Video Games have too many tutorials

Featured Replies

Example: Mega Man X - The first level teaches you everything you will need to know in order to play the game. An enemy is coming at you, so the most obvious thing would be to jump over it. You encounter a mini boss, realizing that you cannot jump over said boss means there must be a way to attack. So what do you do? Press buttons until you find the attack button and continue your way through the game. After completing that first level, you now how the game works and plays and the rest is up to you.

This paragraph so much.

I dislike the long tutorial sequences. Or when you have a tutorial for something really simple that is in the games manual. If there's only a few throughout the game I don't really mind. It's just when they get really long or come very often.

Manuals are getting slimmer and slimmer and there's color in very few of them which makes them boring :(

I don't mind a tutorial here and there, it helps in teaching something that may me confusing. But yeah, long tutorial sequences suck x.x especially when you can't skip them >:OO

Maybe... too many tutorials have video games these days? Ever think of that.

Someone was watching Egoraptor.

Hahaha, I was playing Super Mario World and realized that it was just straight gameplay, and had nothing explain what to do. And then I watched sequealitis and was like "Holy jazz, he has REALLY good points."

I have never thought of that, but holy wow it blew my mind.

I agree but not all video games do. Some games have really stupid tutorials which are obvious things you can work out by yourself, but there are still a lot that don't, and have useful tutorials for a beginner player. If you think about it, if it is your first time playing a video game you wont really know what to do even stuff like press O to jump. But I also think you should at least be able to skip the tutorials if you are an advanced player.

I always used to skip them as fast as possible.  And then this guy happened.

After him I made a real effort to pay attention to which buttons I press when I skip through tutorials.

Monita in Nintendo Land needs to look at this. She never shuts up.

not as bad as any zelda helper person

...it was a terrible fate for anxious people T.T

The age of the video game industry is inversely proportionate to the amount of intelligence it thinks we have.  Go figure.

I don't really mind tutorials (even if they're not really necessary or are overly long).Unskippable tutorials, on the other hand...

Hope KH doesn't turn out that way.........

I don't agree, I really feel like there should be more tutorials. I'm currently playing Half Life 2 Episode Two, I have almost beat it and I still haven't been able to figure out how to shoot

you haven't pressed enough buttons yet.

you haven't pressed enough buttons yet.

I have tried everything, I'm not sure if I should try out mouse 1.

Not allllll games have long tutorials some you don't even have to take tutorials 83

It would be a bold move, maybe even catastrophic. I say go for it, and unlock the mystery of HL2's controls.

Yeah, I totally agree with you.  I like a good explanation if it's something difficult, but I mean seriously, teaching me how to use an item?!  And part of the problem is these tutorials last for HOURS sometimes.  I know some games I've played continue to tutor me for the first four hours of the game.  I remember the older games from the 90's didn't offer anywhere near that amount of guidance.  Heck, you'd be lucky if they explained anything at all.  I guess they think the newer gaming generation is built up of dummies?  Silly people.

The game manuel is already good enough.

For me it seems that the really complicated games where I wouldn't mind a tutorial either don't have one or have a really short one, and the games that are pretty straight forward have tutorials that last for like 9 hours.

I feel the best when tutorials are lengthy, but optional and sorted by category. This way you don't have to go through learning how to look up and down again just to learn how to do something more complicated.

I think the games with the best tutorials are the Halo games though. In a nutshell they are "Alright chief, look up. Now look down. Now walk here. Now go and- shit aliens are attacking again go handle that!"

Sega All Stars Racing ( the first one ) is really bad at this. It tells you what to do every race and usually it's the same thing and yes during the loading screen there is a "Sonic Says "( yes a Sonic Says,) giving you really dumb advice like we're morons like "press this button to start the car " !  Duurr !

I preferred the days when Sonic told you that touching was no good.  :(
