I heard somewhere that the USA is the only country in the world where college education is not free for students.

If so, that breaks my heart.

 

I hear accounts of people not continuing on with their life goals, wishes, jobs, and even raising their families because of college debt.

And those who can pay it all off in a quick time, they are able to get on with their lives and not waste it trying to pay a ridiculously high debt back.

Yes. There is financial aid available through grants, loans and all that. But other than that, college is something we have to pay for. It's hella expensive too. It's really dumb actually, considering a lot of high schools don't get you completely prepared for college. The American Education System is very flawed.

Their are some programs that help students pay their college tuition, but their's just not enough of them in certain States.

Yeah we have to pay, like others said. It seems like in order to get into a good one you need to start saving from the day you are born. Other stuff (to a lot of stuff) is wonky in the education system as well

Well yeah it's pretty much a pyramid scheme, but it's not impossible to get out of debt if you manage your money, eat ramen every day, don't take out more loans than are absolutely necessary, go to an in-state public school, buy books off of ebay, and live well within your means. Not saying that the educational system is golden, but there are ways around the system.

Yes, our "free country" isn't very free. Never come here, it's not all it's hyped up to be.

Pretty much. Most of the 'good' colleges/universities (i.e, Harvard, Princeton, MIT) are gonna cost yah several hundred thousand a semester. There are cheaper ones (relatively speaking), and there is financial aid, grants, and scholarships as to lower that price--but I don't think there is a single college in the US that is free. Makes me wish I could move elsewhere, where college isn't going to run you a debt that you'll be paying until you're forty-five.

Hyped? Who the heck would be hyped about the USA? It's not free, the powers that be take more than they want to give back, half of it is a dump, their army is SCARY, and when there is a movie released with gay people in it, we give it an R rating.

People praise America like it's the greatest country on earth and it's not. I agree with you 100%.

Yes, nothing is free here in America. Whenever we say something is free, there is always a catch. And as I am planning on going to college soon, I know that you have to pay for college no matter how much of a scholarship you get. Lucky for me that my mother supports me going to college and no matter what she is going to help me find the money to actually do something with my life instead of just wasting it.

 

Plus my mother isn't going to do a credit card or bank loans for college. Somehow she is going to make it where I can go to college and not be in debt.

The problem is the private schools that have crazy high tuition and students feel they have to go to these universities. (Buttherearealsowaystocheatthesystemwinkwinkcoughsuvnisrtjbhi)

USA isn't the only country in the world that pays. In New Zealand we pay fees but they're heavily subsidized by the government. For instance, international students (who aren't funded) will usually pay about $30,000 per year of study while domestic students will pay $7000.

Wow. Your mother is so supportive. I hope everything works out for you in the end! My mother would help, but we're too busy taking care of my little half brother. My grandmother has over half a million from her mother's heritage. However, she doesn't really feel like helping me or my twin brother, because she seems too busy going on cruises to Alaska and Canada for reasons I don't know.

It really depends on how much you apply yourself and who you know. 

 

I live in North Carolina and about an hour away from UNC Chapel Hill and Duke which are both ranked in the Top 20 for medicine in the world. 

Duke costs $60,000 a year; UNC Chapel costs $20,000 (undergrad) 

I could go to either one but....... money

Who has that much money around?  I don't qualify for grants and financial aid (maybe work study) because my dad's income is over $100,000. 

So you have to beat the system. Go to a community college for a semester, year, or two years and there are will be more scholarship opportunities and internships that will pay for your education because they see that your are capable and are a better bet. My best friend got an offer from Apple to pay for housing, a car, guaranteed job, and $125,000 a year (she's 19 btw). Apply for honors college for research opportunities and do a study abroad. 

I plan to go to Community College (for free), transfer to UNC Chapel after a year for undergrad and do Honors College, and go to Duke for med school.

Are you kidding America get hardly any praise at all. We're the first ones pointed at when other countries need an example of everything wrong with the world but when something bad happens those same countries come running to us for manpower or money. Our country has it's flaws but so does every other country in fact there are a lot worse place to living in today's world.

It very much depends - I've been offered nearly a full ride to one private college, and my state university technically costs about $20,000, but there are so many loans, grants, scholarships, etc. that I doubt many people pay it in full. It varies greatly per person. If you do well in school you'll be offered massive scholarships and stuff so that college is cheaper (or for some very lucky folks, free). You can also get sports scholarships. Although I think free college is a good idea, it's not actually so bad here. If you don't have a lot of money you can get special grants/loans/whatever and you can even get the application fee waived so that you don't have to pay while you're in college. You have a lot of debt afterwards, but if college has helped you to get a job, you can eventually pay it off and be in a better place thanks to your education. Many schools are also pretty affordable - if someone is particularly poor community colleges can get you a bachelor's degree in two years. Community colleges are cheaper anyway, but getting a degree in less time than at a traditional college makes it even cheaper. 

I will say the foundation of what america was to stand for was great, but they also went against their own ideals since foundation, with the slaughtering of Native Americans, granite most which I speak in this does not pertain to all americans; however....

 

• the country has an epidemic called depression and greed.
• America's individualistic ideals has created a loss of empathy
• the darker parts that people deem acceptable has infected other nations and began killing their culture
• created a stigma so when people want to live in other countries their reputation is already shot
• some people of the middle class can be thrown out society based on their unwillingness to conform 
• the country has no real foundation of morals or ideals of righteousness that have not been kept by majority. 

 

I could go on, but alas the concept of "America" not so bad, where it stands today, insert your own opinion, it should not have turned this way. 

Our education system sucks here. Your taught to memorize not learn and college is paid for in huge amounts per semester and many colleges make money solely off of loans. Your better off going to college in like Europe or something.

Yes America isn't perfect.  There are tuns of people out there who care about Money and their ideals more than the well being of others.  However, I can think of worse places to live.

I think there is one college in America that offers free education to students; it's called College of the Ozarks. I think the only thing you have to do there is work part-time for the college and you basically have free education. 

I pay with student loans, and since I'm going to be a teacher, I get help with financial aid and I just re-took the ACT to boost my chances for more scholarships. 

You just have to apply yourself to get the money for college here.
