I have tried to make them stronger I have given them ability rings is there anyway to make them stronger?

Hook them up with Save the Queen and Save the King and then enable Knocksmash and Fantasia.

It depends on what abilities you have enabled for them . If you don't have the right ones they really don't do much .

Equip good items for Sora... Donald and Goofy die at the most important battles... Donald sometimes save you with Cure, but not regularly.

Isn't ability ring one that gives only 1AP point? Because if it is, there LOTS of better equipment in the game.

Also the characters you control are the only ones that are reliable... Party members always find a way to screw things up

If you want them to be really strong, grind for items and create a tonne of strength and magic boosters to max out their stats (Also throw in some AP boosters for abilities)

Even with all the good equipment, I'm pretty sure Donald is evil. He doesn't cure me when I need it, but rather waits until right after I cure myself or give myself a potion to "help" me. He's in cahoots with Xehanort. I know it.

I wouldn't worry too much about them, as mentioned they die when they would be most useful no matter what, especially if you're just playing the base version of the game.

 

I would go into the skills menu and make sure to decrease the frequency of the majority of their skills. (Save for maybe cure, thundaga and Knocksmash) They become significantly less useless.

lol I always quote that. Like seriously. It's implied that Keyblade Wielders are pretty much the most powerful beings in the Kingdom Hearts universe for starters. Donald and Goofy, in the grand scheme of things, are weaker characters regardless of actual game mechanics. That's just how they are perhaps they will train and get better in the future. Although, I thought they were pretty good in Kingdom Hearts 2; knocksmash was a killer.

I like them as supporting acts, but that's what they are...supports. They shouldn't be as strong as Sora or another keyblade bearer

Well, their only purpose is to stall the enemy until you heal yourself.

Actually, Goofy would kick a** on my party.

Donald however would die within five seconds of the battle and run out of MP in two...

Am I the only person who actually had helpful Goofy / Donald AI (for the most part; sometimes Donald refused to use black magic and heal, even with a full MP bar >>)?

They only exist to hog your items and use your potions.
