any other commodity.

Meaningless, sure? But if we judged things by meaning... well this is just the beginnings of an existential crisis now.

I admit it annoys me to see people doing this (and it's blatantly obvious with some people...) because I feel like this site has become a popularity contest and it's making it extremely difficult for me to actually talk to people on here, when all they spend their day doing is boosting their status. There's pretty much a select group of people on this site who are all the most popular with each-other purely because of the amount of likes they have, and most of these likes just seem to have been because they've set it up as 'like for a like'.

But at the same time, it doesn't really matter much I guess. Likes aren't the end of the world, they don't affect anything. The only thing that pisses me off about it is that. ^

I rarely come on here anymore because it just feels like everyone-else gets ignored unless they spend all their time making random topics or getting millions of likes. Awesome site still, though. Just not too fond of the community aspect. :P (don't kill me :C)

I don't think there is anyone I know on this site who doesn't deserve the likes they have

Seriously, they're all nice people! Just talk to them! :D

I mean more that dev will like your posts for no reason. Like, he'll like a post of you agreeing with someone, but not the post you agree with.

But I tried to make it clear in the second half of my post that you're clearly doing something that deserves it (I mean, you have the most likes, and in the fastest time, you can't blame a single member for that :P)

How would you know there wasn't a reason? .If a person is rude to me i won't like their posts even if i agree with what they may say sometimes. I like most people here  but once in awhile there's always an asshole I rather not associate with in any matter even if they say something I agree with xD

Well then that means dev has a grudge against a lot of people... isn't that worse?

I'm not trying to be accusatory or anything here, this is an objective observation of mine, something I think DC might be referencing here

How would you know that there is no reasoning behind why I like one person's thing and not the other? Have you ever asked me about it? Has it ever occured to you I might not like the person she's agreeing with. I don't think it's a secret because a few people wanted to start crap I have a lot of enemies on here. And yet again here it is. Do I really have to go down the list of posts I've liked of hers and explain my reasons for liking it.Yet because a few people spent their time worrying about what I do I have to explain myself.

I don't see a problem at all.  People should be allowed to like what they want.

I don't give Likes on here very often, but when I do, it's because I actually mean it. (I really didn't mean for that to turn into something you'd read on a meme)

Funny thing is right after I read this I got the message that you liked one of my posts.  I don't give out many likes either.  I mostly give them when people make me laugh.

I don't have a problem with that. It's fine at all.

solution: remove likes and everyone who whines about it can suck it

its a win win because you get to be rid of all the annoying people

If they truly do agree, than it isn't a problem for me. Anyone can find someone they know who likes KH and gets them to get on this site. As long as they aren't just using they as a 'like' source then I don't care

Honestly, I've never once reached the quota before (I'm not very active on here xD  That probably explains it lol).  When I like something, it's because I can agree with what the person is saying or I found what they said amusing.  I have never found myself liking a post just because of a particular person posting it, or not liking it for the same reason.  Of course, I can't say that my situation is the same as everyone else.

In terms of the point of this thread, I really see no problem with it.  Likes are nice, but they shouldn't define a person.  If you become obsessed with likes, you become obsessed over what people think of you.  There's nothing wrong with wanting people to have a good opinion about you, but you can't let that control you.  (Wow, I just let things get way too serious o.o Quick, someone get a tap dancing walrus with a top hat and monocle)

For the sake of the discussion, pretend that the quota wasn't limiting, because they actually gave away 2000+ likes (over a period of time, say, 8 months).

Considering the number of members on the site and the number likely to read a particular thread, I think that it's very little to worry about as if a post consist of a good point/argument/opinion/suggestion then it will generate likes anyway and that 1 like by Member B will make a small percentage of likes on a particular post/thread. It's likely more an issue if members decide to boycott liking posts by a particular member, but again the same conditions apply and the likes of those members also make up a small percentage of potential likes. Endgame: the number of members involved in the agreement to like/not like a particular member's post/thread is greatly outweighed by those not involved - therefore there is no real issue.

Also, as there is a quota, that percentage is likely to remain low and, if the posts are irrelevant/lack decent content, the number of likes from other members will be significantly low to the point that their status will average out. Of course, this is merely my own opinion.

Just for the record. If I am in a debate with Dev and/or Lea and they agree with me they like my posts too....

I like it when people do this to show support. I like it even more when people locked in a debate show humility/maturity and like the posts of the person who disagrees with their own views when they make a valid point (hatok and Flaming Lea come to mind! you two are such strong-minded people, but bloody brilliant! ;))

This is why we need the quota. If there was no quota people could go around liking every post a friend of theirs had made.

I don't like people going around liking the posts their friends make like that. I seriously doubt someone can like 2,000 odd posts from one person and be all genuine.

My points are backing up the need for the quota.

It's funny because you can't ignore the quota as it exists in the current regime. It's funny that the quota thing wasn't added until people used it to poke holes in the logic Dchuich presented us. The fact remains the quota system is currently in place, and prevents the abusive spam of likes.

Edit: Speaking I recall a couple threads in which you yourself have suggested to others to like certain members posts. In fact you made a thread asking everyone to like Reversal's stuff. I didn't see anyone else complaining it was a coordinated abuse of the system.

Whether you were joking or not people actually went and made a conscious descion to like Reversal's posts. Wether it was because they genuinely liked what Reversal had to say or because you suggested it. Regardless the reason they made a choice on how to spend their quota. Which at the end of the day is within their right.

My god everyone, just firetrucking remove the like system. I'm tired of seeing this shit. Too many people getting butthurt. Yep. I said it.

Currently, you're restricted to giving out (I think) 20 likes per day. Since so many of you are requesting it, let's seriously discuss the idea of removing this quota.

Cons

- Likes are now more worthless and less meaningful, as some people will spam likes without a care in the world for post quality

Ignore the quota and pretend that this could actually happen.

You seem to be missing the point. The quota is there. You've even said before that the reasons it's there. You're arguing with yourself.

1. They're likes. A firetrucking number for god's sake. It's not like you get 1,000 dollars for having X number of likes. You get nothing.

2. It's a person's likes. They can do as they wish with them. You can't really stop that. No one gives likes out just because. In the case of Lea and Dev they happen to agree on a lot of things. Is that really wrong? Before you answer let me tell you the correct answer. No. There is nothing wrong with it at all.

Thank you and Goodnight.

I honestly agree. Reputation systems have been a an issue a lot throughout KH13.com's history.

Everyone takes things to seriously on here.

There are way too many awesome things to like here besides the 'I'm your friend so I'll like your post no matter how pointless it is wee!'

On some plane, the quota is a must, but me speaking, I'm not a big fan of it tbh.

And besides

My god everyone, just firetrucking remove the like system. I'm tired of seeing this shit. Too many people getting butthurt. Yep. I said it.

Cricket said the rest for me.

Quite frankly that seems to be the only way people will stop crying about who has more likes then the other person. That's what the issue is when comes down to it, there is too much emphasis on being popular(which takes form in various ways) on this site. First it was the post count, then it was the likes, and when none of those apply it's how long you've been a member here. The truth is this thread isn't about the fairness of the like system. It's about whether or not someone should be punished for having more likes then others because others make it into something more heinous then it really is. It's rich considering that Dchuich himself has always maintained it's for shits, and giggles yet even he makes this an issue. Call me what you will (I apologize in advance if I come off rude) but I'm just calling this what it really is.
