With all these new technology systems taking a storm (ie--the Kindle, Nook, Tablets, etc.) how do you feel about kids tossing paper books out the window and hooking their hands on these new gadgets? In all honestly, are people actually READING on these things, or just playing Angry Birds? Do you feel it increases learning? What happened to sitting on something comfy and feeling the paper and the text on the touch of your fingers? I can't do that through a screen. Do you feel a screen and back light form some kind of disconnect from the book, or do you feel there is no change at all?

There is school by me where each student has an I-Pad. They've thrown out all the textbooks, and everything that they will need will be on their I-Pads. How do you feel about this?

Pros?

Cons?

When your iPad breaks, you're just screwed. Not to mention that nothing beats a good old-fashioned book.

And I can't burn an iPad for warmth to survive in the Alps.

I think kindles are a good idea. Sure I still say we have text books but thats because we can take notes. On a kindle you dont lose your page.

Nothing beats a good old fashion book. =w=

The only good things I can think of for I-pads and Kindles, etc, is that it doesn't kill trees......that's it. xD

Pros: Everything.

Cons: THERE ARE NONE :D

well also remember with using a kindle or ipad or etc u can have all your book with you at once as with paperback u have to carry all your books which will weigh u down

I have an iPad, and I love it. But most of the reading I do on it is for school. It's extremely convenient to be able to put dozens of PDF files on my iPad for assigned readings, and be able to take that with me pretty much anywhere, instead of printing the files out and wasting 50 sheets of paper on something I'm never going to read again, and that crowds the folders in my notebook. I have a collection of novels that are available for free on my iPad, too, but I've never read through any of them. I like to save my novel reading for the real, printed books. So, I think tablets can be advantageous for school, but I don't see a need, nor do I have much of a desire, to use them for leisure reading.

As for said tablets replacing real books, I really doubt it's going to happen during my lifetime, or at least while I'm still young, so I'm not terribly worried. That's for the later generations to deal with. :P

And with the school using iPads, I think it's actually a good idea, as long as the students are responsible. It certainly beats having to carry around a heavy backpack everywhere and screwing up your back and shoulders. Also, if we're talking EVERYTHING, like all textbooks and other readings and such, then students don't have five different things to keep track of--just the iPad. Plus, it saves trees! So those are the pros. The one con I can think of is that iPads are somewhat easy to lose and difficult to replace. So, once again, hopefully those are some responsible students!

It's a personal opinion: I just HATE Ipads and Kindles

My pretty paper books are better. There's nothing that can beat the feel of crisp pages between your finger and the familiar smell of old books. And I just love it when the spine of my book wears down from reading it so much.

It might be okay for school (I hate textbooks) and it does save trees, but when it comes to just reading anything else, I much refer having the book in my hand.

Also IPads and Kindles can break, what do you do when they do

Unless you're smart enough to back everything up, you're screwed basically.

I prefer having old school books.

At least books can take some beating if they fall on the floor or get tossed around.

I have a Kindle and I love it. Not only do I read my books on it, but I'll put game walkthroughs on it so I can have it with me while I'm playing xD God, I'm such a dork. But I still read from regular books. Mostly for school or rereading books I already own.

But then I sort of miss the day when books were handwritten on cloth. And scrolls will always be cool. And how about the days when they carved stories into stone? Those Egyptians knew how to write a book. But I sadly except that these kinds of books fade away with time.

Books gives a sense of things ancient. iPads and tablets give me a sense of the future. Books preserve tradition. Tablets help save trees. To be honest, I'm torn between the two. I like both.

well, kids may want to learn more since they've got a tablet infront of them and they do save paper, but it does cost alot of money and once it's broken, it takes alot of money to replace it

really, i don't care wheather i use a textbook or a tablet

I love books infinitely more than the e-Readers. However, I do wish schools would get rid of all text books in favor of e-Readers. I nearly broke my back carrying five text books in my book-bag the other day.

I prefer books. They don't need to be charged every 6-8 hours.

E-reader:

-Saves paper

-Cheaper books

-Technology advantage (Save page and such)

-Stats

-More portable

-Instant access to a library with infinite books

-Infinite supply of books to buy that come out right on time

-Can do things BESIDES books

Regular Book

-Bulky

-Expensive (Especially hardcover)

-Easy to lose page

-Easily damaged

-Decays rapidly over time

-Can be misprinted

-Uses a lot of paper and ink

-Limited supply

And mooooooooooore

Pros about actual books:

Books make you look classy.

You can throw them at people.

You can lose them and get another one.

You can bring one to Africa, and it'll never run out of battery.

Old people can read them.

Cons about actual books:

They're made of paper

Paper cuts I guess?

Pros about eReaders:

You can read them without light I guess?

Cons about eReaders:

They break. Easily.

If you bring one to Africa, you probably won't be able to charge it.

You don't get the same reaction when you throw them at people.

Thumbprints on the screen

iPad wannabees.

Old people can't use them, trust me.

If you lose/break it, your f*cked. :)

True story.

e-Ink your argument is invalid

I prefer paper books. I've read Breaking Dawn on our iPad before and... yeah. I think in general tangible books are better than anything electronic.

If we use it enough, maybe it will just become the norm. Sort of like writing pencil and paper in comparison to writing with a word processing software. I like books better though because walls of text get hard to read after a while of it on a screen.

Honestly I prefer an actual book over a Kindle, nook, or an iPad. It just isn't the same to me as having an actual copy of the book there and I gave my mom's nook a chance once and I just couldn't read the book I was reading on it so I went out and bought myself an actual copy. It just wasn't the same... =

As for school related, I also prefer dragging around a big old textbook. Yeah, an iPad or something sounds nice but textbooks are more lasting in a school environment and they can get beaten up more than an iPad or something ever could. Once an iPad breaks it's gone until it's fixed or replaced. Also I don't like it when my teachers make us use the online textbooks instead of an actual one. For dual credit bio our teacher only gave us passwords online and I couldn't stand reading the book on there... so I ended up having to go out and buy the textbook. :U

Screw the trees. I don't care if my descendants walk around with oxygen masks. Knowledge is power, gaining that knowledge is very important. There is nothing more universal, common, or reliable than a book. When you really need information, your tablet is nothing more than a glorified slate of glass.

Until we finally crack the battery enigma so we can store nearly unlimited power in extremely tiny cells, Books will still be favored among the masses.

i acctually think books are better than electric books. this continuenly evolving technology is making peoples lazy more and more year after year.

Books aren't universal, they rarely have more than one language. Music is universal. Also, we ARE pretty close to solving batteries, so there's that.

You can throw them at people.

This is why I hope books never fade out. Technology just can't do everything a sturdy book can.

By universal I was referring to how they can be found almost wherever there are people. Considering that tablets are pretty new, you'd have to do a little digging to find them. Let's not forget that in places with library's you can use books for free.

We're close but not close enough to see the massive technology leap that will turn humanity into a space faring race, unless some genius shows up and solves the enigma.

i wish that happened at my skool cuz i firetrucking got a book in english full of gum! ewww
