Wii U 'important for the world' says Nintendo

Recommended Posts

President Satoru Iwata says being first next-gen console with Wii U "not important at all," stresses pricing will be major factor at launch, not looking to compete on graphics with Xbox 720, PS4.

Nintendo will be the first out of the next generation console gate this holiday season with the Wii U, but the company doesn't care about being first, it cares about impacting the world.

"Being first in the next generation race is not important at all," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Gamasutra in an interview published today. "One of the reasons we believe this is the time for Nintendo to launch the Wii U is it's going to be important for the world."

Iwata defended his claim, saying second screens like an iPad or smartphone in the living room have become commonplace today, and the Wii U--specifically itsGamePad--will be an attractive opportunity for consumers.

Elsewhere in the interview, Iwata spoke to a question many gamers have about the Wii U: how much will it cost? Iwata did not provide an answer, but said Nintendo has learned from the launch of the 3DS, which got off to a slow start before Nintendo cut the system's price by a healthy margin.

"The pricing of Wii U is going to be one of the most important elements when it is going to be launched," Iwata said. "The environment is different. Wii U is going to be launching in a different environment than when the Wii was launched. Also, the involvement surrounding [mobile and social] businesses is different than several years ago."

Lastly, Iwata addressed next generation console competition from Microsoft and Sony. He said Nintendo does not care about attempting to match those consoles' power, and is instead focusing on differentiating the Wii U from these still unannounced systems.

"We have not changed our strategy. In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013," he said. "Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]."

sooo the WiiU is like an iPad for gamers?....gamers doesn't need a portable system with a bigger screen...we need good games or THE BEST GAMES so if the WiiU won't be getting any awesome games then it won't be to successful

--I know that the WiiU isn't just for gaming but isn't most of the people who buys consoles are gamers? so they really need to focus on creating games or making big gaming companies make good games =w=......but I'm not getting it since it's only a waste of money for me....unless KH3 will be released on the WiiU(which is highly unlikely)

...just like how I bought a 3DS for KH3D .__.

I only want the Wii-U for ZombiU and Watch_Dogs... and the new Scribblenaut game... and Super Smash Bros.

Other than that it's relatively useless. I really cant wait to see if the Wii-U price drops 100$ like the 3DS did. xD

I totally support this.

Why create a copy of another console but from Nintendo when you can create something different.

I hope the games that come out for this are going to be great, I don't know...but if TWEWY 2 was on it I would buy it.

I was going to buy it anyways, so many good games on it that I really like.

I don't even consider the Wii U to be next-gen. It's just catching up imo.

What you think changes nothing. It's still next gen. Because it takes place in the next generation of game consoles.

if there's one thing the Wii showed, it's that Nintendo doesn't need to catch up, they can continue to set trends.

Someone can say next-gen, but's up to me to decide what I think about consoles, not you. And I consider the Wii, at least the graphical capabilities to be behind a generation. Define generations anyways, then. New consoles 3 years apart?

A console generation, typically, is defined by consoles in competition with one another, which will, in all honestly, most likely be the Wii U v. Nextbox, v. PS3, but the PS3 will most likely be dropped halfway through for a new console when Sony realizes that people are more attracted to a shiny new product, over a superior old one.
