It happened slowly, but it's happened. Cloud has been replaced as the face of the franchise. The Compilation of FINAL FANTASY VII was supposed to continue past Advent Children Complete, but it didn't. Why? Lightning became the face of the franchise. Lightning was the main character in FINAL FANTASY XIII, and while she wasn't in XIII-2, her sister was and the game only happened because of Lightning. And then in LIGHTNING RETURNS, for the first time ever only one character was playable. This was of course Lightning. And what else has been going on for Lightning? She's in FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn both to fight alongside you but also provide quests to unlock her gear. And what's the chance she's in FINAL FANTASY XV? I'd say quite high considering Square Enix confirmed she could appear in a future FINAL FANTASY game, and the new world in LIGHTNING RETURNS looks a lot like FINAL FANTASY XV's.

How can she have replaced Cloud when a lot of people are getting really tired of Lightning? Plus, not only is she not as popular as Cloud her games are complete crap compared to Final fantasy VII, Crises Core, and Advent Children. Also on a side note Lightning Returns is not the first timeyou play as a single character. You ever played Crises Core, my friend?

Actually, yes it is. The fans are the ones who made Final fantasy popular to begin with. And they sure can make Square go bankrupt if they don't like a FF game. Just look at Crapcom and the things they've been doing lately and how the fans been reacting to them.

I thought XII and X-2 were as hated as the original XIII. Besides, XIII-2 and LR seem to be more well received than the original XIII form what ive seen.

The problem with that is that the reactions to XIII as a whole are so mixed that Square could happily take it upon themselves to name Lightning the new face of the franchise if they wanted to. However, I doubt they'll remove Cloud from his throne until Noctis reigns in.

I think the last bit was Toriyama (I think it was Toriyama) just saying there was a possibility for more Lightning. I don't think there's anything concrete yet, though.

 

And IDK. I still think Cloud's been in more things, but I get what you mean. Still... I think they just got burnt out on FFVII and needed a break from it. I'm sure "Eternal Crisis", will come out eventually.

 

But in all honesty, I think Square needs to stop shoving Lightning in our faces and start showing more of XV or something (and I even like FFXIII and Light). But there's no denying that these games have been very controversial, so if Square wants to recover from last generation, they need to give the people what they want. Which at the moment is no more Lightning.

I'm not arguing about Cloud's place in series history, simply that at the moment he isn't the face of the franchise. There's a massive difference. Cloud is probably the biggest character in Square Enix history but at the moment Square Enix haven't been doing anything with him, at the moment they're doing stuff with Lightning. So at least for the time being Lightning is the face of the franchise.

Lightning has not been in more things. She's been in the three XIII games, Duodecim,  FFXIV, All the Bravest, and Theatrhythym (and possibly other things I'm forgetting).

 

Cloud has been in Before Crisis, Crisis Core, FFVII, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, both Dissidia games, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy Tactics, Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, KHII, Re:Coded, All the Bravest, Theatrhythym, Last Order, Case of Denzel, Ehrgeiz, Itdaki Street Portable, and was a "virus" in Parasite Eve, etc.

 

And I don't think it's fair you won't include all of the Cloud things in your argument, but are including XIII-2, when you didn't "play as that character" in it.

 

And once again, Cloud was in FFIX, so Lightning wasn't the first to be in another main series game.

Cloud wasn't just limited to FF,he made it to Kingdom Hearts,anime OVA of his game,movies,countless amount of merchandises,he was used to showcase the power of the Ps3 in a tech demo,he's a much popular figure even outside of video games

 

Lightning was just in 3 games,and wasn't even playable in the second and wasn't the spotlight of the first.

 

Did Lightning have her own movie?Did Lightning have OVA or as many merchandises as Cloud?
