Is the Fina fantasy series really going downhill? From the looks of it it seems that way ever since the creator of the series left Square after he finish FFX. And ever since X the FF games have been getting work as not as magical or memoriable as most of the games do. I mean there are new FF games that are pretty good like Final fantasy Type-0 and FF XIII (in terms of story) but that's about it. XIII-2 to me looks like a complete mess and didn't seem necessary after the ending of FF XIII and it only made fans want FF XIII-3 (A.K.A Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII). As for Versus XIII I can't say anything about it since we know little about that game. But I do hope it saves the FF franchise like people are predicting.

Truthfully, I haven't played any Final Fantasy after X to know for sure (or at least not fully--I've played a bit of XII).  I actually thought the games were going downhill after Final Fantasy VI, but that might just be my personal opinion.  I still love Final Fantasies VII-X, but I just don't think they were as good as some of the original Final Fantasies.

So, to answer your question: I fully believe Final Fantasy isn't as good as it used to be.  Yes, I'm still a huge fan of the franchise, and, yes, I'll still continue to play their games to the end, but I don't believe they have the same quality as they once did.  They're just not the same.

I stopped caring about Final Fantasy not because of the games, but because of it's psycho fanboyish fans

as for going downhill,it's hard to judge since we still only have seen 20% of LRFFXIII built and the beta of A Realm Reborn will start in Feburary 2013( see finalfantasy.net)

As long as I'm enjoying what I'm playing,I don't give a shit about Final Fantasy Fanbase that judge anyone who doesn't like VII and like 13 as a shit person and don't respect different tastes and opinions.

the FF fanbase can go and F%&*^ itself.I know someone will say not all of them like this,BUT WHY I HAPPEN TO MEET THE TROLLISH ONES EVERYWHERE???

well after watching some LRFF13 and FF15 trailers, I believe that both game will be a great game...

I think 12 and thirteen series were pretty good. I'd probably say it isn't going "down hill" but just getting a bit not as good as it was with some.

Short answer: yesLong answer: yeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssss#DragonQuestmasterrace

Final Fantasy XII was my favorite. I think XIII was when it started to lose spark.

I hate 12 with a passion dude

Though I won't say don't like it like other FF nerds

But I just hate 12 for a lot of reasons

I find FF13 great imo. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I never liked FF11 anyway. hopefully FFv13 will b released soon (and as an xbox person, hopefully a port will b released which would b highly unlikely)

"Going downhill" implies that there is a set high point from which to go down. This peak is arbitrary, being for some VI or VII, some as far as X, or maybe no drop at all if you are one of the people who liked XIII.

In many ways, I don't like where the series has gone in general, but there are spikes in the proverbial rictor scale: Vi is up, VII and VIII down, IX up, X down, XII up, XIII down. Whenever Final Fantasy goes back to focusing on characters, plot, and genuine emotion, it is a high. When it reverts to two dimensional anime cliches, hyper-stylization, and non-sequiter aesthetics, it drops.

Should Square decide to once again design a game that focuses on the former's attributes, it will go up again.

I don't know.  The last Final Fantasy I've enjoyed was FFXIII-2 but only for it's battle system and really quick leveling, but that's about it.  X was the last one that I absolutely loved, and the series hasn't been able to recreate that feeling since. I haven't played XI, but I have played XII and while it's not as bad as everyone says it is, it really doesn't hit the mark.

Nah, it just appeals to different people nowadays.

I think it spiked with IV, slowly went down, went up with VIII, up with IX, down with X, and slowly decreased. But it's not bad.

It depends on your personal taste-buds.

I have some friends who believe that it started to go downhill after FF VI. Some believe that it was FF VIII that killed it, some believe it was FF IX and some believe it was FF X.

So on and so forth.

FF XIII-2 was pretty good minus the rage inducing ending. So I'm going to say no. But somebody else will say yes. Long story short, it depends.

IMO I believe that the Final Fantasy series are actually starting to IMPROVE. After Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy XIII was trying to get on the right foot again, FF XIII-2 is a improvement of that and Lightning Returns is just a love letter to those who love those games.

FF XIV rebooted despite being a online game, looks pretty good. FF XV should be fine.

But one person might say " Oh they killed the series with FF VII " while another might say " Oh they killed the series with FF X " blah, blah, blah.

As for FFVIII,my gribe with this game is that the story makes noooooooooooo sense at all

I wouldn't say it's going downhill, it just ain't as popular as it used to be.

My own opinion that it's not as popular because of all the sequels, Im not saying that they suck, but for example: FFXIII was a good game altogether and if the ending would've been happier, it would have not needed a sequel. And when FFXIII-2 was released, I was excited. When I got to play it, I noticed that I didn't like it, too many new characters, time traveling and stuff. A disappointment. And the lightnings saga didn't even end. That is how the saga series got a somewhat negative stamp on my case (Of course there are exeptions too, not all sequels are bad).

