Roxas Escaping...*Slight Spoilers if you haven't played Days

Posted

This may have been discussed before but I couldn't find it anywhere

Maybe it's not worth discussing or it's obvious but I'll ask anyway...

When Roxas is escaping the castle, is there a reason why he doesn't use a portal instead of fighting his way through the nobodies <or in my case gliding by> ;) and when you get out, Axel must have portalled out and beaten you outside.

Is he not allowed to cause the organization know or something? Or is it just for a build-up to his fight with Saix?

That...is actually a good question. Perhaps Xemnas can monitor the portals and the locations they surface at from the castle, and that's why he left the way he did.

Well i'm pretty sure it was a build-up fight with Saiix, but you know what? Just apply some imagination and poof! Roxas couldn't use the portals because the OrgXIII keeps an eye on them and would know about his escape plan.

cause he wanted to leave like a badass

Haha, that's pretty much his reasoning in the novel.

I can't even remember seeing Roxas making those Portals on his own. Maybe he just can't make them, 'cause his element is Light?

That's what I thought.  Though then it makes me wonder how Namine can do it, 'cause apart from opening open the dark corridors she seems to be holier than thou.  Just lacking the knowledge of what's wrong and right (until midway through KHCOM)

Roxas seems to be able to wield dark portals just fine, but yeah, I've heard the novel says he essentially wanted to go out with a bang.  There's probably something in place regarding the dark portals, like how they could be monitored, as other people said.  Otherwise, the ability to travel anywhere you want is too easily abused a skill.  If someone found Roxas (or anyone who ran way), what's stopping him from hightailing it through another portal and starting the search over again?  Or dark portaling into Xemnas's secret stash and finding out his answers that way?

Yes he did, before the fight between him and Sora in TWTNW.

I also think that maybe the dark portals are monitored, so that was why Roxas tried to escape the long way.  He was also trying to get to the synthetic Kingdom Hearts that he had helped create to try and destroy it. And going the theory that the dark portals were monitored, that may have been another reason why he didn't use one.

I thought I read somewhere that Roxas can't draw up portals, whenever he went out on missions someone else drew it up for him, of course that doesn't make much sense seeing as in KH2 Roxas draws up a portal to corner Sora at TWTNW. Soo idk...

Wow, that's a really good question.  I'm kind of thinking it was just essential to the plot that he walk straight out the front door instead of using a dark portal,  or, maybe he just didn't think of it.  You know how you realize you did something foolish upon looking back at it, but at the time nothing else occurred to you?  Maybe it was one of those scenarios...

Come to think of it, dark portaling in general seems to be an ill-defined power.  I tend to apply my own headcanon for how the characters can do the things they do, like survive ten story drops and not die, but it's hard to think of something for dark portals since it's difficult to pinpoint their limitations.  Their range/distance can be anywhere from traversing entire worlds to portaling to the other side of the room.  It seems to happen instantaneously, at least for across-the-room range, but we're given no indication of how much time passes--if any--during world hopping.  They also seem to be precise, as portalers seem to wind up wherever they need to be.  It makes me wonder why they even bother walking.  If I had a black cloak and powers over dark portals, why waste the few seconds walking to the kitchen when I can portal my way there and back to my computer in a flash?

The manga, though not canon, also complicates things by showing dark portals as actual portals and not just an instantaneous "whoop we're here and now we're there."  I assume the mechanics of dark portaling haven't been thought out because it wasn't necessary to the plot, but I have to figure that instantenous transportation would be used for a lot more than just world hopping.  The Organization would have no problems discretely portaling into peoples' homes to steal their stuff, like munny, trinkets, precious documents, and even do stuff like murder.  Huh.  I think I figured out how the Organization manages to feed itself.

I just realized something.  I think Roxas left the way he did because everyone would think that if he did leave, he would use a CoDarkness and not walk right out of the castle.  Come to think of it, I don't even think you CAN walk out of that castle.  It didn't work - both Saix and Axel figured it out - but I think Roxas was being smart about it.

This

I'm pretty sure he was only thinking of the whole Xion-Axel not telling him thing. And besides that, I think he was quite angry so he didn't think of anything else ._.

I think he just wanted to be clear about his leaving, literally walking away.

He wanted to feel BA so he went all the way through the castle and killed what got in his way.

....That or he just had a moment of forgetfulness.
