Well Looks Like Sony's Abandoning The Vita

Posted

“Currently, there are no first party titles that are in development for the PlayStation Vita,” says Ito. “Third party companies are working hard on the PlayStation Vita, so we here at SCE have strategized to focus on our new platform of PlayStation 4"

Well, it's official guys. Sony is offically abandoning the Vita. Which is really sad actually, because the Vita has amazing hardware and it had tons of potential to be even better than the 3DS. I am truly dissapointed at Sony for not giving their own handheld console good support.

Well, you can't say it was successful (actually, I'm not even sure if I know anyone who owns a PS Vita).

I can't believe people are reporting this. We've known this for months. Months. Shu confirmed it himself.

As somebody that owns a Playstation VIta, I myself will say that, while I absolutely love the system, the handheld has had a VERY strong third-party support compared to actual Sony games. Though I do believe that the failure of the Vita is majorly in part to the lack of very good games early on in its release. There were very few really good games on the Vita. And while that definitely picked up over time, especially with Tearaway, a console does its absolute best with early establishing. If it doesn't do well at launch, it's doomed to be a system that not many people will ever own unless it gets some major support, which the Vita isn't getting. That's also probably why the Wii U is doing somewhat better, as well as why the 3DS recovered from a very devastating failure at release until the 3DS XL came out. So basically, unless some big system-seller is released for the Vita, it'll probably fade out. Again, I love my Vita, but I doubt that there'll be something to be done to save it, unless some big game is planned for it. And as far as I know, that isn't the case.

Not everyone keeps up to the minute or even day with this stuff. We do have lives outside of this and other things to do. Even I did not know until now.

This makes me glad in a way that I decided to get a New 3ds instead of a PS Vita. But I know there were a few good games on the Vita so that's too bad that they are abandoning it.

There's nothing wrong with reminding people, even if it is obvious to yourself.

On topic: This is sad news indeed, considering the PS Vita's potential, which still remains untapped and underutilized. It really is all because of its weak launch and Sony's failure to support the system as much as they should have done.

It's such a shame too, when I look at its library of pretty cool games...and yet I have seen only one person who owns a PS Vita in person. The only other guy I haven't met in person who owns one is AlphaOmegaSin.

Wasn't that said a couple months ago?I love my VIta, but looks like at this point the last games I'll get for it is Shantae and Freedom Wars.

You can't say "officially" just because they're only having 3rd party titles lined up for it right now. It's still being used for a huge amount of Sony's games.

I freaking love my Vita, seriously, what an amazing piece of hardware that truly was ahead of its time...

It was only a matter of time before it happened. Not surprised.

Yeah... indies and PSP ports.

Square Enix didn't even put Type-0 on it.

Kingdom Hearts could save it. BBS 0.2.

No, you're missing the point. These journalists are reporting this as news. In other words, they had no clue. In other words, they don't really care about Vita themselves despite it being their job.

It's not coming to Vita.

Yeah, it has some pretty good titles in its library. My only gripe with the system is that it has expensive memory cards. I really don't understand what Sony was thinking with that. Pretty that really turned some people off on buying a Vita. But other than that, it's a great system. Just wish it had more support.

I know that is why I said could. It may not be a big game like BBS anyway.

Wierd. At least I never bought a Vita because they never made a Kingdom Hearts for it. The only reason I own a PSP is 'cause of BBS. And I bought a 3DS day one 'cause I heard they were making DDD... And a Paper Mario... But that one was a huge disappointment.

That Smash Bros though...

I love my PS Vita to death but I have two big gripes with it:

1Lack of first party titles, and by that I mean stuff from Sony not from 3rd parties

2THE EXPENSIVE MEMORY CARDS.....seriously that's the biggest reason I couldn't purchase a Vita until the end of 2014,they're really freakin expensive and the default one that comes with the system can barely store that much

Those memory cards seemed like hell to buy... Luckily I got mine second hand with an 8GB one.

And lack of of first party also can equate to lack of AAA third party, which the Vita unfortunately has.

With a terrible game library, a memory card that isn't industry standard and terrible launch and advertising it's no surprise that the Vita is a failure. If they had at least used proper memory cards like the 3DS did and have high selling game series as launch titles it would have done so much better. Heck, the Vita did so bad, I forgot it even existed.

As expected to be honest. It just never hit the ground running. If you don't like niche Japanese games or indies you can get elsewhere then the system is pointless. I like my Vita, but not more than my 3DS. I really cannot see Sony making a successor to it any time soon.

It's a sad thing when the first thing that comes to mind about the Vita for me is this, "The PlayStation Vita Is Set To Succeed" article. Comedy gold.

IGN never seem to know what they are talking about. To say that the 3DS isn't a concern for the Vita's sales is really cocky. Sure, the 3DS was expensive and didn't have decent launch titles, but it's edge was it's backwards compatibility, which the Vita sadly lacked. If Sony included backwards compatibility, customers would have been able to upgrade without worry. That would have heavily enhanced the Vita's game library as well.

While the article is on IGN I blame the fanboyism of Colin Moriarty more than the site. His article wreaks of arrogance. You are right, the 3DS was a mess in its first year, but given the titles we knew of, or expected, that were coming out for the system (KH3D & Smash Bros for example were announced before the system came out) it's hard to see why it was destined to fail against the Vita.

I'm not sure even backwards compatibility would've saved the Vita to be honest. UMDs were a major flop and even the ability to download retail PSP games is hindered by a title not having a download version or the expensive memory cards Sony insisted the Vita have. Although this news of Sony not developing any Vita games isn't really that much of a shock. Did Sony even support the PSP that much? I'm struggling to even think of many games that Sony had a large input in outside of stuff like God of War, LittleBig Planet and maybe Patapon or something. The Vita is in the same position as the PSP in that it thought being more powerful than its Nintendo counterpart would mean it would succeed. Sony thought that more people would buy a Vita because the 3DS is a toy and nobody would want to be seen in public with one. So really they shot themselves in the foot to begin with. Nintendo know the handheld business better than anyone and Sony have tried and failed twice to beat them.

I do like my Vita, but I only have 3 1st party titles on the thing and games I was interested in like Gravity Rush or Tearaway are also on PS4. Sony abandoning the Vita and taking the system sellers away with it is what really is killing the Vita, but ah well.

Colin Moriarty loves his Vita.

My best friend/soul brother Jonathan talked to me about this, and we were both discussing about said subject!  I find it baffling that out of all the consoles Sony's released, the Vita has practically had the shortest life cycle on the market!  I'm not even kidding!  The original PSP lasted quite a long time before dying out! :O But, if the Vita wasn't working well business-wise, then I could understand why Sony decided to pull the plug.

But still, what a short life the Vita had! O.O