I do not want to argue with anyone, this is just my own opinion.

Like the others have said, going "downhill" implies a peak and the peak is completely relative to the individual.  For me, the peak was X-2, but only from a lack of interest or lack of proper consoles to play the later games.  In other words, the only reason my peak exists is because I haven't played any of the others down the line to make a judgment.  It doesn't help that VII and beyond (except maybe IX) are more polarizing than the previous installments, but I legitimately believe part of that is because they came after JRPGs went mainstream and so attracted more people--and statistically, the more people who know about it, the more people who'll hate it.  So, I won't say Final Fantasy is going downhill.  I won't even say it's been going in a different direction because each FF games are stand-alone installments (aside from the ones with sequels of spin-offs), so each one can have its own theme, focus, or setting, which could be more sci-fi or more towards its lower-tech fantasy roots.  The only thing I can say is that Final Fantasy is a franchise where you get to pick and choose which games you like, and there are a lot of games to pick from.

I really agree here. After X, I think the series went so downhill. When the company was renamed from Squaresoft it marked the end of an era I believe. Even KH2 didn't have the magic KH1 had when made by Squaresoft. I don't think a final fantasy game has been made in the last ten years that can stand up to the likes of 7, 8, 10 etc. However I think Versus XIII looks super promising. Perhaps it can restore the series to it's former glory. I do think that 13 and it's sequel are abominations... the only people that will like them are newcomers to the series, who have not experienced the tastiest slices of the pie.

Well I'm an old fan and I liked them,is that a problem in the final fantasy community who'll punish any dude liking XIII

7 is good but WAY OVERRATED

8 Makes 0 sense

12 was balls I hate it

9 was amazing

In general

The entire FF franchise is just overrated beyond belief and it's psycho fans treat it like a religion that if ONE game was different from the others and that dude who liked the game they forbid they consider him dead for liking it

F^%k Final Fantasy

I think it went down hill after FFIX.

X was a train wreck. At first it was good, but it became too predictable

VII is great but I would not call it the best: aka overrated

XIII, imo is better than X.

When squaresoft became square enix, that is when things changed.

I don't know why people say FF VII is "overrated" just because it's the most popular FF game. I mean really, that's about the only reason why people say the game is overrated. Because they just can't stand all the fanboys praising it and talking about how great it is. As for FF VIII, I've heard mixed things about that game. Some say it's great, other say it's boring, stupid, or just plain pointless, I don't know much about the game but that's what i've been hearing from FF fans. FF9 I have no idea what to think of that game since I never played it. But I hear it's good. And as for FFX. even though it's linear I still find it better than FF XIII in many ways. Like how you can actually go back and level grind unlike XIII, and th fact that you can do mini games and how you can actually think of a strategy instead of relying on auto-battle all the time 9 (Yeah i hate FF XIII a lot)

I definitely agree with you on the fanboys. Three are a lot of fanboys who will attack you just for liking a different game and having a different opinion from theirs. it's really stupid.

"Overrated" has lost all meaning to me because now it's just a term annoyed people use to stave off the hyper fans who will murder you for daring to dislike what they like.  It's an attack on the fanbase instead of a meaningful critique of the work itself  Literally, any entertainment media that existed, exists, or will ever exist will have people citing opinions across the whole spectrum of suckiness or awesomeness.  Popular ones like FFVII just attract numerous and louder opinions because so many people know about them, so statistically, you'll get varied opinions.  It's best to play the game yourself with no biases, form your own opinion, and ally yourself with the people who share it--just be warned that there will always, always be opposition to it somewhere, and with a franchise like FF, it'll be a lot.

I thought Final Fantasy XII was a great game. :I

I don't say that because VII is popular,I've played it and that's my opinion about it.It's not as great as everyone making it to be.

If you hate XIII go ahead I have no problem as long as you don't kill me for liking it and I won't force you to like it.

As for the fanboys issue, this is what made me run away from the franchise not because of bad games. No fanbase has disrespected me and ridiculed me as much as the psycho FF fanbase.Even the Sonic fanbase(Yeah the Sonic fanbase) is much much much much better than this P.O.S fanbase.

Plus, for those of you who don't know

Square Enix is not just a name change

Squaresoft were near going bankrupt because of the horrendous movie FF the spirit within which they've spent a huge sum of their money on it's production

And Enix (Developers of Dragon Quest) offered to fuse with the Company and that's how they became Square Enix

not because they wanted to change the name

I've only played X, VII and XII

Well, I guess, I cant really say yet .-.
