Actually, I've never thought about it before, but... what are they looking at? The logo?

Hollow Bastion maybe?

I don't think so...

I wanna know now.

I wonder if a Nomura interview contains the answer?

I've always wondered where they are and what they're on.

and wondered why Kingdom Hearts (the heart not the logo) is in the back round

I guess we'll never know...

Nomura. The god.

/endthread...?

I think they're in Halloween Town. That one head in the right bottom corner resembles a gargoyle.

I was always under the impression that they were in Traverse Town on a random roof.

Well since japanese people usually love to make art with deep-meaning behind it, only a japanese artist(most likely the one who made this) or someone skilled in these could tell the real meaning. All we could do is assume they're standing on an ass-random roof in God knows what world staring blankly at a wall or the sky.

Also i never noticed the Heartless sneaking up on Donald from behind

They are looking at the stars.

I think they're in Halloween Town. That one head in the right bottom corner resembles a gargoyle.

Then explain their normal costume in Halloween Town.

I actually think that it's Traverse Town, since it's the only world that all of them went to it at night.

Probably just some random building in a random world on a random night. Only Nomura would know.

World That Never Was?

I'm nearly certain that the only mention this ever got was in a kh2 interview claiming that this was the inspiration for what kingdom hearts would look like in kh2. I wouldn't look too much into it.

It looks like they're either in the Land of the Dragons (the dragons head, the station where the fireworks went off) but that wasn't included til KH2...

It also though looks like Beast' castle (gargoyle in the corner)

I would say it looks like they're on beast' castle roof, with Traverse town in the background....

Multiple worlds together in front of Kingdom hearts, makes as much sense as the whole story.

But we can only assume

The style of the buildings appear to look like Hollow Bastion and the characters staring off in the distance is some kind of symbolism, notice how Riku is staring into the opposite direction. But I'm not sure exactly what they're staring at though. :I

It looks like they finally found Kingdom Hearts, but it turned out to be the logo. Only Riku was smart enough to notice. That's my guess anyway.

I theorize that they're sitting on a pillar, and the place, I think, is either Halloween Town, or Neverland (London).

Once upon a time Nomura smoked a lot of pot and went to sleep. He then began to dream about two boys and a girl, when all of a sudden disney and final fantasy characters appeared. Then blobs of darkness, and dancing bits of nothing came to attack them, then a giant key fell from the sky. Suddenly an old pedo man with no hair split himself in half, and killed everyone. Nomura then woke up and said "I should make a game about this dream" and so he did. That picture was taken from a scene in his dream put on a piece of paper and used as the cover for that game

LOL EPIC EXPLANATION IS EPIC

LOL I was thinking about this the other day. I always thought a few things about it. Everyone except Riku is facing the same way....his back is turned on his friends and facing the Shadows and darkness below him. Sora is at the top center, smack dab in the middle of Kingdom Hearts (or the moon of KH) maybe as a leader figure. Not sure about this one but Kairi is in front of Sora sitting very close to the edge and she's someone very special to Sora whose heart isn't with her at the moment. Hmmm not sure about Donald and Goofy....they're there to look pretty xD But Sora, Kairi, Donald and Goofy are all looking upward to some distant place....maybe a light or trying to see their unknown future. Riku is looking down, away from his friends......that or he realizes his shoelaces are untied xD And the background kinda looks like something you'd see in Hollow Bastion with the castle looking buildings and the gargoyle.

I'm pretty sure that's just a statue, considering it has cracks and all.

I was always under the impression that they were in Traverse Town on a random roof.

Likewise. That's where the journey starts, so it always made sense to me that it would be on the cover.

I think its Traverse Town, but yeah, this picture has always been one big mystery
