Food for thought if you're picking the sword.

  • Stun impact has too much of a delay time, I don't really need Leaf Bracer, and I did just fine without Magic Haste/MP Rage. They're not necessary abilities. I always go with the sword for Sliding Dash

  • It feels so good choosing the sword. It feels right.

I'm going with sword anyway.  I know and sure those abilities are very useful.  But I'm one of those players who likes going with extra strength.  Besides (unless you don't count) attacks like sonic blade and strike raid that use MP, the only magic I really use are Cure and Aero.  I like to attack heartless and bosses myself and not finish them off with offensive magic.

You'd be giving up Leaf Bracer (being able to heal through attacks without getting interrupted; mind you, you'd find yourself having to re-do a heal/dying many times more than without this: fact.) for your entire playthrough of the story mode, for one single extra point in strength, which pretty much literally does absolutely nothing past the first world.

All the abilities I listed >>>>> (way, way greater than) 1 str pt.

It's so primitively small you can't even notice the difference.

I will likely choose the sword anyways, mostly because you can get some really useful abilities very early in the game. I know that I might not get the rest until later, but oh well, I still get them eventually.

More useful than Leaf Bracer and Stun Impact?

More useful than Leaf Bracer and Stun Impact?

I played the original Kingdom Hearts without them, I can do it again lol

do you still get strength upgrades if you dont get the sword?

Yeah. You only get +1 str with the sword, so to me, it's next to useless when I can either choose 1 str, or all those OP abilities. I think I'll choose being OP.

I'm more than aware I'd being giving up useful abilities such as that.  Sure it would probably be better to go with the staff or shield first.  But I have little concern for the second half of the game since I tend to level grind to max level before finishing the last world (maybe even before).  I think being at a high level with compensate for my play style.  I like to take risks and have a challenge with bosses.  This will be for the first playthrough anyway.

sword ftw

1 negligible extra pt. in str, while also giving up all these abilities, in turn, dying much more often. ftw!

Whoa, I didn't think of that. ._. I still usually choose the shield now though, since I go with Expert. The defense boost is insanely helpful, and I don't use magic often aside from Curaga and Aeroga.

Once you try Graviga, you be finding yourself spammin' it all day err' day. ;]

It's so insanely useful.

But yeah I like whacking things upside the head with a big key so I usually end up doing that anyways, even if it is much weaker. lol

I've always preferred the sword, even in FM.  Since I'm starting a proud mode play through this weekend, I might just have to try the rod. Don't know what I should sacrifice, though.

Grabbing the shield, tossing the rod.

The reason I choose the sword is because well:

#1 The keyblade is usually used as a sword for canon Sora since I never seen him use magic in cutscenes really.

#2 I don't focus on magic unless healing and Aero.

#3 Like the last person said, it feels right.

Also i usually take out staff.

 - You won't get Stun Impact (amazing ability) until level 51. It's level 6 if you pick Dream Rod.

 - You learn Leaf Bracer at level 69 (by that level you should have already beaten the game...), where if you go Proud mode, you'll be having a rough time without it. 27 with the Rod.

 - No MP Haste (regains MP twice as fast while attacking enemies) until level 45.

 - No MP Rage (regaining MP while hit) until level 63. (having both of these by level 30 with the Dream Rod, you hardly ever have to worry about not having enough MP to heal yourself. Especially by having extra bars of MP)

In my opinion, these are abilities you just CAN'T do without, especially on proud. If you pick the Dream Rod, you get all of these within levels 20-30. It's just not worth it to me for the sword for an insultingly crappy 1% boost in Keyblade damage along with next to useless abilities when compared to these.

Kind of a little tip before anyone picks before knowing the benefits of each choice.

Another protip: I've seen a lot of people say magic is "useless" in KH1. That couldn't be anywhere near the truth. I was 2-3 shotting the End of the World heartless, and taking out a whole half a bar of HP on the last few bosses with Graviga, and they have multiple bars of HP. Fyyyyiiii

Tbh, I don't see a point whatsoever to pick the sword, but that's just me.

Well some of us don't see it that why, and some of us say Magic isnt as useful. You know why?

You're limited with Magic in this game. Alot of us choose Sword because if you use Magic too often, YOU'LL RUN OUT OF MP. While with Attacking, you CAN ALWAYS ATTACK, NO MATTER WHAT. I'd rather save my magic for Curaga and Aeroga.

Sure, its helpful for taking out normal enemies, but the bosses is where it counts, and MOST BOSSES DONT TAKE AS MUCH DAMAGE FROM MAGIC AS THEY DO FROM PHYSICAL ATTACKS. I use offensive magic for normal enemies when i can, to take them down. BUt most of the time, i physically attack, and that works better IMO. Especially with FM, since those combo finishes like Ripple drive and huricane period and extremely useful.

