I am kind of confused so when it comes to each nations standard of beauty is based on what type of make up they wear?
Caity repliedDifferent countries tend to have different standards of beauty's so the work applied to advert campaigns would be different. Like Western countries tend to tan people up to look more exotic, while China prefer paler skin since it symbolizes purity. I like how the UK was one of the one only's to do her eyebrows, scouse eyebrows everywhere.

Caity repliedThey asked people from different countries I'm presuming, there's the same experiment done with a biracial woman and argentina put a freaking galaxy effect over her. While half the people in the UK are as tango as a wotsit the media actually advertises more natural tans, and she still has contouring make up and all on her forehead in it. I think the UK one looks the most "natural make up", also thought Argentina looked lovely for special occasions

Dracozombie repliedI'm not saying the shows themselves are similar, but if anime is just Japanese cartoons and cartoons are... cartoons, it seems arbitrary to separate them. I know there's a world of difference between Attack on Titan and Chowder, but there's also a world of difference between Chowder and, say, Avatar/Korra.
Dracozombie repliedI just call it "Western Animation," too (TV Tropes got me used to it). I specifically chose Avatar as my example because you're right, it's a special case. I really do think the differences are a matter of location and conventions rather than "Anime is this, cartoons are that."
Shulk repliedI personally don't see a point in saying different nations have different styles of entertainment. In the end anime and cartoons are both animation made for entertainment. Cartoon is the wider spectrum, while "American animation" and "Japanese animation" are kind of like a more narrow focus.

Shulk repliedYeah, but there are American cartoons that are action, too. I just don't get why Japanese animation absolutely can't be compared to every other nation's animation. I still usually just use "anime" for Japanese animation and "cartoon" for American animation, but at the end of the day, it's not like anime is some holy relic that can't be placed with American cartoons.

@Shulk True, there are cartoons aimed at the same audiences that watch serious anime, or even more comedic and immature ones. I guess there isn't as much of a line between the two of them, but i still think there is a line regardless. But it probably shouldn't be tooooo segregated.
Dracozombie repliedUnfortunately, that's what a lot of people do. To them, if it's not Disney then it's Simpsons or South Park. It's like saying if it's not Dragon Ball Z or Sailor Moon, it's tentacle porn.
Caity repliedBoth are technically the same, both genres have shows that are aimed at kids, and aimed at adults. Let's get real a lot of people tend to glorify anime to try and make others think it's not for kids and mature, but kinda defeats the points when saying essentially the same negative comments about a genre that's only different in art style. It's like saying Milani and Rimmel aren't both make up brands because one's made in the UK and one's American.
Reyn repliedNot everything i listed was made by Seth McFarlene you know, that was only FG and AD honestly. There are tons of other examples that fit my point, Futurama, Spider-Man(any of the cartoons), Ducktales, Ben 10, etc. :\ Not to mention, it seems like the majority of cartoons in the U.S. these days are geared towards Children. Sure, there are alot of exceptions, but there's a huge majority that mostly play on channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
