    Hmmm....well, I have two goldfish, and the only thing I think of that comes even close to them drowning is fish suffocation. (Yes, fish can suffocate) If there is no filter, or you absolutely never clean the tank, they can die from swimming in their own stale water. Ammonia, nitrates, and other factors can also contribute to this.
