Xbox store reveals approximate filesize for Kingdom Hearts III

KHWaterBlock

The Xbox store has updated recently showing off the approximate file size for Kingdom Hearts III on the Xbox One. The digital version of the game will require approximately 35.81gb of free space on the hard drive. The store doesn't mention anything about day one patches being included in this total. When you pre-order the digital version of Kingdom Hearts III on the Xbox Store, you are given a code to receive the Xbox One Keyblade.

Interesting, the way Nomura was going about it he said the game was huge. So I thought it would be like 100 GB but about 30 is nothing really unless you have slow internet.

I think they mean huge in comparsion to the other games. (They were able to fit the all the other games except 2.8 onto one disc)

The file size is surprisingly smaller than expected, but we got to remember that quality > quantity.

Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t agree more! But the more we see the more i get this nagging feeling that we are literally seeing everything. I do hope there are at least a couple of surprise worlds saved for release.

I don't know if this is good news or not. I do think Nomura was over exaggerating when talking about how huge the game was. It will be probably bigger then any other game before it though.  Just I don't think the main story is gonna take 100+ hours that some suggest. Which I'm personally OK with if that's the case.

I think fans were overexaggerating when they said the main story would be 100+ hours. Nomura said the story would be around 40 hours I believe and over 80 for 100%. Cutscenes can potentially be condensed quite a bit in size and 80+ hours for full completion probably also includes all of the mini games. A lot of them seem to be rather simple and likely won't take much space.

To be honest, I don't know where people still take the notion from that the main story will take 100 hours. First of all, that isn't a good idea because the replay value decreases if the main games takes too long in my opinion. Of course they could fit that much content into KH3 with how many characters there are and give more insight on loads of things, but I don't think that was ever a real possibility. I don't see many games which have such a long main story. (And it doesn't count to the time to get distracted by side quests either.)

Another thing is that they have to be compared to other games. We can't compare them to the recent vast open world games since despite being larger, KH is still mainly story-driven and doesn't focus too much on exploration and all those extras which make people sink hundreds of hours into the games. Apart from the mini games and the occasional treasure chest, there likely won't be a plethora of things to do but fight enemies since it's still mostly a hack'n'slay type of game. There's no hunting, no survival, no completely seamless open world, so I think roughly 36GB still translates well to 40 hours of main story.

There are lots of games which have similar or even smaller file sizes despite being rather large in terms of content. Persona 5, Monster Hunter World, the new Dragon Quest, etc. all have smaller file sizes if I recall correctly.

I can't say I don't have any doubts either after all this talk about having difficulties to fit the game onto the disc because it was so large. I do fear story-related content was cut to adjust to that and so they can make more money from DLC. But the first insecurity I had was quickly debunked by seeing how many other games have this kind of file size without losing in quality.

It's not the best idea to compare it to open world games and those which already had considerably large patches though as I've seen some do. It might be smaller than some people imagine but as you said, it will likely still be bigger than any other KH game before.

More than file size or what could be added (which, to be honest, will always be a lot in terms of KH since there are always more side stories and character relationships/character development to explore), it's important that it will still be a complete experience, although it might not be as long-lasting as some people hope it will be and won't be able to address absolutely everything we want to see. In that regard, KH3 will only be able to lose.

But better that than letting it drag on and on with needless extensions or way too many cutscenes in a small amount of time. (Like in KH2 where you sometimes couldn't take 5 steps without being assaulted by a cutscene. Don't get me wrong, I love story and everything, but some were just too much without giving the player some time to actually play the game.)

The smaller file size sometimes has less to do with how long a game is and more with optimization and compression. Not to mention, Persona 5 apparently had a very small download file size even though players can reach to a 100+ playtime in it. Don't know if this is still true or not. I'm in no way worried if it does have small file size.

The claim that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be 40-50 hours long when finished and 80+ hours for post-game content that was made a while ago is actually false as Square Enix didn't know how long the game would be at the time and never stated that it would be this long. If anything, it's a fair estimate on how long it's actually going to be. I think it will at least be somewhat longer than KH 2. With how many characters they've shoved into KH 3, I wouldn't doubt if it's at least around 60 hours long base game. Of course this less of a fact and more of an opinion on my part.

It's less than a problem for me. The only concern this could give to me is the idea of Pre-rendered cutscenes losing quality, but if they actually look good then I don't care that much. If the game is closely in time to that of any other KH game I am sold! I'm one of the guys who looks EVERYTHING the new worlds have to offer so I spend a lot of time exploring and treasure hunting which steals a lot of my time. With the confirmation of hidden mickeys and cameos in the Pixar worlds, plus mini-games, story, leveling up, reading the journal, etc.... I am already happy. For me these games have been carefully crafted since the beginning and this one will be same or better, which is enough for me. I spent hours exploring the Prankster's Paradise Fair and The Cite des Cloches... I even prayed on the beautiful Notre Dame for god's sake!

My point is... no need to worry IMO. File Size can be whatever it needs to be, I trust this game will be great :D

Let's not get ahead of ourselves and and complain about the cutscene handling and load times of a game that has not been released yet!

Nevertheless, 35Gb seems indeed small for a game of this caliber. Even though it might not be based on portions of open world like Final Fantasy XV or Spider-Man, the worlds do seem big and this data has to be in the game somehow.

Keep in mind that we cannot compare it to the size of any other KH games besides 0.2 as the older games use lower polygon models. The data needed to store worlds and character models and animations in HD and beyond quality alone should bump the size to close to 50 GB. I believe FF was 47 at its initial release and KH should be close behind.

Lastly, this is for the xBox version and the PS file might differ.

Either way, I do hope the final size does turn out bigger because the trailers hint at a game larger than that. Anything else might be major concern for quality and length, especially in the cutscene department. I do believe, however, we shouldn't expect to see any more worlds than have been announced.

Please no!  I hope Square Enix can fit all of it on the disk.  I really don't want a repeat of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy fiasco.

You have to figure it depends on how well they optimize the game too. File size can differ drastically from one game to another. I mean Zelda BotW was like 14 gbs and that game was massive.

Smaller than I expected but it works for me! Plus, despite the size Kingdom Hearts 3 is in fact bigger than the previous Kingdom Hearts games. Also, did anyone notice that 35.81 gb is almost the same number as "358/2" Days? Nomura you sly fox! Lol!

Plus, we could have some extra content that we might have to download post game like access to more worlds.

I'm honestly against that. I rather have all the worlds on launch day. I would hate to spend money on some extra content post game worlds.

Nomura already kinda confirmed that as a possibility, but that's down the line. Also, look at games like the Witcher 3, which is around 50gb if I remember. KH3 getting close to 40gb helps to put that in a bit of a better perspective. I also believe that they cut down on size by running cutscenes live in-engine as opposed to loaded in pre-rendered (and in varying quality) animations that made up most cutscenes in KH past.

Persona 5 is a good example of a HUGE game with a lot of content and a beautiful style only needing about 20gb or so of space. 35gb sounds tremendous from that angle.

Anyhow, I don't see this as a contentious point, unless the game launches and is much tinier then we've been led to believe, I'm sure it's still going to be a great experience.

Yeah I know that.
