Disney Concerned About Violence In Their games

Posted

Bob Iger, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, has announced that the company will take a closer look at violence in their video games following the Newtown school shooting. Iger says that the team at Disney will take a good look at everything they’ve got that could be considered near the line or over the line with regards to violence. He conceded that Disney titles very, very, rarely feature violence, but he still wants to make sure that they’re asking themselves the right questions in terms of that standard.

“[We will} take stock in everything we’ve got that can be considered near the line or over the line”

“Fortunately at Disney there’s very little [violent content], but I still want to make sure we’re asking ourselves the right questions in terms of that standard, and also [ensure] we’re willing to be a part of a dialogue in today’s world that I think is pretty necessary in terms of what our role is and what our role should be.”

This is probably a good idea honestly. I know a lot of parents when they buy a child's first video game, they buy Disney, because of its reputation. There are kids who start playing very, very young, like at the age of 3 or so. Since they're probably going to play Disney, this is a good measure. Little kids don't want to see violence anyway. For the older of us, it's probably not going to make too big of a change anyway.

And then, the keyblade replaced some stuff animals.

I didn't think Disney made games with violence in them.

HAHA Coming from the company who bought star wars... Kinda ironic they asked that for their company, But again Disney should be a little concerned especially since a lot of young ones may play their games and such

Yes, i think a giant key is very inappropriate.

Honestly, it sounds more like a way to gain attention, and make people think they are making their best job.

There's almost nothing violent, like he said himself.

Just as long as they don't mess with KH, 'cause there's nothing in that that would be seen as 'violent' unless they're worried about kids going around throwing keys at people.

Disney + Star Wars - Violence = ???

Make Dart Vader to Sora or Riku's father.

They have Marvel as well, and Marvel can get pretty violent xD

I agree with this entirely. Disney barely makes any games that become violent to the younger audience. So this is a prett good idea on Disney's part as far as moderating their games and making sure there isn't anything too appropriate.

Same here.

So true lol.

I think the gesture is more symbolic than anything.  I'll be surprised if they actually find something they need to change.

Ughhhhhh -_- Once again Video Games DO NOT cause violence >:L geeze.

I'm fine with Disney checking as long as they don't interfere with KH at all.

They're concerned about violence? Their games barely push it as it is. I mean, we're already using giant keys as weapons instead of guns and swords, what's next, the Pillowblade?

CHAINSAWS!!!

(the original keyblade)

I would actually love to see Disney putting some time on their games' quality instead of releasing crappy movie licensed games with no trying at all.

Indeed. Everyone knows that video games are the spawn of everything evil in the earth and nothing bad happened before they were made.

But yeah, wow. Didn't even think their games had violence.

They better not tamper with stabbing one's self with a keyblade.

This is hilarious, considering how most of their games are based on their movies and the movies themselves started by retelling the Grimm fairy tales which always had the villains die gruesome deaths. Even though they toned them down and the deaths weren't actually shown on screen most of the time, they where still pretty violent. Getting crushed by falling rocks, impaled by magic weapons, falling off the roof of a castle ect. None of that even happens anymore yet they're still concerned about violence in their games. I think they're fine as is. You know what my first game was? Adventure Island. You know how old I was when I started playing. 5. You know how many people I've killed? ZERO. Granted it was the 8 bit era so the graphics sucked and I really couldn't see Master Higgins' weapons but it was still as "violent" as any Disney game.

I'm glad that Disney is taking the initiative and closely inspecting their games for "too much" violence, but, honestly, their games have very little violence as it is; I think Kingdom Hearts is the worst, and even that's benign.   It's other companies with violent games for kids that I worry about...

Good for them. Even though their games aren't that violent (KH3 might be rated T for teen the way I see it), it's good that they're taking it into consideration.
