Can people please just stop hating on FFVII so much?

Totally agree, that's why I can't stand when people gather together to hate on a masterpiece like mindless sheep because it's the cool thing to do.

Sadly, that's how "fans" are nowadays.

No, that's just hipsters.  "Final Fantasy VII is the worst game in the series, which is why I'm playing it!  "

Cause, you know.  Irony.

I love FFVI and FFVII but people like us seem to be in the minority. Generally people enjoy one over the other because VII was either their first Final Fantasy (or RPG, period), or the first shift in the franchise's direction that certain peeeople out there don't appreciate. If I remember my gaming history, Final Fantasy and RPGs didn't really get popular in the West until VII came out. Part of its massive popularity is both in part to it being a legitimately good game (to me, though lots of people agree), and because it's something a lot of gamers hadn't seen before.

That being said, you'll probably find a lot of people these days whining about FFVII because, c'mon, it's over a decade old now. It's a classic by game standards, but unlike a lot of classics it hasn't aged well in a lot of ways. Obviously the graphics were primitive, or at least the sprites were -- even when it first came out I thought they looked like Legos. There's also a lot of conventions that were revolutionary for its time, like the angsty protagonist (even though Cloud actually wasn't all that angsty until the Compilation, and that Cecil and Kain from IV before it angsted it up pretty well themselves). It's just that they've seen so much use that in modern day, gamers sort of take them for granted. FFVII hasn't done anything that this generation of gamers probably hadn't seen before. When you show them VII and tell them what an awesome masterpiece this is, chances are they'll give you a funny look.

Of course, the VI vs VII debate still drives me nuts. It's like comparing apples and oranges. They're both delicious fruit and I like them both in their own ways. At the same time, the 90's really are over. FFVII is past its prime, and given its reputation it's pretty much open season. Though, it doesn't explain why they don't do the same to VI, given that it's even older an probably regarded as an even bigger classic. Think trashing FFVII gets you flamed? Try doing the same to VI. You might as well throw yourself into the incinerator.

And, as I've said before and will say again, "overrated" is a meaningless term for me. You might as well call everything that's popular overrated because you'll always find a number of people bitching that so many people enjoy what they dislike.

I agree, they're both fantastic games. FFVII kind of helped me enter the RPG world through Kingdom Hearts though, so that along with its imo better story is why I like it more. I always liked the low poly graphics, I thought they were charming, but I can see why someone wouldn't like them.

I also hate the VI vs. VII debate. It's kind of pointless considering how similar they are to one another in a lot of ways.

I don't know what you wanted to acoplish buy making this but peoples minds don't change cuz you want them too. I love what I want and hate what I want. that's just how it goes

Just like all the games. Simple.

There will always be those kind of people who give shit to one of the gaming history's most cherished staples. Whether it be Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, Sonic, what have you, there will always be a group with animosity towards it. Some may hate FFVII while others love it, same with FFVI. But the same can be said about every game. We can say the same for the KH series as well. My point being the same as yours -- You cannot compare the two as "better vs worse." Yet, people do. Because they can. It's what people do. We compare and contrast things, sometimes in an unintelligent manner. And as cliche as this next bit may sound -- it's what you think that matters. Let's take for example Kingdom Hearts, almost my entire immediate friend group could care less for KH and while FFVII is my personal favorite (for now...looking at you FFXV) I know many who prefer FFVI or another title over it simply because their favorite is "better." Whether it be story, characters, game-play mechanics, music, etc. Though, I won't let myself get frustrated over the fact that they could care less for FFVII despite its majesty because they are simple opinions. As is mine. I smile and nod because though they may think FFVII, FFVI or any game in any franchise or at all period....it's simply their opinion. So let people sh** on FFVII or FFVI or X or 1-15 and every spinoff there is. Because you acknowledge their greatness, that's what matters. Trying to persuade others into also acknowledging some form of media's or arts' beauty when they are simply cemented in their opinions without hearing others' is simply useless. Let them be, and don't let yourself get too frustrated with them. Enjoy the games, regardless of what others think, and hear others' opinions as you'd like them to hear yours

Just a warning

when your complaint is "stop hating this thing I like" you've probably crossed the threshold from fan to the dreaded "fanboy"

Now first off, FFVI has aged much better than FFVII has. Most 2D games have. But that's beside the point, why are people not allowed to think a certain way? I find it funny that people are mocking the types of people who would call them out for liking FF7 when there's so many excuses flying around this topic

Is FF7 important to video game history? Is it a classic? Yes. So? I don't have to like it, or even respect it. As far as I'm concerned FF7 has a great intro and then everything falls apart after that

Oh, and how is Kefka destroying the world not a valid argument? A person cna like or idslike something for whatever arbitrary reason they want. I could say FF5 is the best Final Fantasy because the main villain is blue and blue is my favourite colour. That's no less valid

Tip: If you want to be taken seriously learn to spell.

