Square Enix officially announces Kingdom Hearts III

Today at 6PM PST, Sony held its E3 2013 press conference. Here, Sony showed off the PlayStation 4. Kingdom Hearts III was officially announced. Series director Tetsuya Nomura appeared via a video and showed a short, beta trailer for Kingdom Hearts III which is "now in development" for the PlayStation 4 (Update: and Xbox One). Details about release date are currently unknown.

The trailer starts by showing all of the previous Kingdom Hearts titles to date. Next, Sora is shown on Destiny Islands finding Master Eraqus' Keyblade. The Kingdom Hearts III game logo is shown. Lastly, Sora is shown in Twilight Town fighting a wave/storm of Shadow Heartless. Donald and Goofy are party members.

Update 1: IGN have uploaded a summary video for the Kingdom Hearts III announcement. In this, they reveal that "according to Tetsuya Nomura, the game began development in 2010, after the release of Birth by Sleep". This is interesting news, as it means development was started up to 3 years ago!

Update 2: mbdamiani and Nova_Crystallis from Twitter have shared photos of a Kingdom Hearts III poster at E3 2013. This poster is from Square Enix's private conference, "Square Enix: The Future", which is about to go underway. It is likely that this event could reveal more details about Kingdom Hearts III, so stay tuned. The poster can be seen below. We will update you on details from this conference live, here.

In my half century of life, video game wise......this is the BEST E3 EVER!

 

Knew Nomura would go back to the traditional gameplay.

Everything I need is right here...A reason to buy a PS4, an announcement I've been expecting for a long time and BEAUTIFUL GRAPHICS!  I MEAN I ALWAYS WANTED THE KH GRAPHICS TO BE BETTER BUT I ALSO WANTED THEM TO STAY CARTOON-LIKE! I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS POSSIBLE BUT...HERE IT IS! THIS IS JUST PERFECT!

    The trailer was so intensive. Sora looks amazing. The clarity of his face and I was even more excited that they showed a small gameplay. That was a very nice cherry ontop of an unexpected ice cream. 

     

    But...ah, now I'm at a predicament on whether to get a PS3 or wait for the PS4...

     

    I'm a little surprise because I thought they would do it for the PS3 so that all the Kingdom Hearts games would be on the same console. I guess not.

    Maybe... just maybe they'll make the Remix available for PS4? A mere speculation but I hope it'll be true.

    Fool. I would have liked it if they just announced it and not show us some game footage that looked really bad. It will hopefully get better.

    I REALLY hope they adjust the animation with this because what they showed is just terrible.The comands and what the story seems to be so far, that looks awesome!! Aqua might finally find her way out of darkness!!

    I am so excited, and GUESS WHAT? They're returning to the KH2 kind of gameplay with MAGIC AS A SUBMENU! NO MORE COMMANDS (hopefully)!!

    After all these years of the side games and this FF vs. XIII nonsense, for SE to finally announce KH3, "IT'S ABOUT F*CKING TIME!" is the understatement of the year. When I heard of this, I literally couldn't believe it.

    Throughout the conference on another stream, I kept saying "FINAL FANTASY VERSUS XIII! Kingdom Hearts 3! BELIEVE!!" but I wasn't actually being serious. Amazing that it actually happened though, so freakin excited that KH3 is finally in the works!

     

    I must say though, it looks pretty early in development. I think it's likely that the game won't launch until around 2015. Gives us plenty of time to save. :D
