haven't been here for a couple months and i'm confused. everything's changed.

I was scared since I couldn't find my old status updates at first but oh good they're still there (don't ask, I'm emotionally attached to the weirdest things).

Anyway, it seems this site is now a lot easier to use on a phone! That's great.

Still feeling a bit sad, though. I associate so many memories with this place and the change seems to make me emotional. Don't mind me, I'm a weirdo. : D

Wow, 3 years and 2 days since I joined KH13. Happy belated anniversary to me!…?

It's somehow really hard to type off my fanfiction... I've only finished 20 pages out of 55 so far. Granted, I was sick again and my head felt all woozy but I wanted to have it done by the end of last week... It doesn't help that I'm unhappy with so many passages and want to rewrite them a second time but then I'm just brooding over it without actually improving anything. My long absence has really made my works worse and my register seems non-existent.

Hey, I'm sure that you'll be able to make things work out! These things take time, just catch your breath, look at what you're doing from different angles, and give it another go! Don't let yourself be discouraged, ya know?

    Merilly replied

Thank you for the encouraging words :D The long break impeded my style quite a bit but I'll probably just need to get into it again. Compared to my other chapters, it's a little worse but I'm at least almost done now. Then I can perhaps change a few things here and there ans adjust some of the more boring syntax issues.

You're welcome! As a fellow writer myself, I always like to encourage others who seek to create new worlds for the reader to immerse themselves in, ya know? Right now I'm actually in the process of writing a story I'm hoping to get published when I'm done with it, ya know?

    Merilly replied

Wah, can you give a summary what it'll be about? :D And good luck with that!

I mainly write for other people and only fanfiction because I'm otherwise too lazy. I'm not a good writer nor do I aspire to be one.

    Sure thing!

Basically, it's about this Sacred Blade that must be forged every forty years to stop a calamity from destroying the world, a darkness that peaks its head every forty years. But to forge said blade, the wielder must be one with strength and valor worthy to face this darkness, and so, when the time to forge the weapon is near, the Weaponsmaster Tournament is held, in which seven candidates are chosen to train under the seven mightiest Weaponsmasters in the world. And out of the seven chosen candidates, one of them will end up wielding the Sacred Blade.

Layle Grisham, a swordsman with dreams of becoming a great Weaponsmaster, decides to enter the tournament, and he wishes to be trained under Gilgamesh, the mightiest of the Weaponsmasters.

I'm currently writing this story and am hoping it will be a hit! :D

Ohhh, and I see! Yeah, I do some fanfiction writing myself! I have a whole KH trilogy posted here on this site, along with a slice of life KH fanfic and a parody story about a Heartless writing his day to day activities in a journal. :3

    Merilly replied

From what I can deduce, it sounds like a good concept. It's not too original to feel foreign to readers and only appeal to a small niche but original enough to stand out among other works.

I don't have something against extreme originality, it's just hard to relate to at times. Cliché concepts are often belittled quite a bit although there's a reason there are common tropes. They are well-liked and not too strange and hard to understand. It's what you make of it that makes the difference.

I also enjoy that it seems to be more set on the actual forging of the blade and not wielding it (though that's of course the part that usually comes after if it's not ceremonial.) That's the original part that makes it different from other fantasy novels. Depending on how it's thought through, fhat can be a very interesting concept to explore.

I think fanfictions are a good method of writing, especially for practice but also for fun. You don't have to create a whole setting and lots of characters on your own if you don't want to. Admittedly, I don't read that much KH fanfiction since I'm so invested in the series. It may sound odd, but the more invested I am, the more reluctant I am to write or read about it. Probably because I don't want to disturb the canon too much? I don't even know why.

Thanks, I'm glad you think so! I appreciate your words of praise! :D

Indeed, one can take well known tropes and add a twist to them, or go off in different creative routes, ya know?

Thank you! Yes, I'm very invested into how this story will play out, and I already have it planned out, and I'm hoping that it'll be interesting enough that people will be drawn to it, ya know?

Haha, and that's completely understandable! Everyone has their own ways of enjoying the media they love! Also, I just realized that I used the phrase "ya know" too much in this reply. XD

    Merilly replied

I think a lot of people are under the impression that everything needs to be highly original to be good and that cliché tropes are to be avoided, but they often forget that there's reason these themes became so well-known in the first place. People like them and can relate to them and even though they're not new, a lot of them will still be well received in the end if they occur. Especially if they fit into the narrative. It will forever not be funny when a character is prompted to remove all weapons and spends the entire evening emptying their pockets. :D Or similar tropes.

That's always a bit hard to predict since I feel like there's a lot of luck involved to become a popular author. Considering what is popular, I don't think it's always good, creative writing, though that's only my opinion. I'm not too fond of Harry Potter, Twilight and the like since their main characters are really dull and Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu. It's not always the story which bothers me but also character portrayal and general writing style. For example, I enjoy reading about emotions. I don't need elaborate descriptions of environments like Jane Austen tends to do. That's what my imagination is for, unless it's vital. These works all are world-driven and don't focus much on actual emotion. My readers actually like my style because I focus a lot on the psychological aspect. But that's always a matter of taste.

