Not to imply it was right to ship Pokémon so buggy, but situations like this really do make me count my blessings that, these days, bugs can be fixed quickly and easily via the console’s OS. In my day, you would’ve had to either buy a completely new copy released months later or call support and get them to ship you a new copy after sitting through an hour of voicemail purgatory!