Your "Just cause" philosophy is rather ignorant my friend.

hahah woah woah woah

you're calling someone ignorant because they think that randomly whining on a forum that a game you like isn't be liked by other people isn't going to change people's opinion?

pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft

don't pull a 'nowadays' like you've been around long enough to make any valid comparison

Is it still okay to say VII sucks if I don't like VI either?

VII has never really been my favorite FF, but I don't dislike it as much as I used to. I mostly had a negative reaction to it because I typically don't like anti-heroes, and so my immediate reaction to Cloud running around Midgar and blowing up power plants kind of rubbed me the wrong way. There are a few other elements of the plot that I wasn't big about either: while I appreciate the attempt to make the plot more about chasing down Sephiroth, it often felt to me like I was running without really accomplishing anything. However, time has given a bit of clarity, and I've found enough things to like about the plot that I don't particularly dislike it anymore (Sephiroth's mommy issues, while much ridiculed, are actually kind of fascinating, especially for a villain).

It isn't necessarily about VI, but most of the people who say this shit is because "Kefka is great and Sephiroth is a momma's boy!"

Okay, so apples and apples or oranges and oranges. Still good fruit.

(Well technically I don't actually like apples or oranges, but then my example breaks down. Give me mangos. Or coffee.)

FFVI is like

hm

it's like coffee that starts out all creamy and sweet but at the end gets all dark

FFVII is like coffee made of three polygons and you can't actually tell it's coffee

Me voicing my opinion on why hating on VII for no other reason than you like VI better isn't me saying someone isn't allowed to voice their opinion.

Kefka destroying the world under different circumstances isn't a valid argument on why you think he is factually better since it was a completely different universe with a completely different story.

Have you played the game? Fully I mean. Because most people (Like you) who follow the crowd and hate VII because it's popular have not played the game even halfway through. I noticed in the script thing you posted that you changed multiple wings into a wing, which is false. The final boss at the end of VII looks strikingly similar to Kefka's final form and has multiple wings. He doesn't have only one wing in VII itself, only titles related to it such as KH and advent children.

I've just been playing video games since the NES (or was it SNES?) era. But people like different things and have different opinions, I don't judge them for what games they like and don't like.

Here's the difference between voicing your opinion, and saying that other people can't have a certain opinion

One of them isn't an opinion. It's a command

"factually" better. If we're dealing in facts here, then none of us can claim any of these games are good. Quality isn't based on facts, it's based on feelings.

Have I played the game? Quite extensively, actually. I attempted a ridiculous 100% run before giving up and just playing the game normally. I know the game well enough to know that Cloud is remarkably out of character in every subsequent iteration, and I also know it well enough to know that the cutscenes look like pixels trying to act out a school play.

So no, I don't hate FFVII because it's popular

Well actually I don't hate FFVII at all, nice assumption there

...wait, are you assuming I made that image? It's been in circulation a long time, I just looked it up

I mean uh

okay

that's nice

but anyways, this isn't a 'nowadays' thing, this is a 'human nature' thing. Fans didn't suddenly become like this 'nowadays' it's just kinda how people are

New hardware. It was one of the first fully 3D games of it's time, and probably the longest fully 3d game of it's time as well. Bashing it for graphics is kind of silly in that regard.

Wait so you're saying that character development among multiple iterations is a flaw? Alrighty then.

If they couldn't make it look good in 3D they should have made in 2D. I'm not giving them bonus points for trying and failing

Character development? I was unaware that Kingdom Hearts was part of the epic FFVII saga

It wasn't failing, it looked quite nice for it's time and I personally think the graphics are still quite unique and charming.

I thought we were talking about the FFVII series though lol I don't remember KH being mentioned.