In games where there's no real limit to magic, like BBS, DDD and Re:COM, i use magic alot because it helps. I use magic and attack in equal balance. But when magic is limited to an MP meter like in KH1 and KH2, its more useful to save MP for when you need more defense or to heal. At least, thats how i think of it.

This time around, im choosing Shield. You get the most HP, more item slots, and the defense boost is INSANE and perfect for a Proud mode run of this game. Plus you get abilities like Lucky Lucky and Guard earlier. But for most of my runs where im not trying to 100% the game like i am here, i choose sword and drop Magic. But still, if its really true that its only one Strength point, compared to getting all those abilities, i may Choose Shield and drop Sword in my Proud playthrough. Maybe. IDK yet.

Agreed.^

Still picking sword, but I may pick the staff on another save file. Besides, I normally pick the sword anyways because of my love for swords :D

The sword has advantages too. Like the 1st Combo Plus comes to sword at level 9 while the shield gets it at 42 and staff gets it at 66. Also the sword gives you limits and special melee attacks the fastest, which looks cooler than those spells in my opinion. There's most likely more, but I'll just wait for the game to come out.

Also why do you hate the sword so much and make it look like crap compared to the staff?

Because in my opinion, it's garbage compared. More than half of the time on Proud mode I found that in the middle of a heal, I'll get either interrupted or die because of not having Leaf Bracer. And having those MP abilities almost doubles the amount of times you can heal, while also having Leaf Bracer. And Stun Impact is amazing, so I'd much rather have that my entire playthrough than get it after I beat the game.

Choosing the sword only gives you 1 str point and a couple offensive abilities that aren't even that great compared to the benefits of Leaf Bracer and the rest of the abilities I listed.

I know, I didn't use magic attacks on bosses that often either, unless it DID do massive damage. Some bosses actually do take as much damage, at least with the gravity spells. I remember using Graviga on the Behemoth fight in HB, and it took out a half a bar per use. I didn't spam it repeatedly so I could save for heals, but every once in a while, it helped massively.

You argue that it isn't good for healing, yet MP Rage and MP Haste allow for MUCH more healing, and in my opinion, after endless battles of dying because I was interrupted during a heal, Leaf Bracer is the best ability in the game to me. The offensive abilities aren't really that great for me, compared.

You'll see what I mean after going "Heal! ARG. He..AHH!" over and over and over throughout the game. lol. It's SO annoying to play without it, imo.

Stun Impact is also really, really useful too. Neither Ripple Drive nor Hurricane Period stun multiple enemies at once.

When I was playing Kingdom Hearts way back, I always chose sword then staff. Also a few times I remember I chose sword then shield.

I always liked using magic....

But I liked to be defensive...

Also loved doing extra damage...

The decision will be hard for me when I put the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX in my Playstation 3.

That's understandable, but dream sword is still my favorite.

Yeah, but i dont need MP rage and MP Haste because most of the time i know when to dodge attacks. The only real times i would need abilities like those is when fighting the secret bosses, and when i go up against them, i plan to be at level like 70.

For most of the story bosses, you can just mash attack and heal and you'll win. BUt i see your point though. I may choose Magic for my Normal mode run(to platinum the game) and give up strength to try it out and see which one i like more.

But i have to admit, Gravity is THE BEST SPELL IN THE FUGGIN GAME. When i played the game at a friends house, i would use Gravity on enemies like the Big Fat Heartless, and it decimated their health. And compared to other spells ITS SO OVERPOWERED. Not to mention IT CAME HURT XEMNAS. So i see your point.

You may have changed my mind. If it really just adds only 1 strength to choose sword, ill just Choose Shield and drop Sword on my proud playthrough. I'll keep Magic, so ill get the MP abilities faster. On my normal run, ill probably choose Magic and see how it goes. BUt im definitely choosing Shield for Proud mode, since it looks like the defense will REALLY HELP against the bosses.

I'm gonna get so much hate for this...

I always pick the Dream Rod 'cause I think the Mickey on top is pretty.

Was it changed for 1.5?!?! That's not what it says on every other site I go on (http://www.khwiki.net/Leaf_Bracer#Kingdom_Hearts_Final_Mix), but it's for the original KHFM. I may need to rethink my strategy if so, and this thread would be an utter failure. T_T

Yeah, found it on the PS4trophies website. They have a full guide up with tips for Proud mode and said this was the best way to go as well as choose Dawn so you gain these abilities quickly.
