We could have another game with Connor using William inside of the Animus, but I don't think I'd make it a trilogy. We have Liberation in the same timeline (haven't played it yet, though). For obvious (and leaving-unmentioned) reasons, we won't be seeing Desmond in the next game, but given the layout in AC3, I'm thinking we'll be seeing more current world action rather than being trapped in the Animus for the entire game.

 

I figured we'd have Connor coming up in the next game for a few reasons. My biggest was because it was said earlier that Washington came into contact with an Apple, an event that was never explained in any kind of detail (they even wen through the trouble of recounting that fact in AC3), not to mention the little conflicts that followed the Revolution. Hell, we could even have Connor in the War of 1812, although we'd have another Senior Assassin.

 

In the end, looking forward to the next title... and still have to play Liberation.

It all started with Assassin's Creed on the 360 and PS3, a new IP from Ubisoft Montreal. After incredible hype, it was released and everyone gathered together and cried out, "Meh." Okay, the first one wasn't great. But then ACII came along and blew everyone's minds with how incredible it was, how much it polished everything while pulling out what AC did right. Now, after 4 games on home consoles and several spinoffs on the handhelds, the first story arc of AC is coming to a close with Assassin's Creed III. After so much hype has built over the years, can it deliver a satisfying conclusion to this saga? I've beaten it, and here's my review.

 

Keep in mind that this is MY review. Your opinion may very well differ from mine.

 

Also, fair warning, this will contain mild spoilers from earlier games in the series. Keep that in mind as well.

 

Story

Okay... have a lot to go through...

 

So you play as Desmond Miles (voiced by Nolan North), a bartender who comes from a bloodline of Assassin's, men and women who fight for freedom against the Templars, who seek to achieve world peace through control and the destruction of free will. Desmond is kidnapped by a company known as Abstergo Industries, a front for the modern day Templars, and put into a machine called the Animus, a machine that lets one relive the lives of their ancestors, so that the Templars can locate the Pieces of Eden, ancient bits of technology left behind by a powerful race that came before humans, and achieve the power to control everything. After living through the memories of Altair during the Crusades, Desmond breaks out of Abstergo and enters the Animus once again to get himself trained in how to be a true Assassin. He does this by reliving the memories of Ezio, an italian Assassin who existed during the Italian Renaissance. Now, after so much training and searching, Desmond is entering the Animus one last time, reliving the memories of Native American Assassin Connor during the American Revolution, so that he can find a key to opening an ancient door to find a device that can stop the world from ending on December 21st, 2012.

 

You get all that?

 

So yeah, needless to say, the story is somewhat convoluted, and despite a small intro before the game to get people caught up, you REALLY need to have played the other home console games to get what's going on. As for the story itself, it's pretty darn good. We spend more time with Desmond than ever before, which was needed since this is his final game in the series, and we get to finally see him grow into an Assassin. Connor's story manages to avoid feeling like a rehash of the stories of Altair and Ezio, bringing his own unique character and growth to the story, and while I feel that Ezio was still the best out of the main characters in the series, Connor is a strong addition to the bloodline of Assassins.

 

Sometimes the story lacks the focus that Ezio's story through ACII to Revelations had, but for the most part, Connor's story is easy to follow, and begins to get intense as the game goes on. Towards the end of his story arc, things come to a head in a very intense, gripping, and thrilling climax that lasts for about an hour's worth of missions. Connor's story, being introduced and closed in the same game unlike Altair and Ezio, is resolved and feels like it did its part. And when we see the ending to Desmond's story... oh boy, it's disappointing. The game just stops. There is very little explaination, no choice in what we can do given that options are provided to the character, and after the final action is made, the game just stops, and the credits roll. Overall, despite being strong on the way through, the story really trips up at the very end, where it needed to be the strongest.

 

Gameplay

Of course, what matters most in a game is NOT its story, but its gameplay. And Assassin's Creed III, much like ACII did, has rebuilt almost the entire structure of gameplay from the ground up. The biggest complaint people had about Brotherhood and Revelations was the lack of innovation, that they were too similar to ACII. That certainly isn't an issue here, as damn near everything has been changed about how you play, from new controls to, new animations, to new fighting systems, to new sidequests. If you want a fresh new experience, you will definitely find it in ACIII. Combat is vastly improved, rewarding players for keeping on their toes and reacting to whatever the situation may throw at them. More mechanics are added, including tall grass and corner hiding, that makes these stealthy Assassins feel more stealthy than ever before. Everything is polished up here to deliver the best possible experience.

 

There is a LOT to do in this game, believe me. Liberating sections of Boston and New York from Templar control, building your own group of Assassin's, building up your home to give yourself supplies and trade with merchants to improve your funds, search underground systems, find pages to create new inventions and weapons, search for treasure, and that's just scratching the surface. ACIII also includes naval missions, where you take control of your own ship and explore and fight on the seas. This is easily one of the best boating sims I've ever played, and despite not being featured prominantly in the main story, it provided some of the highlights of the game. The multiplayer feature from Brotherhood and Revelations makes a return, and is just as fun as it was before.

 

Presentation

One term I used to describe this game earlier is "polished." The gameplay is refined, the visuals are refined, and it runs at a steady framerate even with hundreds of characters on screen at once. So this is why I was so surprised at how BUGGY this game is. I'd sink into the ground on occasion, rifles would float in the air, guards would start attacking me despite having done nothing to provoke any action against me. The game is strong in the graphics department, but stuff like that really does detract from the experience. The game has a strong soundtrack as per usual with the AC franchise, which has some of the most underrated and underappreciated music in gaming today in my opinion.

 

Verdict

So in the end, I though Assassin's Creed III was:

 

Great!!

The gameplay is polished and refined for the better, it is the strongest in the series in terms of visuals, it has a great soundtrack, there is a lot to do, and it introduces and closed the newest Assassin's story with great skill. However, it is also surprisingly buggy, its story is pretty unneededly complicated, and the end of Desmond's story is, for lack of a better word, very disappointing. It's still an incredibly fun game and definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of AC, but in my mind, ACII is still the game to beat. Maybe in a few years, ACIV will be able to accomplish that.

Yeah, Connor could be like the new Achilles or it could be his son and have a Haytham like sequence with Connor explaining who the mother was. Interesting idea.

This new DLC looks pretty interesting indeed. I hope we get some new ways to kill/take out targets rather than doing the things old, same way

It goes for half an hour so sorry I cant watch it, but AC3 was a lot different I can admit but it wasnt completely dissapointing, I did enjoy myself and Im I sure I will like AC4 aswell.
