Posted September 24, 201312 yr Sooooo.......am I the only one who thinks that kairi will go from a damsel in distress to a Mary Sue in kh3?
September 24, 201312 yr Author Uh...what's a Mary Sue?Someone (mostly a girl) who's strong but needs to be protected at all times
September 25, 201312 yr Uh...what's a Mary Sue? A character (usually female, as others have mentioned) who are well-liked by pretty much every important character in the plot even if they don't know them well and have very few characters flaws, coming off as a little TOO perfect. A Mary-Sue also tends to have a very unoriginal personality, falling into common character archetypes.

September 25, 201312 yr I feel like she shouldn't be as important as she is. I liked her role in KH1 and COM but in 2 and on I feel like she's just going rover and doing random stuff
September 25, 201312 yr Hm oh I was wrong?I thought... Nvm What you said can apply as well. But I think that may be closer to a Damsel in Distress than a Mary Sue.That's just my opinion, of course.
September 25, 201312 yr Javelin, pls Uh...what's a Mary Sue? Sooooo.......am I the only one who thinks that kairi will go from a damsel in distress to a Mary Sue in kh3? I don't think you know what a "Mary Sue" is... Mary Sue: A general derogatory term that's usually used to insult a character or an OC. I know what it means for an OC, but for an established character it's sorta different. General Mary Sue: Too good, perfect in every way, some sort of tragic backstory, unusually talented in everything he/she does, basically an author self-insert character into a universe for personal wish fulfillment. But realistically, it's used to describe OCs. I don't think it applies to canon characters... A Mary-Sue also tends to have a very unoriginal personality, falling into common character archetypes. This applies to Fanfic OCs... I can go into detail if needed. And no. Kairi will not become a "mary sue." Don't use the term unless you know what that means.
September 25, 201312 yr Kairi was really never an important character...she was mostly a plot-device at best I mean look at her in KH1...she's barely in it...she's just used for the Princesses of Heart Plot and you hardly ever interact with her nor does she play a big part Kairi won't be a Mary Sue...she would have to be good at everything and virtually have no flaws to be a Mary Sue Belle from BATB would be a perfect example of a Mary Sue Kairi on the other hand has shown fear, sadness, happiness etc. Though she really has been for the most part like a Side-Character at best Nobody hates her cuz no-one really cares about her(besides Sora,Riku and some of the disney characters)
September 25, 201312 yr I don't think it applies to canon characters... I realize that the term was initially only used to describe OCs in fanfiction. But you can't deny that over time the term has broadened. This Kingdom Hearts forum should be proof.I've lost count of how many KH fans I've seen declare Xion to be a Mary Sue.Right now, at this given time, Mary Sues are being applied to both OCs and canon characters.I understand what you're trying to say, but words don't have concrete meanings. They're shaped by how people use them. So I must respectfully disagree. I believe the term Mary Sue can be applied to canon characters. Edited September 25, 201312 yr by KaytOfTheBlackCoats
September 25, 201312 yr I hate Kairi. Until she actually does something useful, I'll hate her forever.

September 25, 201312 yr SSShhhhh! She's not a Mary Sue, all of you people are just jelous! (Dont even try to take that seriously, Im just playing around.) In the name of Javelin, I shall defend her. But even so, in the name of Kairi and me, I also defend her. Kairi was too an important character! Shes best friend of Riku andbest friend and love of Sora (sadly *cries*), and she plays a role in their lives so therefore plays a role in the games. I mean she gives the story depth! I think I made the point clear I wasnt thrilled when she got a keyblade, but I dont hate the idea either. As long as she doesnt become super special awesome at the keyblade instantly, then im fine. Shes not a mary sue, because that would mean shes an ordinary character (and shes not because shes confirmed a PoH, she has a pure heart and is true to it), she would have to be really awesome just like Riku and Sora or even better with the keyblade (she seemed to have trouble with it in KH2), she would have been able to escape Axel but she got kidnapped eventually, and she would have been like immune completely to darkness or something (but shes not because in KH1 she still got her heart stolen). I really hope they dont MAKE her into a Mary Sue in KH3, but so far she isnt one and unless all of a sudden she becomes a keyblade master by the end of 3, then shes not.

They're shaped by how people use them. So I must respectfully disagree. I believe the term Mary Sue can be applied to canon characters. Canon characters can be Mary-Sues. All characters can be Mary-Sues. Every character in every canon starts as an OC to someone. Developers have flaws. Writers have flaws. Writers can write weak characters and they do so often. Might I point in the direction of Bella Swan or Eragon if I need proof. But as for Kairi being a sue, it's a bit of a stretch. Sure she does seem to get a few freebies once and a while, perhaps just happening to be a keyblade weilder was a bit of a stretch, but if the character does not actively do anything to derail the plot it's hard to really say they qualify as a sue. Perhaps in they eyes of the viewer they might become the Scrappy or the Wesley, but Mary Sues have the distinction of activly negatively influencing the work as a whole. Personally I don't see her as a bad character at all. She's not particularly memorable or strong, but she has a role in the plot that she serves well. She furthers the plot and doesn't drag the narrative back, and that's about all one can ask for in a character. Remember, Bad character =/= character you don't like.
September 25, 201312 yr Sooooo.......am I the only one who thinks that kairi will go from a damsel in distress to a Mary Sue in kh3? Wasn't kinda already a Mary Sue in KH II? Namine's rescuing her seemed awful conveniant...
September 25, 201312 yr I hate Kairi. Until she actually does something useful, I'll hate her forever. She's not gonna do anything useful...forget it...Nomura and Co obviously never knew what to do with her they just put her there to meet the trio quota Anyways don't see a reason to hate Kairi...she's not offensive or anything,I'm just MEH about her
September 27, 201312 yr I hate Kairi. Until she actually does something useful, I'll hate her forever. She's training to become a Keyblade Master to take down Xehanort, so I'd think that's doing something pretty darn useful if you ask me.

You obviously never take the time to actually learn anything about it. Kairi is training to become a Keyblade Master to fight alongside Sora and Riku and help take down Xehanort. That's pretty DAMN useful.

You, and everyone else who doesn't actually know the story. She's training to use the Keyblade and she's going to be one of the 7 lights. I know it's not "confirmed" yet. But they basically did confirm it. Either way, she's going to be in the action with a Keyblade. That's all that counts anyways.

You mean like how when she in KH2 said "This time I'll FIGHT" and then she kills like 2 Heartless? Sorry but Nomura clearly never thought Kairi through Even Hashimoto said that KH3 will be focusing about Sora and Riku's Friendship...completely neglecting Kairi
