So I've been cooped up in the house for the month of May, and I've become increasingly irritable and grumpy. So, in an effort to maintain a positive point of view, for the month of June, I'm going to try and post one thing that i like per day in this thread.
1. Monopoly
I love this game. I got my first edition when I was about ten, and I still have it. And when I say Monopoly, I mean the real Monopoly, not one of the endless pop-culture spinoffs. I know all the properties like the back of my hand (though I will occasionally screw up the order in which they go), and for a while, I knew how much each one cost.
Why do I like it so much? One of the big things is that I love the haggling and dealing. I like it when a game with an otherwise linear structure gives the opportunity for players to branch out and use their own skills to try and win. Sure, you could just roll the dice and let the chips fall where they might, but I like to try and make deals with other players, which opens up a whole new mechanic: depending on who you're playing with, you approach each person differently, and you have to try and figure out the best way to get them to give you what you want. And if you don't do it right, you might get trapped yourself. It just keeps you on your toes the whole time.
Also, believe it or not, there is a great deal of strategy involved in Monopoly. Most people just buy every piece of property they land on without a second thought, but in fact, this is one of the worst things you can do. Don't blow your money on Atlantic when one person owns Ventnor and another owns Marvin Gardens: with the place split three ways, you'll never be able to make a deal with two other people to try and get your hands on the Monopoly. But, if only one person owns Marvin Gardens and Ventnor, then you would be wise to buy Atlantic, because not only do you block them from having a Monopoly, but you now have the sole piece of the puzzle they're looking for, and they are going to be far more inclined to deal with you in the future, probably with you dictating terms.
And as far as the length of the the games go, well, I really like that too. A good game of Monopoly can take forever, but that's not a bad thing. If you're with a good group of friends, it's an excuse to hang out and mingle. It gives you something you can linger over and relax with while still having fun.
