Why Does Everyone Hate English VA?

Posted

I mean what's with all the hate with English VA in a game/anime? I mean sure, some English voice actors don't always fit the character of said game/anime and doesn't always carry any emotion in their voices but there are English voices that are far better than Japanese voices. Like Dragon ball Z for example, the English version is much better in English than it is in Japanese. Another example of games/anime that's better in English is Resident Evil series, Metal Gear Solid series, Kingdom Hearts II, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Fire Emblem: Awakening.

I just don't understand all the hate the English VA gets when it's the fans who demand English voices in the first place. I mean every time there's a Japanese version of a game/anime people want an English version WITH English VA then when that happens people suddenly hate it after whining about an English version. then they want to have Japanese audio in that said game/anime after wanting to hear all the voices in English. I mean what's the whole point of having English voices if you're just going to ask for Japanese audio later on just because the voices don't fit the characters.

It's because they're all weeaboo's.fuqinghateweeaboo's.

Because 1) more English dubs than not tend to be mediocre to just plain laughable, or 2) the weeaboos can't stand their precious Japanese being sullied by silly things like translation.

I never understood that. I'm fine with all English VAs. I just want the anime/game dubbed. That's all. People out there are just too enthusiastic about the anime. If they like Jap VA better, then just listen to it in Japanese. I got no problem with that.

weeaboosThat's seriously the only reason, unless an English VA job is seriously terrible.

I don't it depends on each anime/game I personally enjoy NEEDLESS's English VA better as well as Sephiroth's EVA

Some dubs are better, some subs are better. But purists hate dubs, and they're all like "MANG FACK ENGLESH DUB"

And that's what kinda bigs me. Why does weaboss always gotta brag about Japanese VA being better just becasue they like the Japanese culture? I mean there HAVE been English VA that has done a better job than Japanese VA.

Same here, it usually depends on the anime. I mean i guess i am a weaboo too since I like Japanese culture but i don't always favor it for every game/anime.

The root of hating on anime dubs came from the horrendous quality of 80s to early 2000s animes, when they were censored and/or changed altogether so it could be aired for young children.  As for where the hating comes from today, it honestly depends what version you watch first for most people (for games I've heard minimal complaints on those dubs), for instance the funimation DBZ dub, while it's quality is pretty wretched, is the only way I watch my Dragon ball animes, whereas with Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist I can't watch the english dubs for either since they don't sound right to me

The only anime I've seen that has terrible ENG VA is Fairy Tail and Deadman Wonderland

I enjoy most English voice acting.

like you said some English VA can be pretty good like Dragonball Z's VAs or Leonard Nimoy for Master Xehanort. the only problem i ever have with English VAs are that sometimes there are japanese words or made up words in the anime and when they are dubbed the words have a localized pronunciation that doesnt sound right. People may also listen to the japanese voices in games/anime wish to hear it in english, but then they are disappointed  because they compare the english voices to the japanese voices and think that the english ones don't capture the character the same way, kinda like how i don't like Street Fighter English VAs.

I don't hate the voice acting. I just like some (Christopher Lee, Leonard Nimoy) more than others.

Well one of the things for me is probably the quality of the dubs compared to the original. Most of the time now our anime and games get treated properly and have professional treatment.

This. For the most part when anime was brought over to the states it would often undergo many changes. Like for example Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and anything done by 4Kids. for a long time we've had the mindset that animated = children's content (which is not the case at all) xD.

As well as most animation being aimed towards young boys (they had transformers and other things that usually have some thought to them... conflicts, clear characters) And how barely anything was really aimed at girls (they had the bad, old MLP that didn't really lacked any plotpoints)

Thus Cardcaptor Sakura would get torn apart, rearranged, re-written, and have any romantic scenes between characters cut out. - basically becoming a shonen

And removal of any present Japanese culture seemed to have happened a lot (removed kana and/or changed text/ script, any reference to Japan gets obscured)

And that's what kinda bigs me. Why does weaboss always gotta brag about Japanese VA being better just becasue they like the Japanese culture? I mean there HAVE been English VA that has done a better job than Japanese VA.

The whole better than the original concept is kind of... weird.  I don't really believe that in most cases because unless the director outright states they dislike their VA's job with the character it means that the Japanese actor was meeting what the creator of that anime overall liked for their show... though I guess as a personal opinion that's an okay statement to make.

ANYWAY done with stupid opinions/statements of mine xD.

As of now I don't really know anyone who would request a dub, then hate it with a passion. I know they can get bad reception, but maybe because of more factors?

Though no bad dubs come to mind as of now (from any time after 4Kids shut down)

There is bad Japanese voice acting and there is bad English voice acting

but seriously, at least I feel like there is usually less emotion in some English voice acting (aqua, terra, ven) and in anime it feels like same dudes are used for every single anime that makes it repetitive to listen voice acting. Okay there are some overused Japanese voice actors as well.

I agree with your point about the same people in VA. It seems like that Nolan North is the voice of every video game character now (he plays Drake from Uncharted for reference.)

I wish that within the next 10 years or so we can get a crop of new VA's to kinda diversify the voices and make it a little less repetitive.

I enjoy both, but it depends on the type of game/anime.

OMG GOD I KNEW IT!!!!! Because I was watching fairy tail on this one website and the ENG VA was GREAT... But than I started watching it on funimation ... Something was off.. Very off!!

For anime: Because of 4kids

Except the first season of pokemon.

Because they don't really put enough emotions.

But there are great english VAs I love out there tho. You know like Kirk Thornton /shotshotshot

Weeaboos suck.

Well tbh sometimes english is better like this when I think english is the best:

But other times japanese is better in VA  like the endding here .... and english lacks emotion

The only thing I care about is the fact that Kairi is voiced by Hayden Panettiere. 'Nuff said...