I also don't think characters need to evolve drastically unless there's reason to. If a character is balanced from the start, there's no need to force a development through tragic events. That's what I like about Sora for example. He virtually stayed mostly the same. He became a bit more snarky, but he's still the happy-go-lucky type who cares about everyone, but most of all his close friends.

I don't mind xD We all have phrases or words we tend to use more often than others. I've actually gotten used to seeing it from you and immediately connect it to you when I see it, regardless of actually seeing your name. :D

Yeah, when it comes to writing, a perfect balance of creativity and relying on tropes is necessary, since those are foundations that one can build upon, ya know? As long as you know how to create something that'll pop with others while feeling satisfied about what you're writing, that's what matters!

And well, I say that everything regarding character development, ultimately, is up to our own imaginations. Sometimes we have something set in stone, but the thing about stories is that they can take a life of their own, and before we know it, we have this vast universe that we created, and it's amazing that such a process can spark such creativity from oneself! It's one of my favorite things about writing! But yeah, like you said, development should only be applied where it is necessary, and try to feel as natural as possible.

Haha, and yes, funnily enough, that phrase got stuck on me because of Rai. His constant "Ya know" spouting in KHII and Final Fantasy VIII rubbed off on me, it seems. XD

I'm doing good. Right now I am doing a "Road to Kingdom Hearts III" project on my YouTube channel where I lay through all the KH games in The new KH: The Story So Far HD collection that just came out a few days ago.

That's good and nice! I would get the Story So far for the 1.5 and 2.5, but I got 2.8.

Does anyone here watch Voltron: Legendary Defender? I've been binging this show for about a month now, while managing other shows, and good lord, it's a blast! And it's created by the same people responsible for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend Of Korra, so the quality is top notch! I'm on Season 7 now! :D

    AwesomeKHfan replied

Never heard of it before but I love Avatar:)

Oh dude, you are missing out on an amazing show! It's a science fiction series that involves paladins, an ancient warrior mech named Voltron, the Galran empire that has ruled for 10,000 years, different planets and species and overall great story and world building! If you loved Avatar, just think of Voltron as Avatar...in space! xD

Ok if we could just only get trailers like that from now on I'd be fine with that. No more bombs, just light-hearted Disney fun. Nomura plz

    Speaking of trailers... Poor Kirby...

I feel like we aren't  getting anything huge until Jump Festa. Maybe at the Game Awards. I'm a little skeptical  about that one though.

    Merilly replied

If we think about it, it's not that long until December anyway. There are two more events which could have something but the chances are not so great.

The Game Awards is always fairly boring to watch in my opinion and I feel that news appearing there are mainly to keep people interested in watching it. Though that might just be because I dislike award shows.

Yeah, true. I don't mind waiting for one more month anyway. Square Enix has more than given us enough in this past year and with the game coming out soon, I'd be okay if nothing else came out since I'd just be happy that the game actually came out.

I've never really had an interest in award shows, so I've never really watched any but I do know they'll have live performances from bands and stuff to make things a little bit more interesting. I'm sure it's not much different with the Game Awards with exception of news being thrown in there. I've heard the Anime Awards hosted by Crunchyroll are pretty bad since one anime tends to win like over half of the awards it was nominated for each year.

    Merilly replied

True. We've really received a lot, more so than most other games did, and while they could probably show off even more without spoiling too much, it's not like the game didn't get enough promotion. Everything new is just a sweet extra and the game and its sales won't suffer even if it were to reveal nothing exceptionally new until release and just go with trailers such as the new Tangled one. There's no harm in being surprised when the game comes out after all. :D

That would be why I don't watch them either. With games, the competition is fairly strong and people like a lot of different things. It would be hard to predict at times but with Anime, it's often reduced to a few shows that appeal to the masses and not just certain people. Which is a shame because there so many great niche Anime which deserve at least some recognition...

Award shows are nice ways to give back a little to the developers, etc. but I find them boring because knowing that this or that received an award won't make me change my opinion toward the media at hand. It won't make my favorites worse if they don't win nor make me wanna play a game I dislike if it wins. I guess most peole won't be swayed by it either when deciding to purchase something since they don't show a lot of what's nominated.

But to each their own. I think they're catered to the masses and other opinions are often disregarded. In the end, they rarely reflect more profound opinions.

I'd rather watch nicely done press conferences than those types. You can actually see more of the games and compare them directly.

And yeah, you often have the same nominees for a lot of categories which makes it boring... And sometimes you don't understand how something won this because it's so subjective and biased at times.

    DROP THAT TRAILER RIGHT NOW!

  19. ITzDarthLordRevan posted a status update

    WE'RE GETTING A TRAILER?!

Edit: Granted, it seems it was only a minute long but apparently they got new stuff. The trailer has not been released to public yet.

  20. ITzDarthLordRevan posted a status update

The panel started only 16 minutes ago and so far they are doing the same thing they did at TGS except with some new gameplay and they are going through the recap very fast. I feel like we may or may not get a trailer because of this even though they said everyone at the panel would "leave happier."
