Western Games Are Becoming Popular Now

Posted

You know, ever since the PS3 came out, Western games have become a lot more popular. I mean you see more Western games getting announced/launched in stores than you see Japanese games these days. I don't have a problem with it or anything it's just that it seems that Japanese games aren't nearly as popular as they were back when the NES/SNES, Sega consoles, N64, PS1, PS2, and NGC were around. And like game developers have stated: Japanese games are beginning to lose its edge and are becoming less popular these days (mainly in NA and Europe). Now I know there are people who love JRPG's and favor them over Western games but it feels like JRPG's are starting to become overshadowed (and sometimes completely ignored) in Western territories. Nowadays Western games are starting to become all the rage. Though that is possibly because most Americans/Europeans love games from their culture/territory than Japanese games. Though I am aware that there are people who simply love JPN games and favor them more.

What are your thoughts about this?

I kinda dislike the fact that a lot of games from japan are either RPG's or Hack N' Slash (almost every anime game). Repetitive gameplay is not fun xD But hey, they still make great games, but so many people play nothing but shooters or IOS games so they get overlooked by most casual gamers.

The Japanese game industry has had some trouble. I think that Western audiences have developed a little more since the SNES heyday, and as a result our tastes have changed. I think that Japanese developers have had trouble adjusting to the online era and innovating their established franchises in ways that can reach Western audiences (see Final Fantasy).

On the other hand, there have been some pretty fascinating and amazing titles from Japanese studios. Persona 4 Golden, Catherine, Dark/Demon's Souls, and Tokyo Jungle all gripped our attention and were praised in some fashion. Ni No Kuni reportedly breathes new life into the JRPG genre while making it seem fresh again. Japanese games, while less prevalent than they once were, have not entirely lost their quality.

I think that part of the reason why it seems like JRPGs have diminished in the public eye is because there simply weren't very many good Western games at the time, meaning that Japan's best was also playing against a less crowded field. Both the East and the West make great, innovative games, it's just that the Western developers have learned to better make games that appeal to the wider majority of their home audiences.

That said, I'm a Westerner posting on a Kingdom Hearts forum, which is something I've never done for any other series. Take that as you will, haha.

What are these Western games you speak of?

I think western and Japanese are just as popular like ps3 is western and xbox is more Japanese I guess owo Im not really paying attention to who made what so Im not sure on that :3

They lost their edge like 5-8 years ago.

Western studio's seem to be faster and have more fresher ideas. There's more of focus on downloadable titles in the west as well which is where alot of fresh ideas come from but this could be the original games from japan don't make it out.

in proff of the things people are saying its not that there not as popular japs just dont care to make the game international they have a shit load only for ps3 but where never going to get that

It depends.I prefer Japanese RPGs and so on, however, my favorite game (series) is Assassin's Creed.

I don't know if I just play the wrong J-games, but it feels like the Western Games are much darker. And I love these kind of stories... but I find RE lame.Man, I must sound like some split personality case, lol.

I like both, but it is true, I have felt the same way.

Why do people treat everything like a mutual choice. I like Assasin's Creed, I like Final Fantasy. I like Zelda, I like Mass Effect

You don't have to choose or even preer one

because it's stupid to categorize your likes by GEOGRAPHY

There are more people in America and Europe so therefore it's only logical that Western Games will make up the majority of the titles at some point.

Video games caught on quite quickly in Japan, but it is a much slower climb here. In America and Europe there was an initial negative stigma to video games. Back in the retro era the gamer stereotype was either "little kid" or  "basement dwelling loser with no job or love life". That hardly applies anymore (it really didn't to begin with,  There still is negative stigma associated with video games (According to the news, violent video games turn you into a mass murderer) .

However virtually everyone plays video games in some form. Be it on their phone, a console, or a computer. Since America and Europe have larger populations than Japan it's only natural that eventually more western games pop up.

Personally, I like both but I find myself leaning more towards western titles lately. That's probably because I do most of my gaming these days on my PC and my Xbox 360, which see a lot fewer Japanese titles than the Wii/Wii U and Playstation 3 but I grew up on the Japanese games though since when I was younger I played a lot of Playstation 2, N64 and Wii when it first came out.

I'm kinda disappointed by the lack of variety 'round the market in general nowadays.
