During the KH2 opening, before it becomes obvious that it's a data world. Before that, he's and average kid being burdened with the power of the keyblade. Thank you so much. Roxas is the character that made me fall in love with Kingdom Hearts. I feel like they butchered him, along with the essence that I felt was the Kingdom Hearts series.

Same mostly. I was fine with him being a Nobody though but they overloaded him a bit while "expaaaaaaaanding" his character in an attempt to make him more interesting.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Roxas is a very great character, yet they firetrucked it up by making him a part of Sora. I kept making new games all the firetrucking time just to play as him again,

Agreed, in start of KH2 I was annoyed that I didn't know what was happening, where is Sora? Who is this guy? But I grew to like Roxas very much and I wanted to play more as him and when I finally could have said that "I don't care about Sora anymore, I want to play as Roxas" they butchered Roxas with cruel fanfiction plot..

Roxas had the most potential in serie, but no. no. This is a moment when you can call Nomura a troll.

I liked him better when we found out his origins and ties to the Organization. During the prologue I was just thinking "Why am I spending all this time playing with this silly kid exploring the lame wonders of Twilight Town and doing silly jobs when I last saw Sora being put to sleep and Riku walking the Road to Dawn? Can we get back to that? What is the point of this?" I still think it's a waste of time but since I like Roxas now and know how he got there I tolerate it.

KH2 is the best of the series. Not only the stuff Hatok mentioned but also because it practically connects the entire franchise and Sora is actually bad-ass in this game!

I liked him in KH2, throughout the story (when you found out he was in the organization as well as the beginning where you get to play him). When days came out I lost interest and love (I favored him more than Sora at a point) in the character, if they went straight to KH3 without the side/bridge games (where we just saw Roxas in KH2) I would have easily wanted him to be a Light, now with his character I see no point. Before I would have thought he deserved to be a light, and now I would rather Lea than him.

This makes me wonder why people think Roxas became better in Days.

I agree. That would definitely make the game's story better imo.

Though I'm ignoring the people whining "Baww KH is just one big fanfic now gaiz and somethings only good if I say it is and roxas sux!!1" I do still have to agree that I prefer Roxas in KH2, just not for the reasons everyone says. I thought he was interesting because he's put in a (relatively and to our knowledge) mundane setting, which gives him subtle nuances of personality, the extent of which you don't see with any other characters except maybe the KH1 prologue at Destiny Islands. Since Roxas is in a more "normal" setting with normal people, his problems are normal and so he's not able to solve them and define his personality with grand, sweeping gestures like saving so-and-so world from destruction. Roxas isn't a hero and he isn't intended to be. His interactions with his friends and the other residents of Twilight Town, conflicting with people forcing him to accept his part of a bigger world he has no interest in, shows a normal boy we can relate to better than any other character in KH.

 

I don't see how Days subtracted from Roxas's character. Bitch all you want about Xion and maybe Axel, and bitch all you want about the plot's execution, but I appreciated this side of Roxas's character as well, just not to the extent of his KH2 role. I wanted to know how Roxas was during his time with the Organization, and I saw it. Was it what I expected? Certainly not, but I don't see how what was presented (Xion notwithstanding) was a bad idea. We see Roxas grow from a zombie, to someone naive and curious about the world around him, to someone who with the help of his friends notices there's something more to that world he hadn't realized, to someone willing to fight against the people he once mindlessly obeyed.

 

We don't see the same amount of personality nuances due to the aforementioned plot execution, but Days and KH2 show different sides to Roxas's character. Actually, I didn't get a true appreciation for his KH2 role until after I played Days. KH2 shows Roxas's "normal" personality that, sadly, was given little attention in Days. However, Days shows Roxas as someone hard-working and capable but doesn't think much of it, only doing it because people tell him to and he gets something out of it. When he decides to use his skills for his own benefit for a change, he first uses it to pull Xion's weight while she can't collect hearts, and was capable enough to fool Saix into thinking they're both doing their work. Then he whoops Saix's ass and runs away from the people who just wanted to use him or wouldn't tell him what he wanted to know. We see him gain the skills and independence he shows in KH2, where he doesn't take shit from anyone and uses it to stand up for himself and his friends. Even if I like his KH2 personality more, Days shows what it led up to, though not as executed as it could have been for various reasons.

 

Honestly, when people whine about how Roxas was portrayed in Days, the only thing I hear is "waah roxas's past isn't what i wanted it 2 b!!!1"

"You know, Mr. Sora, I've been thinking. This "Rosebud." Maybe it was something he lost? Mr. Roxas lost just about everything he ever had."

 

The part of Roxas that I love is that his is a pagentry of loss. Things just keep going from bad to worse for him the longer he lives. The reason why this worked so well in KHII was because they set him up as just an ordinary boy, and so we grow attached to his character, not his plot. Then, when the plot starts to unfold, the pity we feel for Roxas is genuine, because we've spent an hour of gameplay growing to identify and sympathize with him. The pathos is made even more paramount when Roxas proceeds to lose everything around him: the part where Pence, Hayner, and Olette run by him is the most heartbreaking part of the series. Worse still, there is nothing he can do about it: the world has conspired to condemn Roxas, and all he can do is break a computer in frustration, not able to save himself. Then, at the end of all things, he's forced to look his own mortality in the eye as he stares down the literal embodiment of his doom, Sora. His loss is absolute at that point, and he knows it.

Roxas is probably one of the best character's in Kingdom Hearts.

Sometimes I feel that he should have more Roxas than what we have. When I first played KH2, I was like who is this guy. Then when he merged with Sora, started to miss him. He just wanted a normal life. Then there was Days. It wasn't a bad game, but maybe it should have been a movie or a dual pack thing with Re:CoM in a theater mode like in the Re:MIX. It gave us more information about him though and Axel. It would have been better without Xion though. I like her, but she wasn't needed.

When I saw him in DDD, I was like what. Then the nobodies grow hearts and I was like Roxas might come back and Lea wants to see him and keep their promise. So now Roxas probably will come back as a plot twist and fanservice which I won't complain about. He deserves it.

Unfortunately, i never had that feeling... I started playing the series from KH2, only after it I played KH1... So you can imagine that after I did beat the first game, I already knew the plot around the second game, so i wasn't surprised...

But I like Roxas. I mean, I liked him in Days, his story was so sad and deep I kinda got attached to him, and in KH2 he always reminds me of a person that in somehow thrown into this really strange world, surronded by strange people, so in the end, I kinda get what you feel (a little)

You are full of win.

Just one correction: No matter how much you complain about whoever you're complaining about with the games and stuff, Nomura wrote the scripting for the story, drew the characters and still lead over the production of it during that whole time.  So basically, you're blaming people that had no real play in the script and characters. The games, the stories, the characters...all are approved by Nomura. 

 

So basically, you might as well blame Nomura and start expecting more of the "crap" you got in the recent titles to appear. 

I have something to say.

I sorta liked Roxas in Days, Not because of his character( it isn't really bad, but can get annoying due to his dumb question "what is love? is it power?"), i liked the story line but the reason i liked it was the gameplay, the way the organization run the missions and the way they organize recons and stuff, also The exciting unexplained holes in the game such as braig (xigbar) saw Xion as Ven at the moment she attacked him, and obviously Dualweild roxas.

But in KH2, Roxas surely made a better apperence fo' sure..

I hope KHIII will give us hotter topic to discuss...
