Good news: got Dark Souls 2 DLC. Bad news: Died immediatly upon entering the Sunken Kingdom. So it begins again...

What's your opinion on AU fics? I've noticed the brunt of my KH plot bunnies (and in other fandoms as well) have been AUs of some sort, because I feel either a lot of canon elements have been unexplored or mishandled, or I'm just more curious to see how established canons fare in other contexts.
Dracozombie repliedAgreed, but some of my AU ideas are a little more esoteric than that. Say, I try making Roxas act more or less as he does in canon despite not being a Nobody. One idea involving him is a mystery where he's the new kid at Destiny Islands and people are disappearing/being kidnapped due to legends about Xehanort and the old keyblade wielders living there.
Dave repliedAh, I see. I still think it works. The more I think on it, the more I think AU boils down to character and whether they are at least very close to what they are originally, since every problem I can think of off the top of my head that I've had with AU in the past seems to be when the characters are made to be extremely OOC. But yeah, I think different settings and plot lines would be cool too.
Dracozombie repliedNot just characters, but also at least one core theme or element. It's starting to bore me how many high school AUs take literally EVERYTHING remotely interesting about the original setting except for the characters, who may or may not act in-character. The concept itself doesn't bother me at all, but after reading a gazillion I've realized most of them boil down to the same things (usually shipping).
